The Basics

Hard Drive: Large and in charge, the 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 20,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2400 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) is good start for power users, and it offers excellent 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add a maximum of 4 GB to handle immersive 3D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL dual-layer discs, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. For Students.......2006-07-13

What at first glance looks to be a very feature filled and powerful multimedia laptop, turns out to be just an average laptop. Toshiba is known for making not so great mainstream laptops, at least compared to its Qosimo series, which features a strong design, subwoofers on its speakers, and the latest gaming graphics.

PROS:
- Core Duo 1.86GHz - Although 2.06GHz would've been nice to see, this is actually a good deal to see the T2400 instead of the T2300 (1.66GHz). It is also a lot more powerful than the Core Solo and Pentium M (M45) versions of this laptop.
- 1GB of RAM - Very sufficent, althought 2GB would have been nice since there is a GMA950 in here (shared RAM).
- 120GB Hard Drive - Quite large, big plus
- Bright/vivid screen - 1280x800 is a nice resolution, seems to be a sweet spot for 15.4" notebooks. Anything higher is really rare, but very welcomed!
- Fingerprint Scanner - Personally, I find it a gimmick, but it could be a plus to others
- Lots of ports and connections - 4USB is enough for me, and it has FireWire
- Wi-Fi
- Dual Layer DVD Burner - Actually encodes pretty quickly with the 1.83GHz, at least compared to some of the other laptops I've toyed around with.
- Card Reader
- Media Center XP - Better than Home, not as good as Pro, but at least better than Home
- Average Weight
- Didn't get TOO hot like some other notebooks do
- Sound is pretty good, especially with headphones!

CONS:
- GRAPHICS MEDIA ACCELERATOR! - How many laptops have to suffer the 3-range fate when they have the potential to be 4-range? In the product description don't be fooled. It says Vista compatible. This is an embellishment. Vista will have multiple versions, this computer is not set up to be able to handle the Premium version (the one you want) because of its integrated graphics. Also, this is not a gaming machine in any shape or form.
- Design - I think it's a very lack luster design. It does have some media controls, but it doesn't negate the fact that the two tone look makes it look very dated. Lately, sleek black, or a metal looking finish seem to be what's the most appealing.
- No BlueTooth - Similar computers in this price range and class have BlueTooth, this does not.
- Battery - I didn't get the promised 3-3.5 hours. With Wi-Fi on, doing multiple tasks, listening to music, going on MySpace, watching a movie clips, productivity tasks (spreadsheet), and installing a few everday programs, the battery life was at 2.5 hours exactly. With Wi-Fi off, doing mostly the same things, I got 3.1 hours (187 minutes). Normally, I would put this in the pros as an advantage, but considering it's running on a Graphic Media Accelerator, that is pretty lame. PCI Cards usually reduce battery life, this doesn't have one.
- No built-in camera - Although kind of a gimmick to have one, it is a selling point for those that have out of state or out of country relatives they chat with. Almost all the other notebooks in its price range have this option.

BOTTOM LINE: Another laptop dubbed for students. As a home or personal computer that has multiple uses doing any type of professional work, this laptop fall short, but for a laptop to get you through 4 years of college, it will do just fine.
