Amazon.com Product Description
Weighing just over 4 pounds, the ultra-portable Toshiba Satellite U205-S5002 notebook PC packs in an extraordinary amount of power and productivity into its elegant, compact package. The 12.1-inch widescreen display offers TruBrite technology for optimal image clarity and a 1280 x 800 resolution for extra desktop working space and a widescreen aspect ratio for watching letterboxed DVDs. And you can use this laptop as a media center without turning on the system, thanks to Toshiba's unique Express Media Player, which provides control buttons for accessing CD and DVD playback.
It's powered by Intel's new, groundbreaking processor--the powerful Core Duo T2300E--which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance and a more efficient power consumption. The dual execution core T2300E has a 1.60 GHz processor speed, lightning quick 667 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache. Other features include a large 100 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), tri-mode 802.11a/b/g wireless connectivity, an ultra-fast 10/100 Ethernet port, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with up to 128 MB of shared video RAM, 5-in-1 memory card reader, Windows XP Professional operating system, and a long-lasting battery life of up to 5 hours.
<b>The Basics</b>
<ul>
Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is above average in size for notebook PCs, and it's befitting of such an entertainment-centric PC. It offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a good-sized digital audio library.
Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2300E processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 1.67 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3D and 2D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.
Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) is good start for power users, and it offers excellent 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add a maximum of 4 GB to handle immersive 3D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 4x DVD+RW, 2x DVD-RW, 3x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
With Toshiba's unique Express Media Player, you can won't have to wait for Windows to boot up before you can start a DVD movie or CD. Just a simple press of the button bypasses the system and starts your media playing.
Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 84-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous). </ul> <b>Screen, Graphics and Sound</b>
This Toshiba Satellite U205 has a 12.1-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks as well as a built-in microphone--handy for VoIP communication on the road.
<b>Connectivity and Expansion Slots</b>
This laptop has an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN, which is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You get a fairly basic offering of connectivity options: <ul>
3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
1 VGA monitor port
1 S-Video out
1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card) </ul> It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
<b>Preloaded System and Software</b>
This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee AntiVirus, InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, and Sonic Solutions RecordNow.
<b>Dimensions and Weight</b>
This notebook measures 11.8 x 8.9 x 1.4 inches and weighs 4.1 pounds.
<b>Power</b>
It's powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery (4700 mAh), which has a battery life of up to 5 hours (depending on usage). It has a recharge time of approximately 3 hours.

This package contains the U205-S5002 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best.......2007-01-17
I never owned a desktop in my life. Since 2000, when I purchased my first Toshiba, which still runs, I went through two Panasonics (over $2000 each), two Dells and I feel that this one is simply the best performer and the best value for the money. I also looked at the newest Panasonic Y5 as well as W5, which are more than twice more expensive and both of them are noisier and less impressive, albeit for the weight. I would rate Toshibas at the top, Panasonic in the middle and Dell somewhere below freezing.
A good choice for an ultraportable..........2006-11-27
So far this seems like a great "lil" laptop.
I was researching another ultraportable laptop, the Averatec 2370, when I first learned about this Toshiba. The reviewers always seemed to refer to this Toshiba S5002 as a leap up from the Averatec. As in " the Averatec is a fine/good etc ultraportable, but if you can spend the extra money you might want to look at the Toshiba S5002".
Well, I didnt want to spend the extra money, so I went to the store "Staples" to purchase the Averatec. However, this Toshiba was on display & it was on sale for the same price as the Averatec. It was the last one so I snatched it.
The reason Im explaining this is for two reasons.
First, it was a little more expensive than I wanted to or would have paid for an ultraportable with an intergrated system. But I wanted a small laptop for the road. I paid $3K for my Dell XPS with all the trimming but I found its to big & heavy to drag around everywhere I go.
Second, apparently the Toshiba S5002 is discontinued. I dont know if thats a Staples or a Toshiba thing. I just think that should be considered...
You should also know this Toshiba dosent come with a Stand Alone Windows CD. It has a "Restore" CD with "XP PRO Media Center" along with all the drivers & the trashware they want you to purchase. Not having a full version copy of Windows used to be a big deal to me, but not so much these days. If you want to do a clean install with a licensed copy of Windows then you can just download the updated drivers from Toshiba, wipe the drive & have at it. I may do this myself, but for now Ill leave it the way it came.
Ive only had this Toshiba for a day or so & have only had time to delete the trashware, install my own antivirus & make backup copies of the "Restore CD" & a recovery disk. But in that time it has run smoothly & quietly.
The LCD is very sharp & the sound is typical for small laptop speakers. The keyboard is not too much smaller than my other laptops & the USB, phone jacks etc are all placed along both sides instead of to the rear of the unit & there is an actual latch to lock down the top as opposed to the Averatec which just uses tension to hold the top down.
Im pleased with this Toshiba so far. Its slick, well designed & has everything I need for computing on the road. The 1GB of memory with the ability to upgrade is a big plus for me along with the memory card reading functions.
One last thing. I went to Toshiba's website & from what I could tell it seems very user friendly.
I havent commented on the more technical aspects such as the processor as thats something everyone needs to research for themselves. But as far as the design & the funtion of the unit, Im very pleased. So far...
I only gave it four stars due to only having it for such a short time.
Great Little Laptop.......2006-10-04
This is the second Toshiba Laptop I've owned, the first one was a big bulky but bulletproof Toshiba Satellite A25-S207. The thing I like about toshibas is the fact that they come with a boot up disk that can absolutely wipe your computer clean. I owned my first toshiba for 2 years before programs and junk had built up and the computer was running sluggish, so I backed up my files on an external hard drive and wiped the system clean. Followed by reinstalling my most important documents and having literally a brand new system. This computer has been in my posession for 3 months and it's worked flawlessly.
I don't pretend to know all the fine details of computing technology. I use this computer to write papers, play download and upload music, watch DVDs or burn them on the go, and surf the internet. I do NOT game on this and I don't recommend it. Although the computer is strong I doubt it could handle the latest computer graphics. It is not meant to do anything a desktop replacement can do nor is it meant to be a gaming notebook. This is for people on the go. Any College student would LOVE this! it's fast, light, quiet and the screen is flawlessly beautiful.
The software preinstalled on this computer can help anybody figure out whats going on with wi fi connections or other diagnostic type problems. Overall I gave it a 5 because it does everything I ask of it. Toshiba is a good solid brand, you won't regret buying this. I made the mistake of sacraficing reliability for portability by getting a Dell 700m which only lasted me about 8 months before the motherboard fried. This computer will not fry on you. Toshibas are great, my 2 year old Satellite was just too old I'm sure it still works to this day, I sold it. anyways get this compter for 1000 and you won't be disappointed. Trust me
Cool features and configuration for the price but so-so performance.......2006-08-30
This is best laptop you can get with such a great configuration and so many features in a small package, but I was expecting it to perform much better with Centrino Duo as my last laptop with Centrino performed the same. Though I am not complaining.
## Pros
- Light weight
- Awesome screen and clarity
- Huge hard drive (for a small laptop)
- Microsoft OneNote (once you use it it will really become your One Note)
- Express Media player (plays DVD and CD without boot-up)
- Touch and Launch TouhcPad (Side bars and corners of the touchpad can be used to scroll and launch apps)
## Cons
Average performance (may be good for others)
Slightly longer boot-up time (because of all the extra features that are launched but you can always turn them off)
So-So speakers
Good product - has several cool features.......2006-07-25
Awesome notebook - install was really easy. Finger print reader is excellent - especially the additional functionality it offers. (Passowrd logins, launching applications using different fingerprints ... yes, you can actually give Outlook the middle finger !! No pun intended.)
Apart from the battery life, which is only about 3 hrs - (fine by me); everything else works to spec.
The best feature, which is somewhat hidden, is a dual display feature of the graphics card in the system - which means, if you connect an external monitor, you can use use the laptop display combined with the external display as an extended desktop.
Screen is clear and images are really nice, haven't used the Ilink port so far. Also, setting up the Bluetooth has been a pain, but, it's more a function of technical ability than smooth sailing.
Laptop comes preinstalled with a bunch of productivity software and additional tools - so, if you're technically inclined, you can make this purrrrr !! For the technically challenged, be prepared to spend some time reading the manual ...
Oh.. and, not to mention - the DVD Player function - where you can play DVD's and CD without actually powering up Windows (direct hardware buttons) is just icing on the cake.
Would recommend it to anyone - struggled with Averatec 1020 before finally deciding to spend the extra money to buy a U205. No regrets whatsoever!!
