Amazon.com Product Description

Stay productive while you're on the go from office to airport to client meeting (and back again) with the Toshiba Satellite M105-S3064 laptop PC--packing today's leading-edge mobile technology into a nicely light and ergonomic design that's easily portable. You'll also stay confident knowing your data is protected by an integrated fingerprint reader. It's powered by Intel's new, groundbreaking processor--the powerful Core Duo T2300E--which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance and a more efficient power consumption. The dual execution core T2300E has a 1.60 GHz processor speed, lightning quick 667 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache.

This multimedia powerhouse is loaded with the Windows XP Media Center operating system, which enables you to save TV programming and save shows to the hard drive or burn to DVD via the dual-layer, multi-format DVD burner. It also includes built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers that produce pristine virtual surround sound. The 14.1-inch widescreen display offers TruBrite technology for optimal image clarity and a 1280 x 800 resolution for extra desktop working space and a widescreen aspect ratio for watching letterboxed DVDs. Other features include a large 120 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), tri-mode 802.11a/b/g wireless connectivity, an ultra-fast 10/100/1000 Ethernet port, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with up to 128 MB of shared video RAM, 5-in-1 memory card reader, and a long-lasting battery life of up to 4 hours.

<b>The Basics</b>
<ul>

  • Hard Drive: Large and in charge, the 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 20,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2300E processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 1.67 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3-D and 2-D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.

  • Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) is good start for power users, and it offers excellent 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add a maximum of 4 GB to handle immersive 3D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 4x for both DVD+RW/-RW, 8x for both DVD+R/-R, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

With Toshiba's unique Express Media Player, you can won't have to wait for Windows to boot up before you can start a DVD movie or CD. Just a simple press of the button bypasses the system and starts your media playing.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous). </ul> <b>Screen, Graphics and Sound</b>
This Toshiba Satellite A105 has a 14.1-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks as well as a built-in microphone--handy for VoIP communication on the road.

    <b>Connectivity and Expansion Slots</b>
This laptop has an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN, which is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You get a fairly basic offering of connectivity options: <ul>

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card) </ul> It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    <b>Preloaded System and Software</b>
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television with the included remote and record and pause programs (much like a DVR--or digital video recorder--such as Tivo or ReplayTV). It's compatible with cable, digital cable, satellite TV and antenna inputs, and it includes an FM tuner. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee AntiVirus, InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, and Sonic Solutions RecordNow.

    <b>Dimensions and Weight</b>
    This notebook measures 13.5 x 9.55 x 1.5 (WxDxH) and weighs 8.5 pounds.

    <b>Power</b>
It's powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery (4000 mAh), which has a battery life of up to 4 hours (depending on usage). It has a recharge time of 3 to 3.5 hours.

    <b>What's in the Box</b>
This package contains the M105-S3064 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Great laptop; Great price!.......2007-01-15

For the price paid, this machine really does the job. Fast, good features & productivity, great widescreen display. Outstanding wireless connectivity. Only trouble I had was the fingerprint digital recognition system, since it had an installation problem (laptop doesn't recognize the digital device). Easy burning of cd's and dvd's. I think the cd/dvd feature where you can play music/movies without having to turn on the computer is one of the most enjoyable features of this laptop. Perhaps the only drawback is that it doesn't come with Microsoft's Office. If you invest in this laptop for a 2-3 year productivity period, you're getting your money's worth; for sure the laptop will last longer, assuming you treat it well. Buy it!

    4 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied.......2007-01-11

4 out of 5 stars The best Computer for schools.......2007-01-10

4 out of 5 stars Its worth for money.......2006-12-20

I have looked so many options before I purchase my Toshiba Laptop M105-S3064. I looked for HP, DELL, Fujitsu etc. But finally I decided to go with only this model of Toshiba due to following reasons:
*Processor: Its nothing special but yes its has 1.6Ghz Core Duo from Intel.
*Its very ligth in weight, very thin, wide screen.
*Fast in response as it has 1GB of RAM and 120Gb of HDD
*Secured data and laptop: Its has Finger print scanner which secure your data perfectly, nobody can hack your data until you specify dual mode (with password option), also you can quickly log into your machine by just swiping you configured finger.
*High Spped wireless: it can handle all protocols for wireless till now, 802.11a which can give you upto 108 mpbs of speed. it suports b and g too.
*Screen: Very sharp and good looking screen, becuase its a 14.1 screen, its look really wide and view angle is also enough from diffrent angales.
*It has Card reader for Memory Stick, MMC/SD etc. this is 4-1 reader, I think which is enough.
*Enough ports: Has 4 USB high speed ports, 1 S-Video, 1 Firewire

5 out of 5 stars No Problems Here. Loving It!.......2006-11-04

I'm not sure what caused the previous reviewer to experience problems out of the box, but I'd recommend returning it for a different machine.

Mine was a breeze setting up out of the box once I realized there's an On|Off switch for wireless access. And, while it does come with a good bit of bloatware, it was all easily removable. There are a few other pre-installed programs (like Yahoo! Music Engine) I'm going to try out for a few days before deciding whether to ditch them or not, but still far less crud than has been shipped with my previous computers.

The keyboard has a nice feel to it. I've always preferred a laptop's keyboard since I have small hands, so I haven't had any trouble adjusting to this one. The key-click sound is rather nice, too: not as loud as a regular PC keyboard, yet loud enough to let you know your strokes are working. In fact, I spent 3 hours writing yesterday evening and didn't notice any additional errors in my typing.

I'm not a fan of touchpads, though, so I added a USB Wireless mouse. This machine ships with updated drivers, so it instantly recognized the mouse which meant I was off and clicking in no time.

Unlike my old Dell laptop, this one allows me to turn off the touchpad when using a mouse, and that makes me very happy. (I hate it when my thumb accidentally launches a program while I'm in the middle of something.) Another neat feature about the touchpad: you can set certain corners of it to launch various programs. Not a feature I'll use, I think, but still pretty cool.

The fingerprint reader is sweet since it's the one thing that ensures I finally (FINALLY!)have a computer that neither my husband nor kids can tinker with. There's even a quick switch if I need to step away that will blank the screen and require a fingerprint swipe to resume. I love that! I can't tell you how many times in the past I've sat down to start writing or blogging only to find that someone either screwed with my desktop (a minor peeve), read my email and forgot to mark it as "unread" so I knew to answer it (a rather large annoyance) or, worse yet, downloaded something thats screwed up my entire PC (a major peeve). Not anymore. This laptop is mine, mine, all mine! Bwahahahahahaha!
