The Basics

Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is becoming average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library.

Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 2.0 GHz Mobile AMD Sempron 3300+ found in this notebook is speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3-D gaming. This processor features AMD's Cool'n'Quiet Technology, which conserves power while also keeping the notebook's decibels to a minimum. It also features up to a 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 128 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (333 MHz) is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.

CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

The 15.4-inch LCD offers a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The widescreen display gives increases the width of the notebook's display while giving the computer the form factor of a smaller computer, so it takes up less space on your desk or in your briefcase. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3-D graphics. It delivers 128 MB of dedicated video RAM (separate with the system memory). ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with microphone and headphone jacks.

This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (in addition to a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. I bot this at Office max, in santa rosa n california. 596.oo not bad, pluged it in the wall, at first it seemed kinda slow, but then I installed the update just once. and it was very fast. it still can be slow with some software.I installed music match juke box and it seemed slower for some reason, music match juke box, still not bad, but I must say at time yes it will get slow. so down load all the microsft up dates just once ,then turn the updates off, over rall its 4 rating. Installation disc is nice and it allows u to use it and erase your own computer with out taking it in to proffessional and the disc put every thing back on , the tecnology newer. its got ,newer installation disc tecnology. save a lot of time. Great computer, I got a good deal In santa rosa California 596.oo I had to do that rebate crap. but its fine.I have 2 laptops HP Pavilion zx5000 $1800.oo its got Pentium 4 chip,,,. also wanted a cheaper laptop to take with me every where. HP owns Compaq so I trusted the company,HP is dell Enemy number 1. so I bot Compaq presaro V5201us and I found I like it better then my other computer. because its got some new tecnoly thats easier. go ahead and buy one but do as I say. update all your software , Great laptop HP & Compact is great company

Great Notebook at a Great Price.......2006-08-01

Everything has worked well so far after a few weeks my only concern is that I noticed where there began to be a diagonal line on the screen about the middle of the top to about halfway down of the screen, its not a scratc or dead pixels I cant explain it, not sure what it is. It's really not that noticeable but oh well. Also, it doesnt come with a recovery CD so you have to make one on your own with 12 CD-r's or 1 DVD+R DL disc, for some reason it doesnt create a recovery disk to a DVD-DL Disc. Wireless is awesome screen display is awesome weight and price are awesome, I dont know about thother review from the one star guy but I love this laptop, Id buy another in a second! ! ! !

Hardware crash three weeks from new!.......2006-08-01

Three weeks after I bought the darn thing it crashed. I only installed Microsoft Office software. I'm working away on a project when bam! The Blue Screen of Death appears to inform me that Windows XP had to quit. Then a totally dark screen.

Then the system starts back up, with a box offering to send an error report to Microsoft. I click it. Microsoft thinks for a minute then writes back: hardware failure. Either the memory, the power supply or the motherboard is defective. They're not sure which, but it's serious. The computer is obviously working for the moment, but unreliable.

Now I'm stuck. I can replace the computer, but Microsoft won't let me load their software a second time. I'll have to shell out $hundreds again for software I just purchased.

My opinion: I'm sorry I took a chance on this cheap computer. As someone once said, "The anguish of low quality endures long after the thrill of low price is gone."
