Amazon.com Product Description

Here's the latest contender in the race to build the thinnest, most stylish phone on the planet. In fact, the Samsung t509 is one of the skinniest phones money can buy, measuring just .39 inches thick, or 10 millimeters. Amazingly, this phone also happens to pack a lot of features into its svelte frame, including Bluetooth, a VGA camera, support for EDGE high speed data, a speakerphone, and more. It's a the perfect way to slim down and take advantage of T-Mobile service.

<small><b>So thin, it almost disappears when turned sideways. View the t509 in 3D, or check out a feature presentation.</b> <small></td></tr></table> <B>Design</B>
One look at this phone and you'll wonder where the phone went. The design is simple, refined, and--once again--thin. The numeric keypad resides below a circular five-way control toggle that controls most of the phone's menus and functions. The large, 176 x 220 display supports up to 65,000 colors, while 10.5 MB of internal memory gives you plenty of room for pictures, contacts, and other data. The t509's VGA camera unit resides on the rear of the phone, and there's a port for plugging in the included hands-free headset.

<B>Calling Features</B>
The t509's phone book can store up to 1000 contacts, phone numbers and addresses, while a call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls. In addition to a vibrating alert, the t509 supports polyphonic ringtones. You can also download additional ringtones from T-Mobile's t-zones service. A speakerphone lets you talk hands-free while you're doing other things, and picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. Like all T-Mobile phones, the t509 also supports voicemail, caller ID, conference calling, call forwarding, call waiting, call hold, built-in paging, and access to T-Mobile's 411 service. Lastly, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.

<B>Messaging, Internet, and Tools</B>
The t509 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. Instant messaging clients for AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, and ICQ are included.

Getting on the Internet is easy with the t509, too. It supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the new, high speed EDGE data protocol. When used with a T-Mobile data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. There's also a built-in browser for t-zones downloads and mobile Web browsing. T-Mobile's t-zones service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile text messaging users.

A number of handy productivity tools are bundled with the t509 including a voice memo recorder, an alarm clock, a calculator with unit converter, and a calendar.

<B>Imaging and Entertainment</B>
The t509's built-in VGA (640 x 480) camera captures stills and video to the phone's 10 MB of internal memory. The camera captures videos of up to 15 seconds in length at 176 x 144 resolution.

Meanwhile, if you want to dress up your t509, picture effects, custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be set to fit your personality. Plus, Java support is built into the t509, making it a powerful gaming companion. Games are downloadable via the t-zones service.

<B>Vital Statistics</B>
The Samsung SGH-t509 weighs 2.7 ounces and measures 4.6 x 1.83 x 0.39 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 172 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Drives me nuts.......2007-02-22

It's pretty...and that's about it.

My previous phone (Nokia 6010) outshines this one in performance, hands down, no questions asked. If it weren't so thin and complimented (I've never received so many "wow that's cool" comments in my life!), I would've returned it in a heartbeat because the performance absolutely sucks.

Issues:
-Quiet ringer... if I'm in a place with any sort of environmental noise AT ALL, I can't hear the phone and miss the call
-Weak vibrator... I keep it in the front pocket of my jeans and rarely feel it vibrate. That's saying something.
-Quiet alert tones... I'm an avid texter, and I've had this phone for several weeks now. However, I think I've only heard the text message tone go off about 4 or 5 times. I'm constantly missing messages because it's so dang quiet. Also, the alarm would never wake me up in a million years.
-Poor sound quality... It's really quiet, and I can't hear or understand people half as well as I could with my previous phone. By far the most annoying feature.
-Poor microphone quality... Apparently I sound really weird when I'm talking to other people. They are constantly asking me to repeat things. Probably the second most annoying feature.
-Crappy camera by comparison... You would think they'd start putting nice cameras in these things by now. Granted, you get what you pay for. I paid $20. It shows.

I never had any of these problems with my Nokia (which was a free phone, by the way). Needless to say, I'm a bit disappointed.

Granted, it does look really cool. As an industrial design student, I have a real appreciation for the cool factor. Even if it is really tall...

4 out of 5 stars Almost a 5 star.......2007-02-21

I would have given this phone a 5 star rating, but there are a few design ticks that prevent me from doing that.

Let me start out by saying that graphics, size, battery life all great. The biggest tick is in the way the headset, recharge port works and here's why:

1) You can't use a wired handset while you are charging the phone, they use the same port so forget trying to do both. The only way around that is via a blue tooth handset.

2) Also related to the port... the port is on the side of the phone, with either the wired handset or the charger plugged in, the L angled plug makes the phone hard and uncomfortable to hold. Too bad the port could not have been located on the bottom of the phone where the grip would not be obstructed.

3) If you have the phone in your pocket, you will want to definitely use the keylock function because you can just breath wrong and the phone will start randomly dialing people. Meaning, the the dialing can be easily tripped by turning wrong and having the pocket press a key.

If you could live with those issues, you will love the phone.

3 out of 5 stars I'm already a bit dissapointed.......2007-02-01

I've only had this phone for a couple of days but I really wish the soft keys on the main screen were customizable. I always kept my alarm clock on the left and my recent calls on the right but now I'm stuck with T-Zones on one of them. I'm so annoyed that I'm thinking about returning it.

4 out of 5 stars Great free upgrade!.......2007-01-28

I replaced my tired old Sony Ericsson T610 with this Samsung since it was a free upgrade from T-Mobile. The specs are similar to the T610, but everything is a notch better.

Reception was always poor on the T610. I didn't even have to silence it at work since it would never get a signal inside. The Samsung has no problems in the same building. My battery was dying on the T610, but T-Mobile wouldn't give me a new one--they'd rather give me a whole new phone. This one lasts for days with light usage. The camera is only 640x480, which isn't that great, but it's an order of magnitude better than the T610's, which is only like 176x244. The screen is also bigger, brighter and has more resolution.

I tried TMobileweb with the T610 but it was so slow it was practically useless. I reinstated it with the T509 and it is surprisingly useful...Yahoo Mail works great.

Some of the ringtones are pretty quiet, as others have noted, but I've found some MIDIs online that work great. Just Bluetooth them over to the phone. There are some arbitrary restrictions, though. While the phone can play MP3s, you are prevented from using them as a ringtone. You can get around this restriction by changing the file type to a different format. Instructions are available on the internet.

I prefer "bar" phones, which is why I had the T610. This one is set up similarly, but is about a half inch longer. I wish it was a tiny bit shorter so it'd fit in my pocket better. But that's nitpicking.

All in all I am very happy with this phone.

2 out of 5 stars Cute, but works terribly!.......2007-01-17

I upgraded to this phone and had problems with it the day after receiving it. It looks great and the graphics are amazing, but the reception is poor, the ringer is not loud enough (even when set on the maximum level), and the speaker is incredibly poor. All of my friends and family have a difficult time hearing me even when I'm yelling. If anything, this phone helped me cut down talk time because I get so frustrated using it. Perhaps it's just the phone that I got. Who knows?
