The Basics

Hard Drive: Large and in charge, the 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 20,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. While this notebook is actually as wide as standard 15-inch displays, the high-definition, widescreen 14-inch display (1280 x 800-pixel resolution) has the same form factor as a 12-inch screen--taking up less space on your desk. Battery life is so so without the extended life (150.00) battery, Entirely too much preloaded garbage software that needs to be immediately removed for any real performance out of he machine. There's four different screens used in the dv2000 construction process, only one of them that's really competitive in the market nowadays (QDS) RUN from any others (SEC) most notably. As mentioned in another review, keyboard keys have been intermittently sticky.
Warranty HORRORS, my screen went out at about 45 days, it took 2 hours on the phone with HP Indian Tech-support that doesn't speak even marginal english to get an RMA to return the unit. Although registering the purchase on HPs website, tech support did not have the information but DID have a purchase date of July 17, 2006 that was actually November 10th, 2006 and I was told of about 20 hoops I have to jump to correct the discrepancy (Although the laptop was purchased new, registered with HP on the date of purchase, rebate check processed and mailed to me, etc etc) I've never seen anything this bad and I can only hope and prey they actually get the thing fixed and returned to me ASAP as I like most of YOU use this thing as a lifeline in business.

READ ON to other machines and pass this thing by like the plague! Wish I had.

Stay Away.......2006-11-09

After a month using this laptop intensively, I'm returning it. First and foremost, the keyboard is falling apart. Several of the keys are now squeaking when I hit them, and my ctrl key is all but useless - it sticks. That means I can't use hot keys which is critical. Second, my iTunes audio skips freqently and my MS Office programs are prone to take 10-15 second naps when I'm editing. Very lame. I tried an HP because it seemed like a good value, but now I know why - they took shortcuts, including and especially some of the hardware. I'm going back to Toshiba.

Excellent Laptop.......2006-07-27

HP dv2050us is an excellent laptop in the market.

1. Lightweight (at 5.3 lbs but could have been below 5 lbs with a lighter battery.), could do with a higher battery life else an extral battery can be purchased.
2. Fast dual core processor with centrino - having lots of applications going on at the same time doesnt heat up the laptop when compared to the earlier one I have.
3. Huge RAM - definately the selling point for the laptop as no other laptop in the market comes with a 2 GB RAM - does save the time and money in adding more RAM to the laptop later. Since most of the applications are using more and more RAM, a 2 GB RAM is definately ahead of the cycle for RAM usage currently.
4. Lightscribe DVD burner is a nice feature to have but could have included an 16X speed burner instead of an 8X one.
5. Lots of add-ons included which save both money and storage space in your laptop kit like an inbuilt card reader and an inbuilt webcam + mike. Tested the mike on the standard messengers and quality is excellent for the talking from a distance of about 24" or so. No distortion of voice at the other end of the conversation.
6. Webcam is at 1.3 MB - upper range for included webcams and works fine on all the standard messengers on the market. Webcam will not start automatically inspite of having an inbuilt one - good feature to have.
7. Widescreen at 14.1" is standard since its not too small and not to big. XVGA is present. Definately a jump from the standard VGA screens without having to pay extra.
8. Included quickplay software for DVDs is excellent and the addon remote is a very good feature to have when watching movies on the laptop. Not having to constantly "mouse" around for the movie volume, fast forward etc. Remote comes with a battery
included. Backlit lights for the movie controls on the laptop are a nice feature.
9. Warranty is the standard 1 yr one for laptops which is useful since most of the likely defects / problems will occur in the first year itself.
10. 120 GB hard drive is sufficient but 20 GB out of that is used for backups and Operating System files so in effect the hard drive space is around 100 GB. Sufficient for current usage if you are doing all your backups on DVDs / external media. Will be less in about a year or so. Can be replaced with a higher capacity hard drive later.
11. Plugins - All the plugins are on the side - very good feature to have since almost always the external gadgets will be on the side of the laptop or in front - never behind the laptop. Comes with USB plugins on both sides of the laptop - definately a plus so as not to cramp up one side of the laptop with too many things.
12. Backups - the laptop creates backups on 3 DVDs at initial startup. A new feature from the earlier laptops where we are provided OS DVDs etc. Not very clear as to what each of the 3 DVDs has - could use with more information etc on each DVD
by default.
13. Wireless Device is the standard device available on most laptops in the market. Has a on - off switch for wi-fi in front - excellent addon to stop access to wi-fi if not needed. Adds that extra bit of security for sensitive work without having to
go through a cumbersome process of disabling and enabling wi-fi access.
14. Less Noise - the laptop makes much less noise as compared to other laptops.
15. Comes with a Windows XP Home OS - sufficient for most needs -but can do with a Windows XP Pro OS for top of the range softwares.

Summary:
A very lightweight laptop having a fast processor and huge RAM with lots of features added keeping the average as well as the advanced user in mind. Definately a very good bargain for the price backed by the HP brandname.
