Customer Reviews:
Good performance, but some quirks..........2007-02-08
First the good points:
..Good (as expected) performance. though I haven't upgraded to Vista yet.
..Great tablet convertible if you need performance over weight.
..It's a tablet which is way cooler than I ever realized.
But then the not-so-good points:
.. Terrible keyboard layout (more on this later).
.. The screen allows dust behind it. I've had it for 2 weeks and it hasn't been anywhere too dusty and there's junk in there already.
.. It's fairly heavy. It's a workout to use as a tablet if you can't set it down. The extra battery seems to add that extra amount that makes the thing too heavy to use as a tablet.
..They single hinge system works well, except they put in a piece that snaps off right under the hinge (actually around it) that pops off and gets in the way about 50% of the time and is a bugger to put back on. This happened right out of the box.
..You can't charge the extra battery while in the docking station. I realized this when purchasing, but then find it's silly to plug into the docking station, but also give it some plugged-in time while not docked to charge the battery.
..The latch-release button that holds the screen to the base is sooo touchy that if you breathe on it wrong the screen pops up. This affects both tablet & notebook mode.
..Pricier, heavier than the some others.
I noticed the keyboard layout issue when I was looking to purchase and found it a bit odd. It's worse than that. If I didn't use it for pen input a lot of the time I'd have to get rid of the thing. I use keyboard shortcuts a lot when it's in notebook mode, but even if you didn't you'd find yourself searching (and cursing) the lack of the right control key. the odd position of the insert and delete key and the continual laptop error of putting the fn key in an important place (and in this case displacing the windows key and putting the ~ key next to the space bar!??)
But it's a tablet PC, and it is pretty speedy so I'm still happy with it. There are others to check out that are lighter and cheaper but didn't quite work for what I wanted.
Though the feels well made, the loose-hinge thing along with a few parts that have play in them (like the battery can "wiggle" around a bit) that make me wonder what this machine will be like in a year or two. The single hinge & latch means that the screen has a bit of play when you put pressure on the corners -- which you do with the pen from time to time (like when you are closing a window & clicking on the systray) and makes it tricky to click quite the way you want.
