No problems so far........2007-06-09
I have had my unit for a month so far without any problems. I connected it to my wireless network and have had no problem accessing it. Works incredibly fast. I have to log in every time I turn on my computer &/or the drive but not much of a problem since my computer remains on most of the time.
It is very quiet and feels very solid. I have been transferring data from some of my older and smaller drives with no problems. Even after a computer crash (not the drive's fault), it came right back up and kept working -- something several of my USB external drives could not do very well.
Wish it had more tools. There appears to be no way to do a disk defragment on the drive. Something to repartition would have been welcome and very handy -- It came up as a single 1 TB drive. A disk checker would have been nice. Perhaps I just do not know how to access any of these things; or I need to bring it up as a USB drive to do them.
Same experience as the other posters.......2007-05-14
The second day after I purchased this product the power light started flashing amber. This error code is not listed in the actual manual, but on the maxtor site it states that it means there's a problem with the file system... I have to throw my vote in with the others, avoid this product.
Returned after a week.......2007-04-30
According to the Seagate/Maxtor website concerning this drive, "RAID 1 automatically mirrors a copy of your data for an extra level of security." As other reviewers have made clear, this is simply false advertising if you can't replace a faulty drive and rebuild the RAID data.
In spite of this, I might have kept this drive around if it weren't for it's slow and ineffective software. After a couple of days of fiddling with it, I managed to get a shared folder set up on my Windows XP desktop machine and copied about 85GB of music files to it. I was also able to access the folder through my Windows Vista laptop, which I thought was great.
Then "something happened" after a couple of days and I lost access to the shared folder through my desktop computer. This happened in spite of the fact that I hadn't installed any new software or changed my network configuration in any way. The Maxtor setup utility could see the drive and showed that the folder was mounted, but Windows couldn't access the drive and told me that the connection hadn't been restored.
I tried remounting the folder and reinstalling the utility, but nothing helped. I tried looking at the support information on Seagate's website, but there's little to no help for this drive.
I suppose I could have resolved this issue by calling Seagate support, but given the other limitations of this drive, I didn't think it was worth spending any more of my time on it.
The final insult with this drive came when I uninstalled the software, and it seems to have also deleted or corrupted some necessary drivers on my computer. The system became very slow to boot and last night crashed with a driver problem. Fortunately I did a full backup the day before I uninstalled the software, and I'm restoring that now. After that, I'll see if I can remove that software in Safe Mode.
This drive is small, quiet, and attractive. Too bad it has such dreadful support from Seagate. And, in my opinion, too bad Seagate bought Maxtor, which used to make good reliable drives.
IF YOU HAVE THIS DRIVE - BACK UP YOUR DATA AND RETURN IT ASAP.......2007-03-09
Under 1 month of use, and the drive failed. It sounds like a grandfather clock with the head trying to synch with the drive, and the green flashing light of death is on constantly. Seagate (who purchased Maxtor) qouted over the phone $2000 - $7000 for data recovery depending on how many of the internal drives failed. I also noticed the internal fan isn't even moving after inspecting why the drive heats up so quickly. This drive is now a $600 doorstop, containing a project that is worth about $50,000, and will take a couple thousand to recover. Welcome to the future of hard drives, where the companies sell these things for dirt cheap to sucker you into a purchase, so they can make the real money on multi-thousand dollar recovery services. Do yourself a favor, and buy a decent tape backup system. They should rename this drive to MAXTOR S*** STORAGE!
Simply put: It's an appalling hoax........2007-02-21
Maxtor / Seagate should be ashamed of perpetrating this appalling hoax, the Maxtor Shared Storage II, on the SOHO market.
As other writers have indicated, if one side of the RAID 1 goes down, you're done. Your options are: have Maxtor ship you a new one (you can't keep your old hardware, so you've effectively lost both discs of your RAID, not just the one that failed) or, and this is according to Seagate's own Tier 2 engineers, you have to pay a data recovery service to get your data back for you.
There are no tools to rebuild the raid available. The box is sealed: you can't replace the drive yourself. There's no console available to access the Linux server running on the box.
The drives are fragile. Two months after buying this unit, the front panel LED began to blink, indicating a "RAID problem." I can't wait to see what kind of circus getting a new unit will be, just as soon as I figure out how to get my data of this piece of rubbish.
It's a sham, a hoax of a product and all concerned should be at least as embarrassed as I am to have fallen for it.
