Samsung 205BW Rocks.......2007-05-29
Background: I'm using the Samsung 205BW with HP Pavilion a1610n. I replaced a 19" Gateway monitor (not sure of the model since I got rid of it already) that died. The system is used for work running Office 2007, Vista Business, Adobe 7 Professional, Firefox/IE 7, Cisco VPN & RDP. When I login as a limited user, I have all of the "beautiful" Vista stuff turned off and tuned for maximum performance and security. I left my wife and daughters Aero beautifying stuff turned on just for kicks.
Monitor & Video Settings: Resolution is set at 1680 X 1050 with color depth at 32 bit using an Nvidia 6150 LE (maximum performance for 3D) integrated video. When I'm logged in as administrator, everything is downgraded even further since I don't spend time using that account....just for maintenace and upgrades.
Performance: The out-of-the box performance was exceptional. Vista picked it up without any problems and looked great compared to the Gateway, Hanns, Cornea and HP that I have used. I installed the application that came with the monitor which allowed me to tweak the settings further. However, I decided to uninstall it since I could do all of the adjustment that I needed from the menu buttons at the right hand side of the monitor. Please note that the monitor was very bright (default setting for brightness is 100%). I turned it down the brightness to 50% with a 75% contrast. This was inline with what I am accustomed to from the other monitors that I use at home and a 22" Gateway monitor at work.
For those who maybe wondering about QA. There was no dead pixel, no ghosting, no unusual flickering, no adjustment issues whatsoever and all of this using a standard VGA connection. It should be noted that I picked it up locally for $199 + tax so there was no transport issues that could result in problems due to handling or lack of it. Again the monitor works well with the applications that I use as mentioned previously. One last note, using a Cisco VPN (5.x) and RDP to connect to my office is very good and works better with the Samsung because (in my opinion) of the widescreen format and the same resolution that I have remotely. Great buy, Great monitor!!!!!
beautiful monitor..........2007-04-22
I bought this wide format monitor for home use with my (work provided) HP laptop. At the office I have one of those glorious ultra-high resolution does-it-all flat panels which also feature an *amazing* price. When it's my own money, I need to be a bit more careful.
So I went with the Samsung, since I've had superlative experience with their CRT and flat-panel displays, like their included software, and, when I did comparison at local big-box stores, found the display quality to be very good indeed.
The screen is bright--brighter than nearly all of the competing models. It is clear and responsive. I have no complaints abou the display. The base is solid and adjusts in all directions...
Now the complaint: I purchased the "wide" model because most of the Samsungs "tilt" (rotate into a portrait display) and I prefer to use my big displays in portrait. The similar, non-widescreen 215B model does rotate, and this model comes with the Samsung rotation software. I couldn't tell from the product specs whether it did or it didn't (and the reviews were confusing). I assumed, ultimately, that since the narrow model did, that this one would too...
Only it doesn't rotate (tilt). Do not be fooled: it doesn't. However, there is a nifty trick here. There are no eletronics in the base. I simply unscrewed the monitor from the base, rotated it by 270 degrees, and reattached it. There is a funky clip on the back that doesn't quite fit, but since I'm not carrying the monitor around a lot, this doesn't bother me, and the attachment is nearly as solid as from the factory.
Otherwise, this monitor has been simply perfect, especially at the price.
The stand is terrible.......2007-04-22
I bought mine in 2006, and now my monitor is tilt down, too. Indeed, the stand is terribly designed not to be able to hold the weight of the monitor. Otherwise, it's a great monitor.
Defective Stand And No Warranty Support.......2007-04-15
If it were not for the defective stand I would rate the product with 5 stars. The monitor itself works great. I purchased the monotor in Oct 06 and about a month later it started to tilt downward and would not adjust back up. It kept getting worse until eventually it was locked tilting fully down. Like others who have posted the same problem, I had to stuff books or whatever under the stand to tilt the entire thing back far enough to see anything. Eventually, I got so aggravated I muscled the stand mount bracket back up. It finally broke in two pieces. Efforts to contact Samsung for warranty support have gone unanswered. Since we are a Military family stationed overseas, I was willing to forget the warranty and buy a new stand but apparently you can't even do that. There are three links on the Samsung web site to vendors that supposedly have the stand. Only two of the sites work and of those, neither of them lists the monitor, much less a replacement stand. It is probably just as well because after reading other's posts about the problem, most likely an original replacement stand would have the same defective problem anyway. So, unless I can somehow make a stand or find an aftermarket replacement, my monitor is useless.
keep in mind a three-year warranty is just a bunch of words on paper if the company has no intentions to honor it. You might be better off considering another manufacturer.
Defective Stand/Support Hinge .......2007-02-19
To echo the comments made by the last couple reviewers. The LCD Monitor started to tilt way from the stand and within the last week, decided to give way and has peeled away from it's support hinge on the stand. While the LCD Monitor itself is pretty good, i can't give any more than 2 stars given this issue.
