Amazon Product Description
The Basics
Part of IBM's "R" series of ThinkPad mobile computers, the ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) Notebook offers mid-level performance and wireless upgradeability for a price that won't break the bank. Quite compact when compared to the majority of notebooks but lacking adequate memory and processing power for applications beyond mobile basics such as word processing, contact management, sales data and the like, the ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) is an ideal solution for those who prioritize portability and price over performance.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are fast enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) is equipped with a 1.8 GHz Intel Celeron processor running at 1.8 GHz. The Celeron line of CPUs is Intel's most cost-effective, delivering adequate power for the essentials but not enough for comparatively advanced tasks such as graphic design, high-end business applications and the latest games.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) is equipped with the bare minimum recommended memory for today's digital world, 128 MB. Users must upgrade to 256 MB, 512 MB or the unit's 1 GB limit in order to effectively multitask or run complex applications without experiencing periods of sluggishness.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller), the best of which include their own "dedicated" built-in video memory rather than "sharing" portions of the system's valuable main memory. Though this notebook's graphics card (an ATI Mobility Radeon M6) does incorporate dedicated memory, it features just 16 MB of it and is therefore not sufficient for advanced 3D applications such as complex games or animation.

Display
Given its compact dimensions, the ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) features a comparatively generous 14.1-inch TFT display screen. The maximum resolution of 1024 by 768 provides sufficient detail for most applications.

Hard Disk
At just 20 GB, the integrated hard drive will store an average number of programs and user files but cannot also warehouse a library of music and multimedia files or digital photos.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, through which you can do everything above but burn DVDs.

Audio
The unit is equipped with a standard SoundMAX audio chip and stereo speakers.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via a full size keyboard and IBM's user-friendly ThinkPad UltraNav multi-pointing system.

Connectivity and Expansion
The ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) sports a minimal array of connections. Communication facilities include a 10/100 Ethernet interface for high-speed Internet and email, a standard 56K modem for low-speed dial-up connectivity, and wireless upgradeability. Other key amenities include two fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras and an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data streaming from digital camcorders).

Operating System and Software
Users of the ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) will benefit from today's most advanced operating system, Microsoft's beefy Windows XP Professional Edition.

Dimensions and Weight
Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and definitely too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that are typically less powerful than their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) is exceedingly compact and comfortable at just 6.17 lbs and 10 by 6.17 by 1.54 inches.

Power
Powering the ThinkPad R40 (26814GU) is an 8-cell Lithium-Ion battery.

Other hardware features include a bright, high-definition 12.1-inch LCD, large 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), Bluetooth 2.0 wireless connectivity, variable-speed DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive, and Windows XP Professional Edition operating system.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: You'll be able to store large libraries of digital audio, video, and photos on the 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM)--one of the largest hard drive capacities you'll find currently in multimedia notebooks (May 2006). This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. In addition, Acer's patented DASP--or Disc Anti-Shock Protection system--reduces the impact of knocks and bumps.
  • Processor: The 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.

Each processing core has a 512 KB L2 cache (for a 1 MB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

  • Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC5300, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. It maxes out at 2 GB, enabling you to handle immersive 3-D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The modular slot-loaded variable-speed DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive offers the following write speeds: 24X CD-R,16X CD-RW, 8X DVD-R, 8X DVD+R, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW, 5X DVD-RAM, 4X DVD-R DL (double-layer), 4X DVD+R DL (double-layer).
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The 84-key Acer FineTouch keyboard features a five-degree curve, inverted T cursor layout, embedded numeric keypad, hotkey controls, 2.5mm minimum key travel, and international language support. It also offers front-access WLAN and Bluetooth LED switches and a touchpad with four-way integrated scroll button.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 12.1-inch WXGA LCD has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching movies in their intended 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon Xpress 1150, which delivers stable and reliable visual power for business and communications applications, demanding 3-D games, and the coming Windows Vista operating system. It also has an integrated audio card with Microsoft DirectSound and Sound Blaster Pro compatibility.

Acer's CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments. It's great for sophisticated professional applications, photo manipulation, and immersive 3-D games.

    Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This notebook features an integrated 802.11n wireless LAN (with Acer's SignalUp technology for enhanced antenna efficiency) for connecting to 802.11b and 802.11g wi-fi routers, and it's ready for future release of the 802.11n standard. It also offers integrated Bluetooth 2.0 wireless connectivity for synchronizing and transferring data between your PC and your PDA or cell phone, connecting to Bluetooth-enabled printers, and more. It features the following connectivity options:

    Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. Other preloaded software titles include CyberLink PowerDVD, Norton AntiVirus, and NTI CD-Maker.

    Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 11.9 x 8.7 x 1.4 inches (WxDxH) and weighs 4 pounds (with batteries).

    Power
It comes with two lithium ion batteries--one 6-cell and one 3-cell. You'll get up to 4.5 hours life with both batteries depending on configuration and usage; 2.0 hours recharge time with power off, 2.5 hours with power on, 80% charge in 1.0 hour.

    3 out of 5 stars Acceptional.......2007-05-07

Compared to a similar brand laptop (Vaio SZ permium), I don't believe this laptop is the best for me as I probably thought.

Screen is too small for either gaming or seriose work. One inch bigger with sony does make a difference!

The weight isn't very light, the lack of a built in cd drive is something I didn't like either.

    Other than that, its OK.
