Amazon.com Product Description

The sleek, easy-to-use LG VX5300 offers all the great features of its predecessor, the LG VX5200, but adds a lighter design and an improved display. The phone also boasts Bluetooth, instant messaging, and polyphonic ringtones. LG packs impressive features into this traditional, clamshell-design phone. See it in 3D.

Design
The phone features a traditional clamshell design with a vibrant 128 x 160 pixel color display with 262,000 colors. A supplementary full-color 96 x 64 external OLED screen displays call information, signal strength, and more. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. The top right side of the unit houses an antenna while the USB-capable data and charging port is housed on the unit's bottom edge. There's also a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets. An integrated VGA camera with a flash and a 2x digital zoom is housed on the front cover of the phone.
Calling Features
The VX5300's built-in address book can store up to 500 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. Speaker-independent voice recognition allows you to make calls and access other essential features, all without ever touching the device. Simply place the phone in driving mode, and voice commands for contacts, digit dialing, redial, voice mail, driving, schedule and time are all made available so you can control all of the phone's basic functions with the sound of your voice. Meanwhile, a built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Plus, picture ID functionality lets you assign photos or other images to callers. And because the VX5300 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.
The VX5300's GPS location technology pinpoints your location when you dial 911. Perhaps most importantly for users in rural areas, the VX5300 is a tri-mode phone, meaning it can operate on Verizon's digital networks, as well as analog networks that serve many outlying areas.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The VX5300 covers the messaging basics with support for sending and receiving text, pictures and sound via the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). Instant messaging is also supported. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit -- a plus for mobile text messaging users.
Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the VX5300, as well. Verizon's optional Mobile Web package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can check your e-mail, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater.
The VX5300 includes a personal organizer that includes a calendar, scheduler, alarm clock, and notepad. Other useful tools include a world clock, calculator, and a handy restaurant-tip calculator. You can also use the phone's Bluetooth capability to send vCard-based contacts information to other Bluetooth devices. And lastly, the phone's voice memo recorder can store up to 100 one-minute memos.
Imaging and Entertainment
The fun really starts with the VX5300's built-in VGA (640x480) camera and flash, which features a self-timer, multi-shot functions, white balance adjustment, and brightness controls. The phone includes 16 MB of internal memory for photo and data storage. And if you want to make your VX5300 reflect your personality, it features customizable theme colors, screen backgrounds, fonts and caller ID graphics and pictures.
Vital Statistics
The LG VX5300 weighs 3.28 oz and measures 3.51 x 1.87 x 0.94 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to three hours of digital talk time, and up to 190 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the AMPS 850/CDMA 850/CDMA 1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Note: The VX5300 supports the Headset, Handsfree, Serial Port, Dial Up Networking and Object Push profiles for vCard. It does not support all Bluetooth object transfer (OBEX) profiles.

4 out of 5 stars Keys are Hard to Read.......2007-03-30

A good all-round phone, but the key markings are hard to read. Previous LG models had a lens cover and nice high-contrast keys (although not back-lit).

Sad to see LG ignoring the basics while working so hard on the fluff.

My daughters drop their VX5200 and VX6100 on concrete about once a week with never a problem and this phone looks like it will hold up equally well.

The charger is unfortunately NOT compatible with the VX5200, VX6100.

4 out of 5 stars LG VX5300 Good Basic Phone.......2007-03-26

Very good basic phone with enough features including tri mode, GPS with blue tooth, fair camera pictures, etc. great sound and voice quality. Limited ring tones and the speaker phone button is awkwardly placed. Overall a very very good basic cell phone for the everyday user, But not for the hi tech cell phone addict.

1 out of 5 stars Freezes unexpectedly. Unreliable. Miss calls........2007-03-16

This phone is prone to freezing unexpectedly at intervals ranging from 4 hours to several days. There are no visible symptoms. It looks normal. Then when you try to call someone the screen goes dead. The only way to "reset" it is to open up the back, remove the battery and then put it back and reassemble the back. Then you discover you've missed several hours worth of incoming calls as it downloads all the phone messages and missed calls information.

I've read other posts on the internet about this same phone model freezing for many other people, so its not just mine.

When I took the phone back to Verizon, the tech told me "all cell phones do this" and suggested I just get in the habit of reseating the battery every so often.

5 out of 5 stars The PHONE is great.......2007-03-15

We have had four of these (two currently) and they have worked very well. One went into a swimming pool and survived; I lost a Motorola once to a *splash* in a puddle. These phones received hard use and were dropped, etc. One died completely and had to be replaced (it was insured, fortunately); I don't know whether to blame LG but my experience with the brand overall -- we also have two vx8100's that work great -- has been excellent and I won't buy any other brand that Verizon offers. If it breaks on you it really doesn't matter how nice it once was.

If you think Verizon, or whatever service provider, stinks, and it seems most do at some point, don't blame LG, it is a good brand to the extent of my experience.

A tip, consider getting a USB cable for a couple dollars at eBay so you can backup the contents of the phone to your computer, as well as add ringtones and so on free of the Verizon monopoly (use freeware "BitPim" on the Mac).

1 out of 5 stars Customer service disaster.......2007-02-17

DO NOT buy this phone unless you're willing to endure continuous calls from Verizon Wireless if you try to close your account.

Last week, shortly after telling Verizon's sales person I was switching to T-Mobile because their Customer Service is a disaster, I began getting three to five calls each day that hang up as soon as I answer. Doing a *69 revealed they were coming from 1-800-470-0768, Verizon Wireless' number. Calling a supervisor (Jasen) resulted in an apology and him putting me on their Do Not Call list, which he says won't take effect for 30 days. He also said this is a "known problem with Verizon's auto-dialer" for which Verizon has no solution. It's only noon and so far today I've gotten three calls from them, two hangups and another sales pitch to upgrade my phones and stay with Verizon Wireless.

I'd rather stick needles in my eyes.
