Product Description

LaCie F.A. Porsche 320GB External Hard Drive - As the drives that come with our computers get larger, it becomes less practical to backup all of our files to multiple DVD disks. With an external hard drive, you can copy it all over with ease. This external drive can contain up to 320GB of data, and transfers it over USB 2.0, for up to 480Mbps of transfer speed. An important feature when you're talking about possibly transferring 320GB of data! Also, being an external device, it has to sit on your desk. Yes, the idea of another ugly gadget cluttering up things isn't that appealing, but LaCie thought of that problem. They enlisted the expertise of the world famous design agency, Porsche Design GmbH. So this drive features a sleek and sexy exterior that is stackable for future expansion. Rubber feet for easy stacking Fanless Unit Dimensions - 1.4 (h) x 4.4 (w) x 7.4 (l) Unit Weight - 31.7 oz.

2 out of 5 stars Not good for being on 24/7.......2007-06-10

The heat is trapped inside the unit. With out the heat being trapped inside the unit, the failure rate is increased the longer it is on. If your using it just to back up files then turn it off its great. But again would not recommend for 24/7 use.

4 out of 5 stars Looks like a steel brick, performance is just about as steady!.......2007-06-09

Nothing fancy about the design of this USB drive, but the performance is excellent. I've had mine in operation for over a year now, ever since the other brand (the unnamed ones who make zip drives) crapped out on me in just a few months, and lost nearly 250 meg of fansubbed anime.

When I bought my computer in 2005, I had no way of knowing that twin 160 Gig hard drives was not enought these days. After all my Win98 machine had been going for 7 years, and it only had 15 Gig of space. You quickly find out that with DVR's for media center, music (which I don't personally download) and video's for anime, tv programs, or just fun take up massive amounts of drive space. A good USB drive is needed, and so far so good with the LaCie.

The LaCie is easy to use and connect, very quiet and efficient, gives off little heat, and as you can see, looks just like a retangular metal brick. It has endured my overnight downloading, and watching and deleting videos for over a year now with no complaints. Sometimes USB HD's have problems if not spun down in a computer shutdown. This one never has any problem. On several occasions due to storms or computer glitches, the computer has reboot, even with the download bit torrent client running, the LaCie does not loose it's reference at all and comes back accurately when the system is brought back up, that's another thing my other unit couldn't do all the time.

I believe this drive is the perfect solution if you want to add one of those new digital tuners to your PC. 320 Gig is enough for even a lot of HD programs, and enough for hundreds of non-HD stuff. While I don't have an HD tuner, so I can't personally verify this, my experience with high grade avi files and divx files tells me you should be able to download and watch on this unit at the same time. The only problem comes if you are running too many downloads, but even there I believe the processor becomes the bottleneck, not the LaCie.

4 out of 5 stars Works fine, not actually 320 Gigs, looks like a brick........2007-06-05

Just got this. Works fine - really there's not much to a powered USB drive. I don't even know the make of the drive inside, but for the price at the time I bought it, you couldn't do better. It works fine. Had to format it in NTFS, which took almost 2 hours, but it worked. I can copy over large files (4+ gigs) with no problem.
Cons:
1) It's not 320 Gigs. It's 298. Why the industry doesn't tell you actual # of gigs is beyond me. It's a marketing tactic I suppose. But that kind of sucks. Missing 20 gigs is like missing 5 files of DVDs I backed up. Lame.
2) Design. Wow. I don't care if this was "Exclusively designed by the renowned design agency Porsche Design GmbH" - it looks like a silver brick. OOOOO! How long did they take to design this gem? "Hey guys we have do design a hard drive." "I got it - how about a silver block? Genius!!" I don't think the design is anything special. I think it's weak they tout that as a strong point of the device, when in reality it looks like something I put together myself out of spare sheet metal.

But, it works. So I'm happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Good drive, but..........2007-05-30

Anyone considering this drive should be aware that the product description contains a misleading statement! The product description gives the impression that a USB 2.0 connection (the type used by this drive) is among the fastest available. In reality, the three other common connection types used by external drives (firewire 400, firewire 800, and eSata) are all faster than USB 2.0. See a May 2007 macworld magazine article for more info.

5 out of 5 stars A great external USB2.0 drive at an unbeatable price.......2007-05-26

This is the second LaCie F.A. Porsche 320GB external drive that I have purchased, and I have been very pleased with both of them.

I am currently using one of them formatted FAT32 on a CentOS Linux server and the other as secondary storage for my Macbook Pro (formatted HFS+). I had previously been using one formatted NTFS on my old WinXP laptop.

After 6+ months, I have yet to detect any problems. The drives were plug-n-play, and you would only have to make changes if you decided not to go with the default FAT32 format.

However, the biggest selling point is the price. This is probably the most space you'll get in the $100-$130 range, and the best deal I've found for external storage. At this price, you are paying about $0.33 per GB. Contrast that with a 500GB drive at $250 for $0.50 per GB.

All-in-all, this is a great buy.
