Customer Reviews:
Worked for about 2 months.......2007-05-14
It was a nice drive while it lasted. Unfortunately, it died after 2 months. It's still under warranty, but I'm going to opt not to return it with my personal information still on the drive. I'd rather destroy it and purchase a Western Digital. I've had better experience with WD drives. Unfortunately, I was tempted by a lower price with this drive.
M Schnell.......2007-05-08
Very good unit, i really like the maxtor equipment. i have two of
the Maxtor 500 Gb units and both are excellent units.
Big ol' HD in a smallish package.......2007-04-13
Never had an external hd but with too much music on my pc I sorely needed. after a great deal of research and input from friends I went with the Maxtor 500gb. All my music and pics are barely a blip on this baby.
Yeah the lite is oddly really bright but it makes it easier to find the pc in the dark for us eyeball-challenged folks. Watch the prices and shop around as they do fluctuate as much as $50-$100.[...].
Rock Solid Drive.......2007-04-13
I purchased this drive primarily to back up my rapidly increasing collection of photos. I upgraded from a 300 GB Maxtor OneTouch II drive and found that this model was far more than just the same package with more capacity. The case for the OneTouch III is bigger, more solid, and also provides more rubber padding on the edges to make the drive more secure physically. Short of throwing this across the room, it's hard to see how it can be damaged. Probably due in part to the heavy-duty case, this drive is also whisper quiet even when it is actively reading or writing. As with all drives, both internal and external, you do not actually get 500 GB worth of space but the 465 GB that you do receive is standard and should be plenty for most people.
The packaged software is simple to use and will be sufficient for simple back up needs. Since I keep all of my data on a separate internal drive, it is a snap for me to copy that drive to this one. If you have more complex needs, then you may want to check out third party software but that will probably be true no matter which brand of drive you buy, as none of them are likely to have top-notch software included.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this package to use either as back up or portable storage. For sheer portability, it is a bit bulky but would still easily fit in any briefcase. I have been using mine for roughly two months now, and it has been both easy to use and 100% reliable.
Terrible Backup Software.......2007-01-23
I bought the Maxtor OneTouch III based on its great reviews. It is a fine portable disk, but the backup software is completely unacceptable. In very fine print the manual tells you that it does not back up hidden or busy files. Hidden files include Microsoft Outlook mailboxes, among other important files. If you have your mail or another file open when the backup runs, it is not backed up. You can replace the bad Maxtor backup software with another backup program, but then you are just using the Maxtor as an expensive external drive.
