Fans of portable MP3 players have a seemingly endless variety of options from which to choose, but if budget, size, and durability are a priority, flash memory-based players are the way to go. Substantially smaller and less expensive than the alternatives and utilizing shockproof flash memory rather than comparatively fragile hard drives or CD mechanisms, flash memory players deliver excellent durability and bang for the buck. The tradeoff is capacity -- flash memory players simply can't store as many songs as some of the pricier units. One such flash memory player is the Encross ORC-300. At a mere 2.8 by 1.5 by .5 inches (including battery), the ORC-300 isn't much larger than a cigarette lighter and slips conveniently into even the smallest pocket. The unit supports three of today's most popular music file formats -- WMA, MP3 and ADPCM -- with up to ten hours of playing time (depending on the format you choose).

But the ORC-300 is much more than an MP3/WMA/ADPCM player. With just a couple of button presses, it's an FM tuner too. Or an FM recorder. You can even record your own voice via its integrated microphone. Other amenities include a handy tempo function adjustment and a graphic LCD with a bright indigo blue LED backlight and three full lines of helpful text-based information.

The ORC-300 connects to your computer for uploading via a common USB port and delivers up to 12 hours of continuous playback before its single AAA battery needs to be replaced or recharged.
