Amazon.com Product Description

Want all the best phone features without breaking the bank? The Samsung SCH-a870 is just the ticket. This stylish handset boasts Bluetooth, advanced speech recognition, a camera, and a speakerphone. All in all, this phone is a great companion for anyone with a busy, on-the-go lifestyle.

Design
The phone features a traditional clamshell design with a vibrant 128 x 160 pixel color display with 262,000 colors. A supplementary full-color 96 x 96 external screen displays call information, signal strength, and more. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. The a870 has no external antenna, so there's nothing to snag in your pants pocket. There's a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets, while an integrated VGA camera with a flash is housed on the front cover of the phone.
Calling Features
The a870's built-in address book can store up to 500 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. Speaker-independent voice recognition allows you to make calls and access other essential features, all without ever touching the device. Meanwhile, a built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Plus, picture ID functionality lets you assign photos or other images to callers. And because the a870 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation. A flight mode allows you to shut off the phone's calling functions so you can play games or use the a870's organizer functions.
The a870's GPS location technology pinpoints your location when you dial 911. Perhaps most importantly for users in rural areas, the a870 is a tri-mode phone, meaning it can operate on Verizon's digital networks, as well as analog networks that serve many outlying areas.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The a870 covers the messaging basics with support for sending and receiving text, pictures and sound. The phone also supports mobile instant messaging. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit -- a plus for mobile text messaging users. Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the a870, as well. Verizon's optional Mobile Web 2.0 package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can also trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater.
The a870 includes a personal organizer that includes a calendar, alarm clock, and calculator. You can also use the phone's Bluetooth capability to establish a link with your laptop or PC for data sharing and Internet connectivity. Also included with the a870 is Verizon's VG Navigator software, which allows you to get real-time, turn-by-turn audible directions as you're driving.

Imaging and Entertainment
The fun really starts with the a870's built-in VGA (640x480) camera and flash, which features a self-timer and white balance adjustment. And if you want to make your a870 reflect your personality, it features customizable theme colors, screen backgrounds, fonts and caller ID graphics and pictures. Gaming is supported, too.
Vital Statistics
The Samsung SCH-a870 weighs 3.40 ounces and measures 3.6 x 1.80 x 0.85 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.3 hours of digital talk time, and up to 170 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the AMPS 850/CDMA 850/CDMA 1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Note: The a870 supports the Wireless Headset, Handsfree, Serial Port, Dial Up Networking Profiles. It does not support Bluetooth Object Transfer (OBEX) Profiles.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Phone.......2007-06-10

I got this phone back in December and haven't ran into any problems at all with it.
I use the VZ Navigator tool a few times a week and won't be purchasing any new phone without navigation built in.
Good sounds quality, good for it's price, over all a solid phone that gets its job done.

4 out of 5 stars So far so good.......2007-05-18

Had it for 8 months, so far so good.
I liked the sound quality, battery life is good, someone mentioned rubber cap for the charger but mine is a plastic cap and it was easy to pull out.
The camera quality is low and the flashlight is a joke, the software needs some improvment as well, they should make the arrow keys programable at least. However at this price, you can't really blame anything, after all this is a decent phone for everyday use, you shoudn't expect anything fancy from it.

4 out of 5 stars fine for what it is.......2007-02-28

It's an obsolete model now, but that's why I just got it: that's the "sweet spot" for price/features value for electronics. LetsTalk paid me $50 to take it! Reception is good and the keypad is fine, it's a solid phone. It was one of the first camera phones so of course it's not as good as the newer ones, but it's also one of the last phones to have analog reception, which is still in use in rural areas and likely will be for at least another year or two. (If you're really way out in the boonies you may want to get one of the 900 series phones which have a jack for attaching an external antenna). In another two years Verizon will give me a new phone to re-up, and then I'll get one of the current models that will then be obsolete because it "only" has a 2MP camera and 1GB MP3 player, when the new phones have PS2 games and Gigabit ethernet, blah, blah...

1 out of 5 stars NOT Recommended!.......2007-02-16

I chose the Samsung A870 because it appeared to be an updated version of the Samsung I'd been happily using for the past two years. Big mistake.

THE POSITIVES: the A870 has a lot of neat features and they all work. The features are outlined elsewhere so I won't bore you here, but the phone does what it's supposed to do.

THE NEGATIVES: the phone has lousy battery life. Even if it remains in standby mode with no incoming or outgoing calls, the phone must go on the charger every night or the battery goes dead the following day. This is especially inconvenient when traveling.

Even worse, often times the phone doesn't ring. These unanswered calls go to voicemail resulting in yet another problem: only about half of all voicemails are saved. I have no clue where these phantom voicemail messages go - to the great wireless beyond perhaps? It is now standard procedure for callers familiar with my pitiful cell phone to leave a message on my mobile, and then assuming I won't receive that message, to turn around and call my land line. There is no way to determine how many messages I've missed over the six months I've had this phone. It's not something I like to think about.

We have tried to test the phone, but because the problems are intermittent, we've been unable to pin down a cause. We do know that it is an issue with the phone itself and not the service. My spouse chose an LG phone at the same time as I selected the Samsung for our shared service and he has experienced no problems.

2 out of 5 stars Fair Reception poor dialing.......2007-01-27

I like the feel and size of the phone. Battery life has not been fantastic but acceptable. I often seem to get echo in my connections. Most troubling thing though is that when dialing a number I never am able to actually dial without having to correct it several times. For example I hit a 2 and I get 12 or 21 instead. The keypad is just plain awful. Very frustrating when so much effort is needed just to dial a simple number. Never experienced anything like this before, this is my 7th phone give or take and by far most disappointing. My previous Samsung was very good. I do like the speaker phone and camera works alright.
