Amazon.com Product Description
Images and music combine in this easy-to-use portable digital audio player. Toshiba's snazzy, dark-grey Gigabeat MEG-F60S packs a 1.8-inch Toshiba hard drive capable of holding an incredible 60 GB of digital media: MP3 and WMA compressed audio and even uncompressed, full-resolution WAV files. That's about 15,000 songs (more than 1,000 complete albums) at 128 kbps MP3, a crazy 30,000 songs at 64 kbps WMA, and a still-impressive 1,700 songs or 114 hours of CD-resolution WAV files.
A major feature of the player is its bright, crystal-clear, 2.2-inch LCD with 240 x 320 resolution and the ability to render over 65,000 colors. It's there so you can experience the visual as well as the aural component of your entertainment. The Gigabeat lets you download and view album covers, search for your favorite tracks by scrolling through those album covers, or even set a favorite album cover as your background image. You can download any digital still picture from your PC and create custom slideshows, too--and set them to music.
Gigabeat may be versatile, but it's also easy to operate. Its PlusTouch sensor control lets you scroll through its intuitive menus using only a soft touch or pass of your fingertip.
The PC-only Gigabeat is "Plays for Sure"-certified by Microsoft, which means that it will operate with any "Plays for Sure" download site or management software when connected to your PC. Gigabeat is automatically recognized by Windows Media Player 10, so there's no need to install new drivers of any kind. Toshiba has also partnered with Napster to provide Napster's "Napster To Go" software, giving you the option of using Napster To Go, Windows Media Player, and/or the supplied Gigabeat Room management software (Gigabeat Room is required for transfer of photo images).
So what about your CD collection? After all, you'll likely be able to stash the entire thing in here, one way or another. Thanks to a unique feature called CD RipRec, all you have to do is place a CD in your PC and press the CD RipRec button while the Gigabeat is docked in its cradle. CD RipRec will launch the software and transfer compressed audio to your Gigabeat quickly and with no further effort on your part. Using a USB 2.0 connection (cable supplied), CD RipRec can transfer the contents of an entire CD to the Gigabeat in as little as 5 minutes.
If Gigabeat's battery life (up to 16 hours) isn't enough to satisfy your entertainment needs, fret not. Rather than carrying your AC adapter everywhere, simply connect the Gigabeat to any PC with a USB cable and the battery will charge itself again.
Other features include headphones with an integrated wired remote control, a choice of 10- or 60-second intro scan to help you find a desired song, multilingual support (Japanese, English, French, Chinese, Spanish, and German), and 28 user selectable equalizer settings, and SRS WOW, which simulates surround sound from any two speakers (including headphones).
What's in the Box
Digital music player, an AC power adapter, a power-supply, a docking cradle, a USB cable, headphones with integrated remote control, a software CD-ROM (Gigabeat Room management software, CD RipRec, Napster To Go), a user's manual, and warranty information.

Satisfy your multimedia and gaming needs wherever you roam with the thin, light Toshiba Satellite P105-S6104 laptop. It runs the powerful Windows XP Media Center operating system, which offers a wide assortment of features to make it easy to create and manage digital photos, videos, and music. It's also great for using as an entertainment center, with Toshiba's unique Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. You'll enjoy fantastic DVD viewing as well as immersive gaming graphics thanks to the 17-inch TruBrite display.
It's powered by Intel's powerful Core 2 Duo processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. The dual-execution core T5200 Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, and it features a 1.6 GHz speed, fast 533 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache. This laptop also features a 120 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed DDR2 RAM (4 GB maximum), tri-mode 802.11a/b/g wireless connectivity, Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 128 MB of shared video memory, and multi-format memory card reader. This is a Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready.
The Basics

Hard Drive: The 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is above average in size for notebook PCs, and it's befitting of such an entertainment-centric PC. It offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a good-sized digital audio library.
Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 processor has a 1.6 GHz processor speed, fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a good start for power users, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add up to 4 GB of RAM for worry-free handling graphics-intensive presentations and multiple open business productivity applications.
CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 3x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous). With Toshiba's unique Express Media Player, you can won't have to wait for Windows to boot up before you can start a DVD movie or CD. Just a simple press of the button bypasses the system and starts your media playing.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
This laptop has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It offers both VGA and S-Video output connections for connecting to monitors and TVs.
You'll enjoy crisp sound via the built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers, which can produce immersive SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound with SRS WOW sound enhancement. This notebook also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
Offering easy connectivity, this notebook comes with an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN, which is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (in addition to a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
1 VGA monitor port
1 S-Video out
1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television with the included remote and record and pause programs (much like a DVR--or digital video recorder--such as Tivo or ReplayTV). It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee Internet Security Suite and VirusScan (with 30-day trials), InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, and Sonic Solutions RecordNow.
Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 15.5 x 10.8 x 1.65 inches and weighs 7.1 pounds.
Power
It's powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery (4000 mAh), which has a battery life of up to 2.25 hours (depending on usage). It has a recharge time of approximately 4 hours.
What's in the Box
This package contains the P105-S6104 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Laptops Forever!.......2007-04-02
This is my first laptop. I have been using desktops for 20 yrs and only got a laptop because I am planning a lot of travel and need it for multimedia presentatons on the road.
The S6104 is the ultimate in plug'n'play capability. Swift and smooth and sleek. It's not the lightest in the world but if you're looking for a portable version of a desktop with all the bells and whistles, it's definitely the way to go.
It immediately recognizes virtually everything I hook up to it and gets me on my way and makes me smile. I have to keep myself from hugging it. It's a powerful sucker and has exceeded every one of my expectations. If I were to dig really really hard for a complaint, it would probably be that there is no 1394 firewire connection and I wish the AC adaptor didn't have the heavy power connector in the middle but it's standard on any high power portable.
From now on I will only get laptops and only Toshiba. I am very very happy.
Oh ... BTW ... Kitty loves it even more than me ... I got a laptop computer and she got a big screen TV. She tucks herself under my arm as I type away; she especially loves the aquarium screensaver. Looks like we all made out on this deal!
terrible glare and eye strain.......2006-12-27
I just got this for xmas. There's much to like but the glare on the screen is awful. This machine replaced a Sony Vaio which had no glare at all. After only a little use I feel a lot of eye strain. I hope I'm able to adjust to the glare or I won't be comfortable using this for any length of time. I like the feel of the keys and that the keyboard is wider with the number pad. The case exterior is really pretty. Although it's larger than my Sony, it's not as heavy. I haven't tried the battery life. I hope it's not as bad as others have indicated. For now, if it weren't for the glare, I'd be happy.
Great, but annoying hard drive issues........2006-12-21
I bought this as a special the day after Thanksgiving. Great laptop so far, I love the TV Tuner that came with it, but it does have a few issues.
1. Way too much crap loaded on the system when you boot it up. I guess that's to be expected from a pre-built system though, and it only took me a couple of hours to remove most everything I didn't want and get it running a bit leaner and meaner.
2. The placement of the USB ports on this thing could have been a little better placed, as well as the audio ports. Two USB ports on the side of the machine are very close to the optical drive, which means you need to route cables to the back or the other side if you're going to be burning a lot of discs (which I frequently do). The audio ports are also all in the front, which doesn't make much sense for something the size of a desktop replacement laptop. I would have liked to have them in the back, or at least on the side, like my old Satellite.
3. The hard drive. It's a great size, and sufficiently fast. The only thing that worries me is the sounds it makes. The read/write heads sound like they are trying to park themselves once every 6sec or so when the drive is idle. After having hard drives crash in the past, that's not a sound that makes me confortable. I contacted Toshiba customer service, and the tech concluded that there was nothing he could he, after about 15mins of talking, and gave me the address of an authorized Toshiba service provider. The visit is supposed to be covered under warranty, but I haven't taken it in yet to see, so I can't say for sure.
Other than those issues, this thing is great. It encodes movies blindingly fast compared to my old P4, and even if it's a lower-end core 2 duo processor, it still does a fine job. I've played Prey on this machine and it does a decent job, nothing to write home about, but not bad for a laptop this price.
Much lacking from it's souped older brother, but still a great desktop replacement.......2006-11-04
OVERVIEW: This is Toshiba's answer to Dell's E1705, and at about the same price range, offers many of the same utilities. However, unlike it's more powerful older brother, the Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722, which is a monster laptop, this seems to fall into the darkest parts of its shadow. Here's why.
GOOD:
-1GB of RAM
-Massive 120GB hard drive
-Quiet running
-DVD+/-RW Drive (plus DL - 8.5GB disk compatible)
-Beautiful screen (with anti-glare)
-Wi-Fi
-Lots of programable media buttons
-Speakers are very nice for the price
-Affordable
BAD:
-Slowest Core 2 Duo Processor - Dell doesn't even offer the T5200, which runs at 1.6GHz. The slowest Core 2 Duo Dell offers is the 1.83GHz T5600, which runs much faster benchmarks. The Core 2 Duo is new technology, so the 1.6GHz is faster than the original Core Duo's, but still disappointing on a laptop of this size and price.
-INTEGRATED GRAPHICS MEDIA ACCELERATOR!!: Again with the GMA. Quit it. Make something new. This is DEAD technology, and my biggest pet peive in laptops that have everything else going for it. GMAs are not Vista Premium compatible. You can not play games, handle demanding 3D applications, successfully photo-edit, render, or video-edit without lag. Sharpness is moderately effected, and your system RAM is sacrificed due to the sharing of virtual RAM. Once computers go through their major leap, which hopefully won't be TOO long, no computer will have integrated graphics, but just because of this graphics card, this item must lose a star.
-No Webcam or Bluetooth - Not important, just disappointed they're not offered.
-Wasted space - There could be more ports on here. I do like the large amount of USB ports, but everything else is just standard. For all the real estate offered in a 17" laptop, you'd think there'd be more here offered.
-Battery life - Awful. But with a computer this size, you probably won't be carrying it with you to a lot of places.
BOTTOM LINE: This is the laptop for the causal PC user. For those people that don't want to meddle with the tiny laptops, or hastle with all the gadgets and doodads other PCs offer, this mobile unit will suffice the needs. With a bright screen, nice keyboard, decent track pad, and a good balance of speed and memory, this computer will last until the computer evolution arrives.
minus the crapware, this is a great laptop.......2006-10-17
I bought this laptop because I had to replace the one I had to turn back in to my client.
I didn't need anything top of the line, but wanted one that was better than the one I previously used. Believe it or not this is the first laptop I bought with my own money in over 7 years. The first one I bought was an open box Compaq that died on me in only 4 months, so it was returned. I had a couple supplied by my past and current employers and they were also Compaq/HP, I had a little more luck with them, but they too started having problems. One had the motherboard fail and the past one I had the battery died after 6 months of use.
I decided I was in need for change. I definitely did not want to go back to HP/Compaq and I considered the Sony Vaio that was around the same price as this. From past experience I know that Sony was very proprietary with their products. Also, comparing specs for the price I decided that I got more for my money going with this Toshiba Satellite line. The Vaios definitely looks better but to me performance comes first then looks.
For the most part, I like the way this laptop looks. The screen is huge and bright. The keyboard has all the keys as a full size keyboard so that means it has a separate num pad like regular keyboards do. I don't use the numpad that much, but when I do need to type numbers, its much better than using the numbers at the top of the keyboard. One thing I do not like about the keyboard is due to the fact the keyboard does have all the keys of a standard keyboard, the right shift key is TINY!! I am used to using a bigger shift key so when I attempt to type capital letters, I frequently end up typing '/' instead.
The mouse pad is also off center due to the bigger keyboard and that threw me off for a while, but now I'm used to it.
One thing I do not like about the laptop appearance is the glossy back. It feels good to the touch, but the glossiness makes it VERY easy to scratch. In fact I only had the laptop for a few hours and after I took it out of my laptop bag scratches were already all over it. The inside of the laptop is also glossy which is fine, and I do like the silver color.
The computer comes with Windows XP media Center edition, and as expected as soon as I booted the computer up for the first time, it was loaded with crapware. Also when starting windows for the first time, it FORCES you to install MacAfee Security Center; something I have no desire in using as I already have my own firewall and antivirus software which I am perfectly happy with. In addition to MacAfee AOL is preloaded (yuck) in addition to tons of free trials, useless software and pointless utilities. I checked how many processes were running on first start up and I discovered it was over 60! Right out of the box 60 processes are running in the background!! VERY unnecessary. I wiped the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of windows XP, but had a lot of issues installing all the device drivers that were on the Toshiba restore disks, so I restored the hard drive image to it original out of box state and then just removed all the [...] one by one, starting with AOL. After it uninstalls, MacAfee it leaves [...] in your registry which will cause a MacAfee process to continue to run the background. I removed that by following the instructions at this website: [...]
The removal of all the crapware took a good hour, but that in addition to removing processes from msconfig, now I am down to 39 processes running. Not great, but definitely better than the more that 60 that it original was.
The laptop itself is a pretty good machine. It comes with wireless ethernet, DVD-RW, 4 USB ports, VGA out, ethernet and modem ports and two PCMIA card slots. Also included are harman kardon speakers, but I haven't really listened to them yet.
It much faster than my other laptop and I haven't had any problems with it locking up unexpectedly. The 120 GB hard drive is 3 times bigger and the 1 GB of RAM is 4 times more than my past laptop. The battery seems to hold its charge for a while. All of this is a big upgrade from my past laptop for not that much more money. I considered getting the model right above this (P105-S6114) which had 2GB RAM, 160 GB hard drive and a finger print scanner, but decided that this would be all I really needed since the processors on the two are identical. In addition, I didn't want to spend too much over $1000 for this laptop. I may consider getting the P105-S6114 in addition to this one, but that is down the road. This laptop will be able to serve my needs for long time, and with it being upgradeable the only thing I'm really missing out on is the fingerprint scanner, which is cool, but something I really don't need.
Overall I am pleased with this laptop. It was a headache getting rid of the preinstalled unwanted software, but other than that I don't have any major issues with it. I won't be going back to HP/Compaq and only time will tell if I will continue to buy Toshibas, but so far so good.
