5 out of 5 stars Lots of space for lots of data.......2007-04-29

The HP Media Vault has a fan that runs all the time, so I can hear it in a quiet room, but overall it makes very little noise. With the drive set to spin down when not used, it makes it a little quieter (and saves electricity). It has two green status lights on the front that are very bright, making big circles of light on the opposite wall when the room is otherwise dark. It seems to be plenty quick for storing files, and allowing access to read them back. I didn't install the software it came with, I was able to configure it with a web browser and use it as a network drive without putting anything new on the computers I use it from.

5 out of 5 stars Best Network Attached Storage on the Market for Home Networks.......2007-04-07

I really read lots of reviews on newegg, Amazon, Tiger-Direct, etc. There is alot of NAS out there so there is much to choose from. I know that I paid a little more for this solution than lets say the Buffalo Linkstation; but I think I made the best choice. Setup is easy; the software worked right without alot of tinkering; by wife and I have automatic backup of all important files on our laptpos without manually keying anything. And to boot, if you go to one of the pages of their tech people, you can access your files over the internet. It takes a little work, but I am able to do it. That makes this a great purchase...backup storage for three computers, 1.2TB of storage, and access from remote locations.

5 out of 5 stars HP Media Vault Works Well for Backup Storage.......2007-04-02

I have owned and used the HP MV2020 for approximately 30-days now and have had a very good experience with the device. I do not use the device for media streaming or print spooling - just as a data backup device.

I purchased a Samsung 500 Gb drive as a second drive and am mirroring the two drives for added security. If you plan to add a second drive, be certain to check the HP webisite to look for potententially incompatible drives - apparently not all hard drives are created equal.

Installing the second drive was a breeze and the setup of the mirror was only mildly painful - read the directions carefully. The mirroring of roughly 196 Mb took several hours - plan on overnight.

The backup software is pretty good. I have set mine up to backup My Documents, the Desktop and Outlook files on two different computers whenever changes are made. My only complaint with the backup software is that if you save a file to your desktop and then move it to My Documents, you wind up with two copies in your backup drive(s). I suppose some quarterly My Desktop cleanup will resolve this problem.

Overall, a well engineered, solid product with good instructions that does what it's advertised to do - worthy of the HP (of old) name.

5 out of 5 stars This HP 500 GB device is the BOMB!!!!!!!.......2007-03-31

It was easy to set up, that is all I have to say. We'll be getting plenty of use out of it for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for System Disk Restore - FInd out what network adapter you have and ask HP if they support it!!!.......2006-12-17

Works great until you try to use it for a system disk restore with their PC restore disk. On a new Core 2 system the restore disk couldn't understand the network adapter. Something special about an Intel Core 2 system running latest XP media edition? Don't think so. PC Restore disk is a junker that doesn't work. HP Online chat first said to connect MV with the computer thru a male/male USB port. Didn't work. Then they said buy an external network adapter. That didn't work either. Now they said try it in another computer, maybe that one will work! Maybe it's worth it to risk pulling out and/or adding disk drives out of yet another computer to try to get the Media Vault to do its job.

If you're going to buy this junker for features other than the disk restore, as I had a disk status flag go bad and have to replace the hard drive with it's warranteed replacement and use the disk restore, then maybe it's a nice product - runs at about 2-3MB/sec from my 10k raptor. After spending over 1 day backing up/validating a 100GB disk image and then 1/2 day discovering the PC Restore Disk doesn't work, I wish I had tried another solution; the cost in my time is now greater than the cost of the MV. I'm going to reinstall the OS and every app on it because the MV restore doesn't work on new computers. Why don't they warn users what network adapters (and hence PCs) the restore disk can and can't handle - this was my suggestion to HP support. My PC is new but standard.
