It offers a cool, modern look with a durable, high-gloss piano black finish and inlaid design inspired by Zen rock gardens as well as a subtle blue backlit media control panel that responds to the slightest touch. It also has an integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam, enabling easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats.
You can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. It also includes LightScribe technology for personalized silkscreen-quality, laser-etched CD/DVD labels created right in the drive. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the included remote control, which stores conveniently in the ExpressCard slot. Easily share digital photos with the included HP Photosmart Premiere software.
Optimized for mobile performance, this notebook is powered by the 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 dual-core processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and higher throughput for simultaneous computing tasks. Other hardware features include a 100 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 video/graphics card with up to 128 MB of shared video RAM, 54G Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g), a wide variety of connectivity options, multi-format memory card reader, and Windows XP Media Center edition operating system. This is a Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready.
The Basics

Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs, and it's befitting of such an entertainment-centric PC. It offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a good-sized digital audio library. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
Processor: The 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 256 KB L2 cache (for a 512 KB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM will get you going, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 graphics/video card with up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card and built-in Altec Lansing speakers.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire:

4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
1 VGA monitor port
1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
2 headphone jacks, 1 with SPDIF digital audio capability
1 microphone jack
1 Expansion Port 3 connector
1 IR receiver
5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. The HP Photosmart Premier photo and imaging software makes digital photography fast and easy by helping you organize, edit, protect, and share your digital pictures and video clips. Sonic's DigitalMedia Plus makes it easy and intuitive to back up your pictures, videos, and music onto DVD-R/+R media for safekeeping. It also comes with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), PC Recovery, MSN Encarta Plus, Microsoft Money, Muvee AutoProducer, and RealRhapsody.

Customer Reviews:
HP & AMD A WINNING HIGH TECH COMBINATION.......2007-06-03
An overwhelming laptop experience with fluid processing speed, fast internet navigation and downloading and last but not least splendid images and graphics. AMD's Turion makes all the difference!!
99% Satisfied - it doesn't get much better than this!.......2007-01-16
Having never owned a laptop before, I was quite nervous about making this purchase just a few weeks ago. I don't have a lot of knowledge of what to look for, but was amazed at the many features that this model offered. Its wide, 17-inch screen is optimal for gaming and watching movies, and the graphics card can handle almost everything thrown its way. This computer is fast enough to take care of the average user, too.
Features I enjoy include:
* Built-in webcam and mic - something I believe all laptops will have soon
* Numeric keypad beside the qwerty keyboard - makes life easy when entering a lot of numbers.
* Lightscribe - allows for direct disc labeling
* Mousepad on/off switch - no worries about hands dragging on it accidentally anymore
* Scrollbar on mousepad - makes for faster webpage navigation
I actually enjoy the mousepad more than previous reviewers - I do not have any problems with sticky fingers, I suppose! Also, the buttons under the mousepad have a great feel to them as well. There are loads of features (some standard, some exceeding competitors) that I have not mentioned because I have not yet benefited from them.
Overall, this is an excellent machine! I do agree with the reviewer who said it would be nice if one or two of the 4 USB ports were in the back, rather than having them all on the sides. But if that is the lone complaint on such a reasonably-priced machine, HP is doing quite well for themselves. If you're looking for a laptop and don't mind one that's a little bigger and heavier than some of the compact models out there, then this one is for you!
Great for gaming and college.......2006-11-15
I love this laptop: it's the best out of the 4 I've owned. I've had it on for 10 hours now, wearing thin cotton pajama pants, and can barely feel any heat from it: a huge improvement over the red burned splotches from the other laptops I've owned! So far Ive played World of Warcraft on it, which runs in max resolution with all graphics settings on max, smooth as can be: not even my desktop does that. It also plays Titan Quest, though I have better results turning down the graphics settings on that one (it's a real graphics hog).
The finish is very durable, though the black gloss finish does show fingerprints easily. The keyboard is instinctive (unlike the weird ones on the Toshibas), and the widescreen build means they were able to include a 10-key pad to the right of the keyboard, just like on a desktop. The weight isn't bad: it's lighter than the ones we bought 4 years ago, so it feels light to me. I carry this to school without a problem, but if you're looking for something ultra-lightweight for frequent travel, you may want a smaller laptop.
The only complaints I have are.....the touchpad has a very sticky surface, so if you don't plan to use a mouse, you may want to try this one out in the store before purchasing. Second of all, there's a real cockroach of a program included on it called Vongo: when I uninstalled it, it caused errors and I had to go back to a system checkpoint (I've since decided to just leave it, and all HPs are going to come with these programs). Finally, just a tiny thing, I wish that one of the USBs was on the back, instead of on the sides: I just prefer to plug my mouse in the back.
Overall, we're extremely happy with this computer. We got a lot of bang for the buck, getting a laptop that I can use for college AND play games on. I'm told that the Intel Duos are the fastest processors, but for gaming I prefer AMD, and any processor will run my college programs. For around $1000, we're very impressed, and are once again pleased with HP!
Two flaws.......2006-11-11
Poor selection of the material used to make the touchpad -- it makes my finger stick to it. I have an old Toshiba that doesn't have this problem. New Toshibas are also good in this regard. If I preferred to use a mouse, I'd buy this notebook.
Also, the video picture made by its web cam pauses often. This isn't supposed to happen. This didn't happen even on another HP's model with an Intel processor (~ $1500).
If these flaws don't bother you, I'd recommend it.
Performing well, great screen.......2006-11-07
I've had this product for a week and am looking to order a second one for my wife. This unit works very well as a desktop replacement, but we'll be keeping our smaller laptops for traveling because this HP is a monster. Battery life is only around 1.5 hours under moderate use, so stay near an outlet.
The only issue I've had is one "blue screen of death" and one instance where the monitor would not turn back on after the power saver system had shut it down. Both of these issues occurred while the included Sonic MyDVD software was trying to burn a disc, so I'm avoiding that software now and have had no further issues.
