Amazon.com Product Description

The HP Pavilion a1640n comes loaded with the all tools you need to easily create, manage, share, and enjoy your digital photos, home videos, movies, and music. It features a wide range of connectivity options for all your peripherals and preloaded HP Photosmart Premier digital image editing and management software. And you can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc and provides a super-fast 16x DVD+R/-R write speed (as well as 12x DVD-RAM burning). It also includes LightScribe technology for personalized silkscreen-quality, laser-etched CD/DVD labels created right in the drive.

This desktop is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. The dual-execution core E6300 Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, and it features a 1.86 GHz speed, an amazing 1066 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache.

Store more music, videos, and data on the roomy 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive, which offers fast transfer rates. it also comes loaded with 2 GB of RAM (which can be bumped up to an enormous 8 GB), an integrated Intel GMA 950 video/graphics card with up to 224 MB of shared video RAM, a wide variety of connection ports on both the front and rear of the box, a 9-in-1 memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats, Windows Media Center 2005 operating system, and a wide assortment of pre-loaded software. This is a Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready.

The Basics

• Hard Drive: The extra-large 250 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
• Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 processor has a 1.86 GHz processor speed, amazing 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

• Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
• Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
• Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
• Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

• Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (PC4200, 2 x 512 MB, 533 MHz) is a very good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and gaming software. Its 400 MHz speed is a little slower than comparable multimedia desktops, but does add to this package's affordability. This desktop has a whopping 8 GB maximum RAM capacity (8 x 1 GB), which is a bit small in comparison to other multimedia desktops in this HP lineup.
• CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, this multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 8x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, and 32x CD-RW write speeds. It also offers 16x DVD-ROM and 40x CD-ROM read speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

• Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Graphics and Sound
Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 224 MB of shared video memory. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers and is compatible with Dolby Pro Logic II.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, this desktop has three PCI slots (two available), one PCI Express slot (available), two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (occupied), and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

• 6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 4 in rear)
• 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
• 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
• 1 VGA monitor port
• 2 headphone and 2 microphone (front and rear)
• 2 line-in (front and rear)
• Coaxial digital audio (SPDIF) output for connecting to surround sound home theater receiver

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (Update Rollup 2) is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. The Update Rollup 2 upgrade offers support for the Windows Media Center Extender technology built into XBox 360 game consoles, which lets you access entertainment from your Media Center PC--whether it's live and recorded TV and movies, music, photos or Online Spotlight--on any TV in the house.

The HP Photosmart Premier photo and imaging software makes digital photography fast and easy by helping you organize, edit, protect, and share your digital pictures and video clips. Sonic's DigitalMedia Plus makes it easy and intuitive to back up your pictures, videos, and music onto DVD-R/+R media for safekeeping. 5 out of 5 stars Great computer for the money.......2007-01-19

Even though I built my last 8 computers from parts and/or bare-bones units, I purchased the HP Pavilion a1640n with the HP w22 widescreen monitor and am quite satisfied. This is definitely a computer you can expand with as your needs demand, but as-is, it provides a solid working platform to grow from. The base system, as configured, lacks a TV tuner. What's somewhat strange to me is while HP recommends only adding an external TV tuner, other related HP models have an internal TV tuner. HP's website does provide some guidance when adding a Hauppauge internal TV tuner so it may be that HP just wants to keep our hands out of the computer, unless absolutely necessary.

The internet access offers and the trial software are somewhat of an annoyance, but they aren't robbing the system resources and can be easily removed. Symantec's System Works free trial came in handy because I was still awaiting delivery of the newest firewall version from Zone Labs. I do miss not having a full operating system disk set, but a friend of mine hasn't had any problems restoring his system with the recovery disk set he got with his computer.

1 out of 5 stars No drivers AT ALL - you are on your own.......2006-12-18

HP does not provide ANY drivers for this machine. Avoid at all costs unless you like pain.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of crap installed; XP Home Media Center creates problems; no HP says no warranty with clean install of XP Pro.......2006-12-12

There is a lot of crap (various software trials) that are difficult to purge from this pre-loaded computer.

HP phone support told me that they don't want buyers putting XP Pro (clean install) onto the machine. In fact, it voids the warranty. Further, HP doesn't provide drivers for Ethernet and other hardware - practically nothing is available on the downloads portion of their website for this machine.

XP Media Center doesn't work with Palm Pilots.

(By the way, if you want to do a clean install anyway, to avoid the blue Stop screen, first change the file structure to IDE.)

5 out of 5 stars It looks good after having seen a Gateway.......2006-12-08

Ok, it's been only a few days now. And so far so good. After my experience with a Gateway computer, it feels like heaven. There are a few annoying aspects but nothing to fret over. So it gets 5-stars.

Here are the negatives:
1. IMMEDIATELY USE ITS DISK IMAGE CREATOR UTILITY TO BACKUP THE SYSTEM. Looks like HP had given too much money to Carly Fiorentina to afford to give backup DVDs to their customers. WARNING: the system allows you to create disk image ONLY ONCE.

2. You MUST use DVD+R and nothing else to backup your system. This is a regular DVD on steroids, but for some reason the backup tool doesn't seem to work with any other format.

3. UGLY MOUSE! It still has its ball! Some balls HP has sending their customers last-century's junk.

4. Pre-Installed CRAP!

OK, that's it. Everything else appears to be working. If later it doesn't I'll update this review.

Although there are a few innocuous matters, the price more than compensates for the machine's shortcomings.

Best Regards.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent PC for the money.......2006-11-25

I got tired of building PCs and having questionable driver support. I play games and am generally an enthusiast. This is an excellent default configuration, with the exception of the graphics chipset. Good hard disk, excellent RAM, and the fabulous Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.

I generally live off my laptop (a MacBook) and am a UNIX administrator, professionally.

All you need to do is buy a GeForce 7900 or 7950 graphics card ($200-300) and you have an excellent OEM gaming rig.

In my case, I got this computer with a 17" monitor for about $849 + Tax (thanks black friday). $850 for just this computer is still not a bad deal, but without a monitor combo it has much less appeal at the price and makes building a computer slightly more appealing.

If you're a home user that needs a *good* computer but has no intention of playing games, you are getting something quite nice with this computer. It's future-proof and very well built. It will handle anything you throw at it, except intensive games. Basic children's games will be no problem at all.

But if you want to do hardcore games, definitely go with the graphics card above. Even a $70 card will give you a lot of headroom for slightly older games.
