Designed to be Super-slim and sophisticated, the Samsung t629 slides open to reveal an impressive array of features that include a 1.3 megapixel camera, a high-resolution screen, an MP3 player, and Bluetooth connectivity. <small><b>A slider with substance. See an interactive demo (requires Flash).</b> <small></td></tr></table> <B>Design</B>
The t629's sliding design hides the phone's number pad under the display until you need to make a call. The large, 176 x 220 pixel display supports up to 262,000 colors--plenty of resolution and color depth for your videos and photos. A five-way center control button is positioned below the display, as are shortcut and selection keys. Other design features include the phone's 1.3 megapixel camera, which is housed on the top-rear portion of the phone, while the USB data and charging ports are located on the phone's bottom edge. There's also a microSD slot on the right side of the phone.
<B>Calling Features</B>
With 21 MB of internal memory, and a memory card slot, the t629 is designed to hold all the contacts, phone numbers and addresses you can throw at it. A call list remembers your most recent missed, received, and dialed calls, and in addition to a vibrating alert, the t629 supports polyphonic ringtones and MP3-based music ringtones. You can also download additional MP3 music ringtones from T-Mobile's t-zones service. A speakerphone lets you talk hands-free while you're doing other things, and the picture caller ID function lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. Meanwhile, voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family, and associates as easy as saying their names.
Like all T-Mobile phones, the t629 also supports voicemail, caller ID, conference calling, call forwarding, call waiting, call hold, built-in paging, and access to T-Mobile's 411 service. This phone is fully compatible with T-Mobile's My Faves service, which allows you to call up to five of your most common contacts--on any network--without using any of your minutes. Learn more about My Faves. Lastly, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.
<B>Messaging, Internet, and Tools</B>
The t629 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics, and sound via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. Messaging clients for AOL, Yahoo!, and ICQ are included.
<table align=right width=250 cellpadding=10> <tr> <td> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/wireless/detail-page/t629tmo-2.jpg" border=0 align=top>
<small><b>Thin, stylish, powerful. What more do you need?</b> <small></td></tr></table> Getting on the Internet is easy with the t629, too. It supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the new, high speed EDGE data protocol. When used with a T-Mobile data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. There's also a built-in browser for t-zones downloads and mobile Web browsing. T-Mobile's t-zones service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile text messaging users.
A number of handy productivity tools are bundled with the t629 including a voice memo recorder, an alarm clock, a calculator, a calendar, and a to-do list.
<B>Imaging and Entertainment</B>
The t629's built-in 1.3 megapixel camera captures stills and video to the phone's internal memory, or to an optional microSD memory card. Meanwhile, the phone's powerful still camera sports a 4X digital zoom, a self-timer, and other real-camera features. Taking great pictures is a snap with the Samsung t629.
Into music? You're in luck with the t629. Store your favorite MP3-based music on the t629 and listen whenever the feeling strikes you. Simply upload the songs from your PC via the phone's USB interface (the phone supports USB mass storage mode), then organize and play your songs with the t629's music management software. Lastly, if you want to dress up the t629, picture effects, custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be set to fit your personality.
Java support is built into the t629, making it a powerful gaming companion. Games are downloadable via the t-zones service or you can use the handset's USB data connection to load more games and files onto the phone. The t629 also sports a flight mode feature, which allows the user to safely use the non-wireless functions of a phone (such as music, games or organizer functions) on an airplane during flight.
<B>Vital Statistics</B>
The Samsung SGH-t629 weighs 3.20 ounces and measures 3.90 x 2.01 x 0.55 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 200 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Vexing and incommodious.......2007-06-11
I've only owned a handful of cellphones in my life, but this one is one of the worst. First of all I'm awakened during the night every couple of weeks by the low battery warning, which continues to beep every five minutes, forcing me to get up and plug it in. Otherwise when I use it for an hour a day, it requires charging every two days. And unlike my previous phone, it doesn't charge via the USB cable, but must be plugged in to the wall, so I can't download photos and charge at the same time.
Signal strength is terrible. We live a quarter mile from a hill and upstairs we get only one bar, while downstairs we often have no signal. Calls made inside the house are often dropped. I never experienced no-signal with Cingular unless I was in the High Sierra and never had any dropped calls.
The software is extremely annoying, again compared to my previous phone, a Sony-Ericsson Z500a. The middle "OK" button does not work as default selection button in all cases and I find myself hitting it when I should be hitting the left selection button all the time. While scrolling through the phone book, instead of being able to scroll right or left to see the alternate phone numbers for a person, you have to open each person's page to call their other numbers. Often the right selection button is the "Back" button for one instance, but then turns into something else, so you keep hitting it to go back, back, back, but instead you're into text messaging; You have to switch to the "C" key to get farther back. But if you hit the "C" key to go back at other times, such as when taking a photo or scrolling through the phone book, it will close everything and you'll be back to the main screen.
But the most annoying feature of this phone could cost you money. This phone is set up so that after you take a picture the only clear option is "Send to My Album?" which actually sends it to "your" album online at T-Mobile's website and T-Mobile charges you 25 cents each time you select "Yes". The only other menu choices are "Options" where you can then select "Take another photo", "Send to...", "Delete", etc. The only other way out, in order to quickly shoot another photo, is to take it upon yourself to hit "C". I really don't appreciate the fact that there's a single button, which looks to be the obvious choice after taking a photo: "Save? Sure, why not?" But which actually charges you money for a service you didn't sign up for, don't want, and cannot be turned off. It's not like I accidentally dialed a 900 number, this is a single button push costing you money. I can only assume T-Mobile set this up intentionally? If someone who isn't careful, or doesn't know how it works, like your kid, gets hold of your phone it's going to cost you. I plan to dispute every instance of this charge on this phone until T-Mobile gives me the service free, turns off the feature, or gives me a new phone.
amazing phone.......2007-05-24
this phone is awesome! i just got it a couple days ago at the tmobile store and i absolutely love it. the slider feature is great...very comfortable and easy to use. the sound is perfect...i can hear everything. the screen is nice...large and clear and bright. typing on the keypad is pretty easy...luckily i have small fingers. if you have bigger fingers you might find more of a problem. the wallpapers they give you loaded aren't great but some are pretty cute. the camera and video recorder are nice as well. i think the only thing that i didn't really like is that the screen gets covered in finger prints very easily. however, i highly recommend using one of those clothes that are used for wiping of glasses...works like a charm! =)
good phone but the screen is fragile.......2007-05-23
i like this phone but i learned that the slightest pressure on the screen will crack it and the ink will leak into the screen.. so if you're gonna get this phone, just make sure you keep the screen safe and don't press on it or let anything in your bag press it..
Novice tekkies can use it, too!.......2007-05-23
I'm not really one for gadgets and this thing has a lot more bells and whistles than I really need. I was gonna go with the Trace but I'm glad I changed my mind because this a great phone.
Cons: The battery life is shorter than expected. I find I'm recharging it every three days. I thought a new-fangled Samsung would at least last me a week. Maybe I expected too much.
The volume only goes up to 5. However, I sleep with earplugs, and when set at max volume, I can still hear the phone.
This phone would be GORGEOUS if it came in shiny black or gray! Samsung should mix up the color scheme.
Pros: I like the keypad alot. I haven't had any trouble with it, only when I'm playing games and make a misstep that kills my character.
The slide design is awesome, and I'd be partial to buying another one when I need to get a new phone.
The screen is big enough for my near-sighted/astigmatism-plagued eyes and the colors come through great.
Overall, I think it's good phone even for the not-so-advanced user like me.
battery flaw.......2007-05-23
I have to agree with other reviewers about the battery problem. I've had this phone for only six months, but it dies during use at least a few times a week eventhough it was fully recharged just prior to making/receiving calls.
The battery indicator malfunctions and warns you of low battery when it was just charged. The way to get around this problem is to take the battery out, put it back in, and power on again.
I called Samsung's warranty number today and they told me you would have to send the battery and the phone in separate packages and wait a few weeks until we hear from them.
I used to have an older Samsung which had none of these problems I'm having now. It's unfortunate that I cannot trust Samsung products anymore.
