Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the last great monitors made today.......2005-07-23

Once again Viewsonic did not disappoint. I have to have a clear true color monitor for my graphic work. Try to find a review of monitors and they are all 2 years old or more at the typical computer sites like CNET PCMAG etc because everyone wants an LCD screen today. So I took a chance on a trusted name and I am very happy with this product.

1 out of 5 stars Initial and Present Review.......2005-03-15

My 21" EIZO monitor finally failed. So I went in search of a replacement. My intention was to buy two 20" LCDs to replace it. Allowing them to run 1600X1200 with less eye strain because a 20" LCD is substantially larger than a 21" CRT. Unfortunately while researching the LCD's it became obvious that at this time ALL LCDs are inadequate for very fast First Person Shooter games (i.e. SOF2) leaving blurry stomach twisting smears whenever moving. Since LCDs are not yet ready for F.P.S. prime time yet I went back to CRTs. My two 19" ViewSonic LCDs at my office are very nice so I thought I would give ViewSonic CRTs a look. I purchased two G220f monitors and an ATI 9800XT video card,(with two video outputs), to run them.

These ViewSonics...are lousy. Several times a day I have to "make adjustments" as the pictures shrink and wander all over the screen, sometimes to the extent that Desktop Icons start getting clipped off. This occurs on both monitors sitting on the same desk hooked to the same computer. I now have them set with large borders so I don't have to herd them back on the screen so often. This brings up another annoyance. ViewSonic's on screen menu system is one of the poorest I've seen. They have a confusing menu system requiring loads of button pushing for simple adjustments. For example If you want to adjust the Horizontal Position you must press the "1" button, (clever huh?) then using the up/down arrows proceed to the Horizontal Size/Position menu selection. Next press "2", (obvious huh?), then press "2" again to get to "Position Adjust" because it's a sub menu of "Horizontal Size". This I have to do at least twice a day! Oh and don't ponder any of this too long or it will all disappear. If you select "Viewmeter" to see what refresh rate your video card is dishing out it doesn't stay on long enough to get thru the usual blanking while the monitor figures out a new video setting, requiring reselecting.

All this is bad enough but the worse thing about these two G220f monitors is that they are just not very sharp.. They do not even come close to the Eizo that I replaced. I do lots of CAD work on my computer and it was immediately obvious that more zooming and less of my CAD image was going to be required. This is very annoying as it is the same as running a lower resolution. Since I cannot read the drawing text at 1600x1200 that was easy to read on my previous monitor I must zoom in, say, 10% this means I can not see a lot of the drawing that I'm working on which in turn means I have to pan in the middle of drawing a line to place it's end point. This slows things down. Costs me time. Time is money...

In summary; they work, not well. It isn't just one monitor it's two identical monitors that are new so this isn't a fluke. I would never purchase another ViewSonic CRT unless someone I trusted could demonstrate a model that avoided these problems. I would have bought another Eizo for twice the money if they still bothered to sell CRTs. Do yourself a favor look elsewhere.

March 14,2005:

OKAY: Update. After 8 months here's where we are.

The warm up wandering has diminished to a point where I notice it rarely. This is good. The two monitors have not gotten any clearer though they are both merely adequate and still no where near the EIZO league. Now the bad news. One of them failed today. I turned it on. The light went on but no picture. Then after about 10 seconds there was a large "PACCK!" and then the screen lit up. The image is so blurry that nothing can be read. The image is oscillating right and left about 1/2" at a high rate, perhaps 60Hz. The entire screen pulses randomly brighter and dimmer at about 1-3Hz. Dang! I just love sending 60 pound items through UPS! Cripes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Monitor.......2004-11-25

Ive had this Monitor for 8months now...and its still working perfectly.....no missing pixels....simply perfect....ive used and been around 100's of Monitors of various brands....and this is the best..bar none... and with the same viewable area as a 22' monitor...this is a great buy

5 out of 5 stars My 2nd Viewsonic.......2004-07-25

My sisters' monitor was old, tiny (14in. vis) and blurry so i figured i'd get a new one and give her my 3 year old 17in. Viewsonic. This thing is great. My friend also uses a Veiwsonic and she's a grapic astist. I've been using this everyday for the last 4 months. I've heard nothing but good things about Veiwsonic and I like the picture. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS PRODUCT.

1 out of 5 stars Viewsonic 220 and 225 series awful!.......2004-07-15

Our company purchased two years ago thirty two (32) Viewsonic 220 and 225 monitors. As of July 2004, eighteen (18) have literally gone up in smoke. These monitors are miserable pieces of junk and pose a safety hazard.

Configure your notebook with a dedicated graphics card and load multiple web pages and streaming video without slowing your hard drive. Add the HP Imprint Finish for style and durability.

Amazon.com Product Description

Designed for fast access to your entire entertainment library, the HP Pavilion dv6105us notebook PC is a great choice for both families and business travelers on the go. The 15.4-inch high-definition BrightView display looks good even in direct sunlight, and you'll get smooth video processing with the NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 video/graphics card (up to 128 MB of shared video RAM). Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the included HP remote, then store it conveniently in the Express card slot. Easily manage your digital photo library and share with friends and family using the included HP Photosmart Premier software.

It's powered by the 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 MK-36 processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and excellent battery management. This notebook also features an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), built-in 54g Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), and ExpressCard slot. This is a Windows Vista capable PC.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is becoming average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Processor: Combining strong performance with efficient usage of power, the 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 MK-36 is uniquely optimized to power today's thinnest notebooks. It's also built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It includes such AMD technology features as HyperTransport (which increases the communication between integrated circuits), PowerNow! (which enables longer battery life and reduced heat generation), and Enhanced Virus Protection (which works with Windows XP Service Pack 2 to better withstand attacks from certain classes of viruses). It also features a 512 KB L2 cache and up to 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which displays an 18 percent larger picture than standard 15-inch screens and offers up to an 18 percent improvement in contrast ratio. It has a widescreen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Video is powered by an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 graphics/video card with up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card and built-in Altec Lansing speakers.

    Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. Be ready for the next generation of faster, lighter security, storage, wireless, and networking PC Card expansion products with the ExpressCard/54 slot. You get a basic offering of connectivity options, which does not include FireWire:

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 ExpressCard 54/34
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 notebook expansion port
  • 1 consumer IR (infrared)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Encarta Encyclopedia Plus, Quicken New User Edition 2006, PC Recovery, Microsoft Money 2006, Sonic DigitalMedia Plus, Muvee AutoProducer DVD Edition, Vongo, and HP Photosmart Premier for digital image editing and organizing.

    Dimensions and Weight
    This notebook measures 14.05 x 10.12 x 1.56 inches (WxHxD) and weighs 6.8 pounds.

    Power
This notebook is powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which offers up to 2 hours of battery life (dependent upon computing conditions).

    What's in the Box
This package contains the HP Pavilion dv6105us notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, IR remote control, earphones, and operating instructions. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase as well as technical telephone assistance for one year. Software is also covered for 30 days from date of purchase.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great budget laptop.......2007-05-15

First of all: shop around - I bought this same laptop new in summer '06 for $600. Second, clean up most of the worthless, bloated software that comes pre-installed on it.

Processor: The processor is fast enough for what the vast majority of laptop users want. Come on people, we don't need dual-core 3ghz processors to read emails, browse the web and use Word! We were doing that YEARS ago! If it is too slow, then clean up the garbage on your computer - I can't stress that enough.

Memory: 512mb is limiting for future use - it will be a MINIMUM for Vista, which is a ridiculous resource hog. It IS more than enough for Windows XP Media Center, which is what it shipped with when I bought mine. I only upgraded mine because 512mb -128mb(video) doesn't leave enough for modern games. Add 1gb, it is cheap and simple.

Display: the display is great - no problems, no complaints. Big, bright and beautiful.

Video: I play modern games on this thing after a memory upgrade - it doesn't play them as well as my desktop computer, but I did not even expect to be able to play these games on a $600 laptop! Very pleasant surprise.

Hard drive: 80gb is a little small, but made worse by HP's 12gb recovery partition. After subtracting space needed for creating the file system, HP's recovery partition, and Windows, you are left with just around 60gb to really use.

Optical drive: the dvd burner works great, I've had no problems with it. I didn't buy it for Lightscribe, but when I first tried out my laptop, I thought I got an added bonus! But alas, Booo to HP for blatantly implying it has LightScribe.

Ports: Ports are a bit limited, but it has everything most people could want, TV-output, monitor output, ethernet, modem, wifi. But no firewire, no parallel(who really wants those, anyway?). Only 2 usb ports and no flash memory slots for camera cards.

I have had many people comment on my cool-looking laptop - it looks very attractive and it works very well.

I would give this laptop 5 stars because it is a VERY good machine for the money I paid for it. I withhold a star because HP ships without any system restore discs - they make you burn them yourself and you don't even get a CLEAN Windows install disc. They reserve a large part of the hard drive for the system restore, making usable disk space even less. The laptop comes pre-loaded with so much garbage software, it is no wonder people think they need something faster!! If I was not so happy with the machine, I would subtract more stars just for the pathetic, garbage software configuration HP ships it with.

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen somebody think they need a newer/faster computer simply because of the bloated, garbage software on it, I would buy another one of these for my girlfriend!

That's all I have to say about that.

2 out of 5 stars HP Tech Support.......2007-04-16

I bought this system for my 13 yr old homeschooled daughter for her schoolwork.
From day 1 it would not complete downloads through the download manager. To load Firefox I had to download it on my Dell and thumb drive it over to her HP. She can not download music or videos. Tech support suggested I get more ram which I did. That was no help and support suggested I buy a support contract since my 30 day support had expired. I read from the warranty where software support was 90 days with registration. It made no difference, they can't understand me and I can't understand them most of the time except when they want to sell something. I actually like the system but tech support needs lots of help.

2 out of 5 stars A decent starter notebook, but with huge discrepancies!.......2007-01-22

This is a good starter Notebook for those getting into the next generation computer game a little late. With a Vista compatible setup at a relatively low price, the computer sounds like a great deal, but you will be more disappointed in this computer than happy with it in a couple of months.

    PROS:
Screen - Not too shabby. Most companies are releasing pretty good and pretty bright screens, so that's shouldn't be a big concern. I was afriad it would look washed out, but HP usually does a pretty good job on the screen.
Multi-Drive - The DVD burner is a nice touch, but don't get too excited, keep reading.
    Good Ports - Including S-Video

    CONS: - almost everything
Processor - Not a dual core. This is a huge disappointment, considering almost every competitor on the market has a dual core processor. It is a 64-bit processor (which is required for the Ultimate Vista), but low benchmarks makes the price not so suprising.
RAM - 512MB, for a Vista laptop, you need a 1GB minimum, no questions. 2GB if you want a smooth run these days, but anything under 1GB is going to give you headaches.
80GB HD - Vista-related programs are probably going to take a huge chunk out of that, DirectX 10 programs will be heavy, and with hard drives becoming cheaper by the months, you'd expect 120GB from a budget notebook.
nVidia 6150GT - Normally this is a good thing, but it's a battery killer. THE BATTERY IN THIS LAPTOP IS AROUND 110 MINUTES... THAT'S TERRIBLE!!!!!! A 6150 is nothing to brag about anyways, it's not much better than a Integrated Media Accelerator... and it is still using up your RAM. Imaging how slow your computer is going to run on a Vista computer with 384MB of function RAM. This is a huge letdown. You can't even enjoy games on this laptop, let alone actually taking advantage of the DirectX 10 games coming out later this year.
WHERE'S THE LIGHTSCRIBE I WAS PROMISED? - I don't know if it was just an Amazon.com mistake for a few of the shipments, or if it's for all of them, but I'm not the only one that was gipped on the LightScribe. All the other formats read and burned alright, but the LightScribe didn't do so hot.

BOTTOM LINE: This laptop does nothing right. HP went in the wrong direction with this laptop and gave a false hope laptop for the people that just want to have Vista, but don't meet the specs for one. Not only will this computer not run Vista well, it won't even run Windows XP that well, and that's the biggest shame.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Laptop But...........2007-01-19

It Is a Awesome Laptop But Don't Let The Description fool You Like It Did Me And Others. LightScribe Does Not Come With IT!!! Main Reason I Choose This one Over Others (It Comes With LightScribe Software Which Is Real Confusing When You Told It Doesn't Have LightScribe)But Other Than That A Solid Laptop And A Awesome Price That Can't be Beat By Many. I Am Extremly Satisfied With This Laptop.

    5 out of 5 stars Please read.......2007-01-19

I recently orderd this laptop and i was very impressed with what i got....most of it anyway. After reading the product discrption i was under the impression that this came with the little remote and most importantly the LightScribe feature, which was one of my main reason for purchasing this computer. After receiving the laptop and not being able to make the light scribe work i contacted HP Tech Support and they took my imformation and assured me that this product does not have lightscribe technology in it. However, besides that everything else about this thing is spectacular. The reasolution is near perfect, it works great, comes with many programs already installed, has a good battery life and it is the best looking laptop in its price class by far. I would definity recommend this product just make sure you know exactly what your paying for.
