Designed for ease of use while you're listening on the go, the player is sleek and durable, with a rugged, heat-resistant body and 45-second electronic skip protection. The convenience extends to the six-key, in-cord remote control, which lets users skip, rewind, or play tracks without lifting the player out of the carrying pouch. The remote is a great fit for joggers, skaters, and other active users. Philips addressed the biggest weakness of many portable CD players--the thin, sometimes reedy sound--by outfitting the AX5311 with a digital bass boost system, which optimizes the lowest frequencies at any volume. The headphones are also bass-intensive thanks to their Bass Wave Tech wiring.
The AX5311 includes all the most basic CD player functions and a few extras, including repeat play, shuffle play, 30-track programming, intro scan, and hold and resume mode. In addition, it plays CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs for up to 40 hours on a pair of standard AA batteries, though listeners are advised to buy rechargeable batteries to enjoy the most efficient power-to-use ratio. Listeners will know when the batteries are low thanks to the indicator on the LCD screen, which also displays the current track and time remaining, among other tidbits.
