If you think all budget portable CD players are poorly made, Memorex's MD3020 personal compact disc player will prove you wrong. One of the least-expensive portable models available, it offers satisfying sound and a welcome assortment of features.
There's no mistaking which control you're activating, as the handsome, silver-finished shell employs differently shaped push buttons (for play/pause, programming, repeat, stop, and forward or reverse skip) arrayed symmetrically around its small LCD display.
Rather than using the standard 1-bit digital-to-analog converter found in pricier models, the MD3020 employs a 16-bit chip. This is somewhat of a mixed blessing, as it enables this model to actually outperform the higher-priced units in terms of high-frequency extension and detail, provided it's used with well-recorded CDs. With less stellar recordings, however, the MD3020 can sound slightly harsh or bright due to the more revealing 16-bit D/A converter.
The supplied headphones are unimpressive, though considering the player's price, this comes as no surprise. You'll enjoy better sound by turning on the bass-boost circuit, which adds 6 dB to the low frequencies.
The MD3020 comes equipped with an AC adapter for home use. Oddly enough, the MD3020 lacks any sort of antishock protection. As a result, it's extremely sensitive to bumps and seems to skip at the slightest provocation. If you want a personal CD player to use while you're sitting or relaxing, the MD3020 is an excellent choice. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a driving, jogging, cycling, or even walking companion, look elsewhere.
It's difficult to be too critical of this product's shortcomings. After all, for less than the price of a decent meal, Memorex serves up a fine-sounding, ergonomically excellent player, a pair of average headphones, an AC adapter, and a padded carrying case. Budget-conscious music lovers who listen to relax, rather than to sweat, could scarcely find a better way to spend a few dollars.
