Small, rugged, and loaded with useful features, Panasonic's SL-SW870K is a paragon of style and portability. Its high-quality, 40-second anti-skip protection guards against listening interruptions during active use, while the supplied "Brainshaker" headphones use a feature called VMSS, which induce vibrations--coincident with the music--that give you the sensation of bass frequencies too low or too powerful for the headphones to reproduce. VMSS may be selected or disabled using the headphones' inline (wired) remote control. The SL-SW870K runs on two AA batteries (not supplied), from which it derives 20 hours of continuous playback with anti-skip protection off and 25 hours with protection on.

For equalization, the unit offers a bass-boost feature (S-XBS), which emphasizes low frequencies in the headphones or in any devices connected from the headphone jack. Use the player's hold switch to prevent unintended (and possibly battery-wasting) changes of state, such as starting playback from a stopped state when the player is jostled inside a backpack or purse. Resume lets you continue playback from the last-played point, and random play shuffles the track sequence for more surprising, radio-like listening.

The headphone jack and DC power input both come with handy rubber seals to keep dirt out when the ports are not in use. A low-battery indicator on the display alerts you to the need to change batteries soon. The unit is capable of powering portable speakers (not included) from its headphone jack, and you can use car adapter model SH-COC9 (not included) for in-vehicle enjoyment.
