The Philips AJ3951 clock radio makes the process a little easier thanks to its bevy of convenient features, including a CD player that lets you choose your own rise-and-shine soundtrack and a pair of 3-inch bass-reflex speakers that offer a pleasingly rich stereo sound. The device also offers an analog AM/FM tuner for conventional radio programming and a dual alarm setting for two-person households. It's the extras that really make the unit, however. For instance, the "weekend sleeper" option automatically disables the alarms on Saturday and Sunday (so you aren't unexpectedly jolted awake on Saturday morning), and then restarts the alarms once the workweek arrives--all without any help from you. In addition, sleepers who hate to have their dreamy revelries interrupted by sudden bursts of music can activate the "gentle wake" mode, which starts the alarm at a soft volume and then gradually increases it as you open your eyes.
