Amazon.com Product Description

Here's the latest contender in the race to build the thinnest, most stylish phone on the planet. In fact, the Samsung t509 is one of the skinniest phones money can buy, measuring just .39 inches thick, or 10 millimeters. Amazingly, this phone also happens to pack a lot of features into its svelte frame, including Bluetooth, a VGA camera, support for EDGE high speed data, a speakerphone, and more. It's a the perfect way to slim down and take advantage of T-Mobile service.

So thin, it almost disappears when turned sideways. View the t509 in 3D, or check out a feature presentation.

Design
One look at this phone and you'll wonder where the phone went. The design is simple, refined, and--once again--thin. The numeric keypad resides below a circular five-way control toggle that controls most of the phone's menus and functions. The large, 176 x 220 display supports up to 65,000 colors, while 10.5 MB of internal memory gives you plenty of room for pictures, contacts, and other data. The t509's VGA camera unit resides on the rear of the phone, and there's a port for plugging in the included hands-free headset.

Calling Features
The t509's phone book can store up to 1000 contacts, phone numbers and addresses, while a call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls. In addition to a vibrating alert, the t509 supports polyphonic ringtones. You can also download additional ringtones from T-Mobile's t-zones service. A speakerphone lets you talk hands-free while you're doing other things, and picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. Like all T-Mobile phones, the t509 also supports voicemail, caller ID, conference calling, call forwarding, call waiting, call hold, built-in paging, and access to T-Mobile's 411 service. Lastly, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.

Need to stay in touch often with some of your closest friends? The t509 is fully compatible with T-Mobile's MyFaves service, which allows you to call up to five of your most common contacts--on any network--without using any of your minutes. Learn more about MyFaves.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The t509 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. Instant messaging clients for AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, and ICQ are included.

Getting on the Internet is easy with the t509, too. It supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the new, high speed EDGE data protocol. When used with a T-Mobile data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. There's also a built-in browser for t-zones downloads and mobile Web browsing. T-Mobile's t-zones service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile text messaging users.

A number of handy productivity tools are bundled with the t509 including a voice memo recorder, an alarm clock, a calculator with unit converter, and a calendar.

Imaging and Entertainment
The t509's built-in VGA (640 x 480) camera captures stills and video to the phone's 10 MB of internal memory. The camera captures videos of up to 15 seconds in length at 176 x 144 resolution.

Meanwhile, if you want to dress up your t509, picture effects, custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be set to fit your personality. Plus, Java support is built into the t509, making it a powerful gaming companion. Games are downloadable via the t-zones service.

Vital Statistics
The Samsung SGH-t509 weighs 2.7 ounces and measures 4.6 x 1.83 x 0.39 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 172 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

2 out of 5 stars Plum Bad.......2007-05-09

I upgraded to this phone about six month ago and have had so many dropped calls. The reception is horrible! Just about every call that is longer than five minutes is dropped. I don't get service in the grocery store, at work, at my boyfriends house or at my mothers house. I don't think that it is the carrier because my previous phone did not have these problems. It is very small and lightweight and the autolock feature is nice. The camera takes clear pictures and the alarm clock has admirable features. The display screen is clear but the buttons are just a little too small for my fingers. I would suggest choosing another phone because having one that does not get service is kind of pointless.

1 out of 5 stars beauty is only skin deep.......2007-03-14

Do not be fooled by the ultra sleek sexy look of this phone!
I have never experienced so many annoying situatations with any other phone. The Samsung 509s has a battery life of 5 hours--if the phone has been used occasionally. (THis is with the light settings, alert settings, volume settings, etc. set to CONSERVE as much battery as possible).
THis phone is the worst! EVER!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2007-01-26

I bought this phone. Works great in the US, but does not work at all with service providers in India. It's a delicate phone and pretty long. I am unable to hold in my trouser pockets.

5 out of 5 stars this phone makes me almost perfect happy but not quite.......2007-01-24

following the line is my old review, which is mostly true, but, having used this phone for a while not, I must say that it is too quiet for lil old hard of hearing me (too many concerts without ear plugs? and also I need to add that the battery needs to be charged every other day, unlike my old nokia, but this may be common for camera phones.

old review:

so I am not so super techie when it comes to cell phones. my last phone was an ancient free nokia that was only a phone. this time around, I wanted a phone, camera, video & voice recorder...that was it. I text only a bit and didn't need a radio/mp3 player or game thing or email thing.

I wanted a solid camera phone. wasn't drawn to flips or sliders. didn't care to spend too much.

I tried out (through t-mobile...they let you try out a phone for 14 days (30 here in cali) to see if you like it) a nokia 6133 and I hated it. way too quiet for me. not intuitive enough...felt like it could break at any moment.

switched to this and it's like night and day. simple. solid. slender. I am very much in love.

I do with that the headphones and charger had separate ports. they share one and that is the only gripe I have with it. well, that and the snooze alarm is only 5 minutes but I should prob ween myself off of that little addicition anyhoo.

but I am very satisfied with how this functions as a phone and a camera and recommend it to anyone needing something simple. nice bright display. sweet jingly options for ringtones...Good Times!

3 out of 5 stars Charging problems.......2007-01-20

This phone is nice and thin and very comfortable. The only problem that I have had with this phone is that the charger and the hands-free use the same slot on the phone. I have had problems with the contact and I have to sometimes put a rubber band around the charger to get it to charge. My sister has the same phone and has had to have hers replaced twice because hers won't charge at all.
