The open frame module design mounts easily to speaker cabinets creating a self contained portable P.A. system. The unit features two microphone and one line level input, each with its own level control allowing for easy mixing of all inputs. Each input is compatible with both balanced and unbalanced sources. A handy balanced line level output allows for easy daisy chaining of multiple amplifier units. The amp also has a convenient speaker output for connection of an additional "slave", or non-amplified speaker system, so only one amplifier module is needed for a two speaker system. Under the hood, the Treo 680 features Palm OS 5.4.9, 64MB of non-volatile flash memory available for user storage, and an Intel PXA270 312 MHz processor. The design retains the same popular form factor as the Treo 650 with a few subtle, yet significant, changes. The design is slimmer and lighter, while the updated OS provides for better phone and PDA application integration. The amazing 320 x 320 color touchscreen is still there, as is the full QWERTY backlit keypad. This time though, the expansion card slot is located on the right hand side of the unit. The expansion card slot is compatible with full sized SD cards, and supports up to 2 GB of memory (memory cards sold separately).

Other design features include an infrared port for line of sight data transfers, as well as a handy switch for turning off the phone's ringer. A five-way navigator controls most of the phone's menus and operating system functions, while quick application buttons on either side of the navigator get you to your favorite applications in a snap. The left side of the unit features a volume up/down toggle plus a handy user-customizable button that can be assigned to any phone or PDA function. The rear of the Treo 680 houses a loudspeaker, as well as the VGA camera unit. A touch-screen stylus can be tucked away on the right side of the phone. Meanwhile, a combined charging, data, and accessory attachment port is housed on the bottom of the unit, as is a standard 2.5 mm stereo headset jack.

Calling and PDA Features
All of the Treo 680's phone and PDA functions are designed to provide an integrated, seamless experience. For instance, you can type in the name or initials of a contact on the keypad to dial them. Or, use the touch-screen and stylus to copy information from an email and quickly paste it into another email or text message.

Updated from the Treo 650, the 680 sports many improved and new phone/PDA features. The user can now see messages waiting in a preemptive alert window, and the favorites view is now in one vertical easy-to-see list. The length of the favorites list is only limited to available memory. A big dial pad can be formatted on the color touch screen, and the user does not need to go to another application to access the contact list; calling and contacts are all completely integrated. There's even an easy dialing prefix feature for when you're out of the country. Different country presets can be programmed into the 680 for true jet-setter world roaming and cell phone convenience. Lastly, easy access to recently visited applications can be achieved by holding down the launch key.

All of the latest phone features folks expect are built-in, too, like a handsfree speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones, a vibrate mode and picture caller ID. The capacity of the unit's address book is only limited by the amount of internal and expansion memory available. Use the Treo 680's Bluetooth capability to wirelessly sync your contacts with your PC or Mac (yes, Mac!). Headsets, car kits and other wireless peripherals can also be paired with the unit via Bluetooth.

The Treo 680 is also a fully functional Palm OS device. That means that a huge library of applications, from spreadsheets to word processors to games, can be added to the Treo 680. Download, view, and edit Word and Excel compatible files, rehearse a PowerPoint presentation, even review PDF files, directly on the 680's conveniently large color touchscreen. I initially had the same lousy battery life that a lot of people complained about,until I applied the FIX: Palm has identified that the Treo 680 device can experience reduced battery life when the camera is used. The camera may continue to draw power from the battery when the device is in standby mode. Treo 680 users should install the Treo 680 Camera Update to address this issue.[...]

Lousy upgrade.......2007-03-26

I was impatient to buy the successor of my beloved Treo 650, and did so last January by upgrading to the Treo 680. I have been a faithful customer of Palm technology since 1997, and for the first time, I am disappointed. Of course, I still have the friendly Palm OS, tailor made for smart phones. I also have upgrade compatibility for my 15,000 records stored in the Treo's four main applications. But the minuscule battery of the 680 forces me to curtail Versamail sync and phone conversations, and its clumsy command bar results in unexpected commands (contrary to the 650, buttons are too close to each other). Reliability of the 680 is also left to be desired, especially compared with the 650 after firmware update. Finally, I use Intellisync for dual sync with both user-friendly Palm Desktop and heavy duty email MS Outlook; the acquisition of Pumatech by Nokia results in a clumsy new release of Intellisync for Treo: Intellisync new version added a record number in the "note" field of all my records ! I quickly reverted to an older Intellisync version and I wonder what will happen when I need to upgrade with MS Office 2007 compatibility... Nokia's low blow to Palm ? It is time Palm responds with a decent dual sync solution of their own. If not, it's decided: I will switch to the Pearl.

Fantastic SmartPhone.......2007-02-19

I have gone through several smartphones in the past 4 months (Including, Cingular HTC 8125, and Nokia E62) and can safely say that this is the best phone I have owned. The Palm operating system is much easier to use than the Windows operating system ( albeit, less powerful) and much more customizable and synchronization-friendly than the Symbian OS. Its great for easy installation of software.

Pros:
- Very customizable interface, making the phone very user friendly. You can set any application or any number to dial as a preset button.
- Palm OS is easy to use, and thus, you actually get to take advantage of the many features of the phone, unlike Windows Mobile, which is definantly more powerful than Palm OS, but cumbersome and difficult to use at times.
- You can use this as a one handed phone...very important for people like me who like to drive and text/email.
- Perfect size, weight and feel of the phone in your hand and on your ear.
The lack of the antennae stub on this model is a huge aesthetic improvement.
- Easy synchronization with your Outlook mailbox or with the Palm Desktop
- Can set the phone to automatically retrieve your emails and alert you, which is very useful (although limits battery life)

Cons:
- Battery life is somewhat worse than other phones. I have to charge my phone every night, and I probably use about 15 minutes of internet, 30 minutes of mp3 player, autoretrieve email every 30 min, and 2 hour talk time as well as some other Palm functions. If you have it set on auto-retrieve for your email, the battery life seems to decrease impressively. The newer manufactured 680s have a fix installed for this problem apparently.
- You cant plug in your own headsets into the device ( like your iPod headphones) you have to use a specific headphone that fits and you can get it from Palm. I hate that.

I suggest buying this phone unlocked from Palm, instead of from Cingular. I got it for 350$ with a 1G SD card and stereo headphones included. Also, if you get it from Cingular, they always ruin the look of the phone by plastering their logo all over both sides of the phone.

OVERALL: extremely satisfied with this easy to use, highly customizable, powerful smartphone, despite a somewhat shorter battery life.

Great PDA, Not So Great Phone.......2007-02-15

I had a Palm TX which I loved, but didn't like having to go to WiFi sites for the web. I also had a Moto V557 phone which is the best cell phone I've ever owned. I purchased the Treo for the best of both worlds.

I like the Treo 680, but I had to read all of the instructions, call customer service and practice using certain features to not be frustrated with the phone. For example, I had difficulty answering the phone using the touch screen and had to practice pressing the small send button. (Which I usually missed while in a rush to answer the phone.)

I like the web because it's fast enough that I don't miss the WiFi. I had to get used to the fact that many web sites aren't small enough for the phone, but it's excellent for using Google maps, looking up business and giving the number for easy dial (just tap the blue line), checking bank accounts, online orders, movies, weather and especially the news. Email is good too with the Palm software. I didn't use Express or GetGood email. I absolutely love the chat setting on the messaging.

Now, the phone is another story. I miss the ease of dialing a traditional cell. My Bluetooth does not work well with the 680. People typically tell me that they can't hear me so I now use a corded ear bud. The Bluetooth doesn't work with the voice dial feature that is purchased separately. You can't insert hard pauses with phone numbers that require you to dial extensions. There is no way to delete one digit at a time if you misdial a number. You have to leave the phone dialing page and return to redial. The phone dials slowly if there are other programs running. And lastly, you can't check your calendar or other features after answering the phone if the key pad was locked when you answered the phone. You have to hang up with the person, unlock the phone, check the calendar and call them back.

The battery life is poor, but I keep a charger in the car which helps a great deal.

All in all, I love my Treo 680. I have purchased additional software that I strongly recommend. They are: Launcher X(excellent), Mobil Write, Treo Voice Dialing, The Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus, Scrabble and Mars Needs Cows.

I also recommend that you keep you Treo locked with a security password. I have not found a carrier that will offer insurance on this $400 phone.

How to resolve the battery issue.......2007-02-15

When I first got my phone, I was quite excited. It had more memory than my current Treo 650 however only after one day I noticed the battery life was draining much faster than I had anticipated. From my research, I discovered a few things that needed to be done before I extend my battery life to more than 10 hours.
1)I had to apply a camera patch since my phone was manufactured prior to Jan 18th. This patch can be found on Palm support site.

2) I needed to completely drain my battery until there was nothing then charge it for 24 hours.

Once I did these two things, my phone has lasted for a few days without a charge, and I've set my versamail to retrieve messages when they arrive. This is a big plus for me going from getting emails every hour to getting them when they arrive.

I've had no problems with any of my SD cards or mini-SD cards. The increase internal memory also helps since I use my TomTom navigation with my Treo. I've heard the various complaints, but you have to work through some of them. it is a great phone.
