Offering an adaptable horizontal/vertical orientation inspired by the monitors seen in many professional recording studios, the speakers are ideal for backyard porches and patios, or even moist locations such as near hot tubs or in locker rooms. Each S36AWII employs an exclusive 6-inch WeatherPlas cone woofer, 4-inch WeatherPlas cone midrange, and 1-inch pure titanium dome tweeter to make music and movies come alive with superb depth and unmatched clarity. The tweeter also boasts an oval design called Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS), which results in a wider horizontal dispersion of sound. The idea is simple: turn every seat, regardless of location, into the best seat in the house or patio. Additional audio enhancements include an IsoPower baffle that reduces distortion caused by cabinet vibration and a Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) crossover network that preserves the original signal for additional clarity.

The S36AWII's owe much of their outdoor versatility to their high-temperature, oversized Kapton voice coils and Heatscape motor structures, which stand up to intense heat and whipping wind. For added protection, JBL recommends locating the speakers under a roof eve or awning for best results, as the speakers are moisture-resistant but not waterproof. Should listeners not possess a suitable outdoor environment, they can move inside and use the speakers as bookshelf units or rear speakers in a comprehensive surround sound system.
