This 2-way, 6" bookshelf loudspeaker with MDF enclosure reproduces sound with unmatched clarity and power. The PolyPlas (polymer-coated cellulose fiber) cone woofer features traditional JBL engineering; the same technologies used in JBL's professional equipment that can be found in stadiums, music halls and movie theaters around the world. Shielded components allow placement near video monitors. High-temperature, oversized Kapton voice coil and HeatScape motor structure allow these speakers to effortlessly play all types of movies and music. A low-diffraction IsoPower baffle directs the sound power into the room, reducing distortion caused by cabinet vibration. The computer-designed enclosure requires no bracing. The FreeFlow flared port increases bass response without adding unwanted port noise. JBL's custom-designed drivers allow the use of simple, Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) crossover networks with high-quality electrical components that minimize processing that could degrade the signal.

The Basics

Processor: The Intel Celeron M Processor 440 is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. The 1.86 GHz speed is complemented by a speedy 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) This processor sits near the top of its class (as of January 2007).

Hard Drive: The 100 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs. It provides enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (1 x 512 MB DDR2) is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It provides two DIMM slots and has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

DVD/CD Drive: The multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

Nice basic computer with some added memory...........2007-03-29

I have owned one of these for about a month now. I have been pleasantly surprised by the computer so far. I wanted a basic notebook with a good size hard drive. This computer has a 100gb hard drive, which is quite spacious for one in this price range. I was a little bit leery about the Celeron M processir, but this one runs at 1.86 ghz, it seemed noticeably faster to me than some of the lower Celeron M computers I have tried out. The computer comes with 512 mb of memory. The person at the store advised me to add another 512 mb. Boy was he right on the money !! The difference in performance is significant, especially for the $60 the extra memory cost me. It makes the difference between Windows Vista Basic being rather pokey and having it run at what I consider an acceptable level.
The battery life is acceptable I think, but not spectacular. I've gotten just shy of 3 hours battery life with the battery supplied. The screen is nice and bright on this computer for one in this price range. And the sound is pretty acceptable thru the built-in speakers (it could be a bit louder, but sound quality is pretty good.) I think this laptop would be a good investment for a college student that doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg for a new laptop, or for someone on a limited budget. I am happy with mine, and I think it is a good value for the price.
