The label "monitor loudspeaker" is thrown around as casually as conversation at a cocktail party, but few speakers actually live up to the title. The Monitor 6 by DAS (distributed in the United States by Sennheiser) is one that does. A true monitor loudspeaker, the two-way Monitor 6 combines detail and accuracy with high power handling and remarkable bass response, all in a bookshelf-size enclosure.

The Monitor 6 driver complement features a 6.5-inch polypropylene bass-midrange unit with a stiff cast aluminum frame and a 0.75-inch soft-dome, fluid-cooled tweeter, which is surrounded by a proprietary "waveguide" technology called LQS (see FAQ for more information). The rear-ported enclosure is built of medium-density fiberboard, while rigidity and cosmetics are increased by screw-on wood side panels.

When it comes to sound, the Monitor 6s is big, open, warm, and easy. There's never any feeling of strain or edge, and yet there's plenty of detail, texture, and an array of tone colors that would have made Monet grin from ear to ear. Vocals have a lovely, natural presentation, with no sense of nasality or box coloration. The high frequencies are the way we like them: extended, creamy, and rather sweet, yet when asked to they can snarl with the raunchiest electric guitar licks. Perhaps the most surprising of the Monitor 6's many qualities is the bass, which not only reaches to the manufacturer's mid-40 Hz rating but does so with authority, weight, and terrific resolution. And the Monitor 6 will play plenty loud, so not only can you rock, you can also use them as a serious home theater speaker (again see FAQ). You will want to feed them a healthy dose of power, though, because at 85 dB these are not the most sensitive of speakers.

For hookups, the Monitor 6's three-way posts are of high quality, but we lament the inability to attach spade lugs to them, limiting us to banana plugs and bare wire.

Although the price may seem like a lot for such a compact speaker, a host of fine qualities makes the Monitor 6 an excellent value and earns it a very enthusiastic recommendation. --Wayne Garcia

The Basics

Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2060 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 1.60 GHz processor speed, fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. Hard Drive: The 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 20,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB DDR2) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It provides two DIMM slots and has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

DVD/CD Drive: The multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. As a Dell & Apple owner, I admit to being a bit apprehensive over this HP. It looks so beautiful but how would it perform? For everyday tasks it's flawless - web, word, photoshop, itunes all run quickly and without hesitation. The screen images are beautiful, the media card reader is perfect, wifi runs at high speeds and the little remote that hides in the card slot are ingenious.

If HP could only fix the short battery life, this machine would get a 5.

Consider this machine highly recommended.

I can't find anything wrong to say about this laptop. I love everything about it, especially the screen. I think its great value for the price also.

HP PAV 6226 Notebook.......2007-03-30

(2 weeks after purchase) Great machine loaded with more software than Bill Gates' broom closet. If you're going to be doing alot of memory draining work, I suggest ordering an extra gig of ram (it comes with 1 gig,with 2 gig max). This PC is for my wife, and she basically does email, Excel, music , so 1 gig works fine. Vista is a work of art and very easy to use. Amazon did a gret job on the transaction and delivery.

I'm not a fan of the outside case. I'll be honest. It looks kind of stupid being a glossy black. To make matters worse it has to be the 2nd worst design idea in the history of Tech after the ipod polished chrome case. ie. It scratches very very easily - and gets finger prints even easier than that.
Other than this, it is really a great deal for the price. It works like a charm. It's not the sleekest thing you'll ever lay your eyes on (and it's not the lightest thing either). But it works.
Also, you might want to look into the fact that the duo core on this model is NOT a duo 2 - not like im a tech expert but apparently it is significantly slower than some of the other models out there. Not that i would notice considering i only use it for internet/microsoft office and watching DVDs.
