Editorial Review:
Product Description
All of the Diamond series use audiophile grade film capacitors in the crossover, as opposed to the usual bi-polar types. All use the 'Audiostealth' rock polymer in their construction. The Diamond 7.1 is a compact 2-way loudspeaker which continues the Diamond traditions of affordability, outstanding sound quality and technical performance. After many years, this is still the definitive bookshelf speaker.
Amazon.com Review
British loudspeakers are known and cherished for their precision and detail, and Wharfedale brings hefty helpings of both to a tiny, affordable speaker with astoundingly beefy low end. This two-way speaker is ported at the back--as it would have to be to pump out sound below 50 Hz. The amazing thing is that Wharfedale resorts to porting without also defaulting to a tubby, muddy, or grievously unbalanced tonal character. The Diamond 7.1s are cheery little things, extremely well suited to rear-channel home theater service or front-and-center bedroom, office, or kitchen placement.

These speakers are so small and lightweight that we questioned their ability to render even a facade of full-bodied sound. However, we were happily impressed. The Wharfedale 7.1s are detailed, effortless, warm, and punchy; what bass they can muster is firm and taut, like you'd want from a small speaker. Most speakers have trouble recreating the deep and woody sound of an acoustic upright bass; on the Diamond 7.1s, recordings of this instrument sound articulate and musical, if not necessarily six feet tall.

The Diamond 7.1s sound best at medium-to-loud levels, but you do get more bass as you crank them up, and distortion doesn't seem to be a worry (see our accompanying FAQ for more on Wharfedale's antidistortion measures). The speakers are fairly dynamic, though they do compress a little under high-power, bass-heavy material. They also sound a little piercing at the level where the low end sounds right for rock listening--in this respect the removable grilles help, so if you're going to listen loudly, leave 'em on.

Imaging is good, and the Diamond 7.1s offer a good sense of low-level ambient detail, especially with ambient recordings commonly found on classical CDs. Often small speakers, even very good ones, will really dry up ambient recordings--that is, shrink the perceived room size where the musical performance is taking place. This is largely because so many bookshelf speakers have little deep bass, and many ambient or spatial cues live in low tones and in room resonances that make up the atmosphere of a recording, rather than in specific musical tones.

If pressed to name shortcomings, we'd say the Diamond 7.1s' high frequencies are not as smooth or effortless in quality as those from pricier speakers and are a little too pronounced (emphasizing, for instance, the tape hiss present on CDs mastered from analog tapes). And the bass, for all its pleasing qualities, is a little muddier than one would want in an ideal speaker. But considering the per-dollar level of quality here, these quibbles are easily forgiven.

For a budget sound system or merely a compact, secondary-use pair, we highly recommend Wharfedale's Diamond 7.1 bookshelf speakers. --Michael Mikesell

It also includes LightScribe technology for personalized silkscreen-quality, laser-etched CD/DVD labels created right in the drive.

This desktop is powered by the 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. Store more music, videos, and data on the very roomy 320 GB Serial ATA hard drive, which offers fast transfer rates. It also comes loaded with 1 GB of RAM (which can be bumped up to 4 GB), an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 video/graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video RAM, a wide variety of connection ports on both the front and rear of the box, and a 9-in-1 memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats.

In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). The Basics

  • Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 4200+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It outperforms the highest-performing AMD Athlon 64 4000+ single-core processor on multi-tasking benchmarks by up to 30 percent. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.

This 2.2 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

  • Hard Drive: The huge 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (PC4200, 2 x 512 MB, 533 MHz) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and gaming software. This desktop has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 1 GB), perfect for high-def video and 3-D gaming.
  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Video & Audio
This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150LE graphics/video card with 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Windows Vista can also allocate up to 319 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. It features Nvidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.

    Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
For expansion, this desktop has three PCI slots (two available), one PCI Express slot (available), two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (available), and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

  • 7 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (3 in front, 4 in rear)
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 2 headphone and 2 microphone (front and rear)
  • 2 line-in (front and rear)
  • Surround sound speaker outputs (rear/side/center (subwoofer)
  • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect to your favorite Wi-Fi hotspot.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

Includes Microsoft Works 8, Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 (with 60 days of Live Update), Roxio Creator (with LightScribe technology), Muvee autoProducer (for creating professional-looking home videos and burning to DVD), and HP Total Care Advisor.

    Dimensions & Weight
This desktop PC measures 7 x 17 x 15.2 inches (WxDxH) and weighs approximately 24 pounds.

    Power
This desktop is Energy Star rated, which means that it uses 15 watts or less of power when on low-power mode. An Energy Star qualified computer uses 70% less electricity than computers without enabled power management features.

    What's in the Box

4 out of 5 stars Good hardware; may be underpowered for Vista Premeium.......2007-05-12

The system has worked well since it arrived, but I have my doubts about the Microsoft Vista operating system. The only comment at the system level is that it lacks the memory to run Vista Home Premium effectively. The 1GB standard RAM was tolerated for about a week before I invested in another 1GB memory stick. It could probably use another 1GB, but I'll wait until a good deal comes along. Thankfully it uses Kingston ValuRAM without any issues.

I have been able to load nearly all of my programs and all have worked well once the memory was upgraded. Programs like MS Office, Quicken and the like all seem very cooperative with the Vista operating system. The glaring exception for me was the Retrospect backup sofwtare that shipped with my WD external hard drive. I need to investigate upgrade options.

As usual, don't be fooled by Microsft's minimum memory claims. Though the software may run, it won't run effeciently. Consider upgrading to 2GB or more immediately (the system has a capacity of 4GB).

    4 out of 5 stars A good computer, but..........2007-05-10

My wife is not at all thrilled with Vista, but the computer was a good buy otherwise. When she can get programs to run, they run very quickly. She would prefer Windows XP however.

4 out of 5 stars Great value to start! Very upgradable.......2007-04-12

Out of the box this computer is great and performs very well. I am a typical user (internet surfing, minimal downloads, word documents, etc.) and found this computer to be very quick and capable of much more. I read some reviews and saw that Vista likes lots of memory. The only downfall to this package is that if you want to upgrade the memory, the originals are not compatible with other aftermarket. I ended up purchasing 2GB of memory to start and fill the slots for memory but the new and old memory were not compatible...I spent lots of time with HP, PNY, and Geek Squad and never really got a good reason as to why. Needless to say I bought another 2GB of memory on sale for $80/GB for a total of 4GB and I couldn't be happier. I also bought an upgraded video card thinking that I would play some games...the only downfall is that Vista isn't compatible with lots of current and older games on the market so my choices were limited. The system is great and I'm very happy so far after a month of use.

    4 out of 5 stars Amazing Value!.......2007-04-05

This PC is a great deal for anyone on a budget and want a high-powered machine. I bought this computer a CompUSA for $600. The processor is a high-end AMD Athlon x2 4200 with AMD Live! Very fast CPU. 320 GB Hard Drive will never fill up, 1 GB RAM is very fast, and lightscribe.

But as always there are some downs. All of the pre-loaded software and links when you first turn on the machine is annoying, but it only takes a few minutes to remove everything. I also find HP's "Total Care Advisor" to be somewhat useless. Also the back of the machine is lacking a Parallel Port, for everyone who still has an ancient printer.

When I opened up the computer, I found that the extra optical drive bay would be really hard to get to if you ever wanted to expand there. I think there is also another bay for a hard drive. There is one available PCI-Express slot for maybe putting a nice graphics card in to up the gaming power. There are 4 total DIMMS for memory, but 2 are taken up by 512 sticks. You can expand up to 4 Gigs, but I don't see much reason to do that, unless you are doing some serious video editing or gaming.

There is an onboard GPU that is 128 MB dedicated, and the video RAM can go up to 319 MB, but the extra memory is allocated by Windows Vista, so I advise that when gaming, close all programs that are running, or it will run very sluggish.

The RealTek HD audio output provides up to 7.1 speakers, but we have our Harmon Kardon stereo speakers hooked up and they sound stellar.

The overall performance of the machine, speedwise, is quite good. It takes about 2-3 seconds to open Internet Explorer, and that's pretty fast in my estimation.

To sum up, great value, start-up programs kind of annoying, a lot of room for expansion, and mighty powerful CPU.

4 out of 5 stars Happy with computer..... Vista OS - Jury's still out.......2007-03-09

So far so good - worked perfectly right out of the box. It had drivers for my two current printers - one was 3 years old, the other about a year old. Accepted my 2 year old wireless network card without problem and accessed home network seamlessly. Therefore, getting functional was very quick and easy.

The only issue is the Vista operating system - I don't know if I'll be happy with it. For now the basics are pretty intuitive, but I'm a little frustrated with getting it configured for our use. Seems it's a little heavy handed on security precautions.
