Editorial Review:
Product Description
With a performance as inviting as its classical good looks, the Emerald, now in its second generation, is a truly refined speaker. Designed with a distinctly art-deco feel, the speakers from the new Emerald range are built into a real wood cabinet, producing a rich, warm sound, steeped in emotion. Although undisclosed by the appearance of the Emeralds, technology is used extensively in the manufacture. Complex computer modeling has been used in the design of the cabinets to minimize coloration, the woofer cones are constructed using the patented mineral loaded homopolymer plastic to damp unwanted resonances, whilst retaining the strength to keep bass accurate and dynamic. Finally, laser interferometry has been used to create a truly outstanding tweeter for the Emeralds. The end result is a classic amongst speakers - a dry acoustic character with a revealing and flawless transparency.
Amazon.com Review
Wharfedale's Emerald 93 is a jewel of a bookshelf speaker. Built by one of England's most celebrated manufacturers, the two-way speakers employ a pair of superb speaker cones as well as other key component parts for a sound best described as "musical." Their sound is impressive--open, warm, and natural--and consistently conveys the essence or "soul" of the music.

That said, the Emerald 93s are handsome, well-fashioned speakers. Both the rosewood and oak models are cased in gorgeous, real-wood veneer with black grilles. Just below and running parallel with the angular grille base runs a wedge carved into the cabinet itself. This subtle yet striking cosmetic touch sets the Emerald 93s apart from less fashion-conscious speakers.

But let's talk about what's inside those cabinets.

A 6-inch, mineral-loaded polymer woofer handles the bass frequencies and the critical midrange, where 80 percent of the music takes place. Wharfedale's quick-response woofer gets its rigidity from finely crushed stone, which Wharfedale presses into the polymer during the molding process. This outstanding driver crosses over to 1-inch, silk-dome high-frequency driver, certainly one of the sweetest tweeters we know of.

In addition to being a looker, the Emerald 93s boast a rigid cabinet that's free of resonant coloration. Both deep bass and speaker sensitivity (how loaded it sounds with a given voltage input) are enhanced by a rear-firing port, which means that the Emerald 93s require some distance from the rear wall (about two feet or so) to perform at its best. We also recommend a pair of sturdy, 24-inch-high stands to get the most from these speakers.

The Emerald 93s' sound is exquisite. Vocals are so present it's like having the singer in front of you. A grand piano, one of the hardest of all instruments to reproduce, is full and sonorous, with layers of complex harmonics and a gorgeous tone, while electric guitars ring with the texture and crunch of real life.

The Emerald 93s' bass sounds punchy and warm, reaching down to an honest 50 Hz with a beautiful roundness. Bowed acoustic basses growl, and drums rock with a sense of real weight behind them. And the tweeter is, again, a marvel--extended, detailed, and sweet.

What else is there to say? Wharfedale's Emerald 93s are remarkable speakers. They're also a remarkable value. If you truly love music and want to hear its subtlety, nuance, and bouquet of tone colors marvelously reproduced, these are speakers you'll cherish. --Wayne Garcia

Amazon.com Product Description

The easy-to-use HP m7750n Media Center PC is the complete home PC system that delivers more entertainment choices, and brings them together in one place with easy access from anywhere in the room. You can watch, record, and pause live TV programming as well as schedule the PC to record upcoming episodes or entire series. The built-in TV tuner (providing both standard NTSC and high-def ATSC transmission) and personal video recorder (PVR) let you watch, pause, rewind, and record live television--up to 240 hours on this 400 GB hard drive. An online Electronic Program Guide (EPG) lets you review the TV schedule and select individual episodes or entire series, so you can watch your favorite shows on your own time, at your own convenience. And you can easily burn TV shows and home video to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. LightScribe technology burns custom, silkscreen-quality labels and artwork directly onto LightScribe-enabled discs, right inside the drive.

This desktop is powered by the 2.6 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. A built-in drive bay fits an optional HP Personal Media Drive (PMD), for up to 500 GB of additional storage that you can carry away with you when you go (PMD not included). It also features 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE video card (with up to 256 MB of shared video memory), 15-in-1 memory card reader, up to 8 channels of surround sound output, and a remote control with up to 16 feet of range.

This desktop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Business, which has a new user interface, named Windows Aero, that makes it easy to navigate through the operating system and from application to application. For instance, Windows Aero helps you juggle multiple tasks at once by providing a three-dimensional, real-time, animated view of all your open applications and documents. Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 5000+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It outperforms the highest-performing AMD Athlon 64 4000+ single-core processor on multi-tasking benchmarks by up to 30 percent. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.

This 2.6 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

  • Hard Drive: The incredibly huge 400 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space--enough for storing up to 240 hours of television programming, a vast multimedia collection, or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory (2 x 1024 MB, PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a good start right out of the box, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. This desktop has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 1 GB), excellent for your multimedia needs today and tomorrow.
  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and optical mouse (both PS/2) and remote control.
Video & Audio
This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150LE graphics/video card with up to 256 MB of shared video memory (allocated from the system RAM). Nvidia's exclusive TurboCache technology allows direct rendering from the GPU to system memory by leveraging the bi-directional PCI Express bandwidth. The TurboCache Manager dynamically allocates memory for maximum system performance while intelligent software algorithms maximize application performance. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.

    Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
For expansion, this desktop features a drive bay that fits an optional HP Personal Media Drive--which enables you to add 500 GB of storage for your video and music libraries. It has three PCI expansion slots (one available), one PCI x16 Express slot (available), and the following external ports:

  • 6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 4 in rear)
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
  • Composite video, S-Video, and analog audio inputs
  • Headphone and microphone jacks
  • Audio output: digital audio out, surround sound speakers--rear, side, center (subwoofer)
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 15-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Pro/Duo/Pro Duo, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, XD Picture Card, RSMMC, MMC Mobile, MMC+
The following I/O ports are found on the back:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports
  • 1 FireWire
  • Video (VGA, composite, S-Video)
  • Audio output: digital audio out, surround sound speakers--rear, side, center (subwoofer)
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
It includes an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect to your favorite Wi-Fi hotspot.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars GREAT COMPUTER.......2007-05-19

Well I think I got a very good product for a very good price so I am happy for buying this pc thanks AMAZON.

    5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Machine!.......2007-04-10

HP has been right there when questions/problems needed answering. The 400GB hard drive is huge and with 2GB of RAM and AMD Dual core processor, really screams.

A problem early on (that I caused), HP over-nighted me materials I needed without delay. They're the very best in customer service in my experience I've ever had.

I might have taken 1/2 of a star off because there are too few PCI slots. I've never had this great a restriction in any PC I've owned.

Windows VISTA Home premium is smooth and very stable, but doesn't work with several applications I use many times daily. HP Support told me my Scanjet 3670 (which is more than 1 year old and thereby out of warranty) will not work with this system.

All things considered, this is a terrific computer and I'm pleased with its performance and HP's customer support.

5 out of 5 stars Great computer and value (after minor glitch).......2007-03-10

What's not to love with this powerhouse!!! Rather than pile on the superlatives let me address some points raised by another reviewer.

All delivery companies, including UPS, will leave your package if they have signed delivery instructions on file. Since we both work, and have left instructions with all the delivery companies, UPS left our computer at the front door. They will also leave it at a neighbor, provided you have your neighbors permission. We have also had UPS deliver packages to our work address (better get permission from your boss).

Before you order, make sure any tool/appliance is suitable for your special needs. Most people do not buy a computer just to watch TV.

After I hooked up everything (fast and easy to do with HP quick start guide) I turned it on expecting to be dazzled by the graphics on 20" LCD widescreen Samsung 206BW monitor. Much to my dismay, I got an error message saying the CPU fan had failed - and the system shut off. I tried to boot several times but got the same message.

I called HP Support. After about 10 minutes on hold I was able to explain the problem. Support said they were going to put a techie on the call. I waited on hold about 5 minutes. While I was waiting I opened up the side panel. Guess what I saw!!!

Apparently during shipping, a cable had worked itself into the fan, pinning down the blades and preventing it from spinning. I moved the cable, closed up the case, and turned it on. IT WORKED!

By the time the techie joined the call I was well into the initial setup. Support noted what had happened, thanked me for fixing the problem, chatted briefly, then we all happily went our separate ways. Total time on the phone about 30 minutes.

As the Start Guide says, the first time you turn it on, the computer sets up all the software, gets updates, and asks you some information. This whole process takes about 30 minutes, depending on additional software and your configuration.

WOW!!! Even double and triple WOWS!!! I am impressed! I've been in IT (programmer) for over 30 years, and writing web applications for nearly 10 years. The dual core is fast, 2 GBs of RAM virtually eliminate disk swapping.

Vista OS will take some getting used to; some things just don't work like they do in XP. But this old dog is learning new tricks, and I'm sure I'll soon be ripping and burning and crunching like an old pro.

I've had this about a week and I'm still discovering new delights. Many of the features I have not had time to use, but based on my experience so far, I am looking forward to using.

Since Vista is so new, there may be some applications that won't work properly, but do not let that stop you. Software companies are scrambling to keep up, and updates and new drivers are being delivered as we speak. So if you get an error message installing an application, contact them and/or Microsoft.

Vista notes when an application crashes, and sends information to Microsoft. I was surprised when a special driver was installed by Windows Update to satisfy a conflict an application had the night before. Somebody or something in Redmond heard my problem and solved it in 24 hours.

Would I buy this model again? YES!!!

Would I buy Vista again? Yes! It has some very impressive features, especially the graphics - This is the future trend of software.

I do love the 20" widescreen monitor. The only thing I would do differently is buy the 24" Samsung SyncMaster widescreen; bigger is better.

I have to go, should shut off the computer. Let's see ... Press Start...

1 out of 5 stars If I had but known ..........2007-03-07

Just a couple of things they don't tell you in the description:

The first is that it is delivered by UPS AND IT REQUIRES A SIGNATURE, and they don't deliver on Saturday or Sunday, and they only give you an eleven hour spread for the delivery time - between 8 AM and 7 PM. This means you are going to have to be home all day on a workday!

The second thing they don't tell you is there is no way to hook this so called MEDIA CENTER to get reception TO your television! Yes, there is two S-Video plugins and two composite video plugins but they are all for INPUT. I repeat; there is no S-Video OUT nor is there a composite video OUT.

What good is a MEDIA CENTER that will record TV, do stop-action TV and all those other cool things if you can't get a picture TO your television??

Another thing they don't tell you is that if you need help with this computer plan on being on hold for almost two hours and don't expect to speak to someone who's native language is English.

Other than that, this may be a good product. I don't have any idea as I was planning on hooking it to my television for output. I guess I just assumed too much. Somehow, I just thought that a computer supposedly built to manipulate television reception would just natural output to a television....

    5 out of 5 stars Really Impressed.......2007-02-06

So far I have been really impressed. really have not gone through it completely, but so far so good. BTW, my pc came with Vistas Home Premium and not business as stated in the ad.
