Amazon.com Product Description
The ultracompact, video-shielded Klipsch RSX-4 is designed to reproduce the main or surround channels in a high-performance satellite/subwoofer system or to stand alone in any indoor application requiring very small speakers of the highest quality. It boasts outstanding efficiency by utilizing a 1-inch titanium-dome compression driver coupled to Klipsch's new round MicroTractrix horn. This magnetically shielded speaker also employs an advanced 4-inch woofer to achieve remarkable sonic detail. The woofer is a long-throw unit powered by a unique neodymium motor structure. The cerametallic cone is lightweight with excellent rigidity, which dramatically reduces any resonance. As a result, the RSX-4 is capable of robust bass extending low enough for comfortable operation with today's built-in A/V preamp/processor and receiver crossovers.

The speaker's gracefully contoured, high-rigidity enclosure is small enough to fit wherever you need it to go. An integrated ball-joint pedestal stand with bottom keyholes makes it easy to place the RSX-4 on any convenient surface (walls included) and direct its sound into the listening area. The satellite's magnetic grille easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle, while sturdy five-way binding posts ensure secure connection to any type of cable.

Amazon.com Product Description

Easily mobile at just 6 pounds, the Toshiba Satellite A135-S4487 makes it easy to get your work done with a large, bright 15.4-inch widescreen LCD. The XGA-resolution screen (1280 x 800) permits side-by-side viewing of documents for increased productivity. It's also great for using as a media center, with Toshiba's unique Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. This notebook is powered by the 1.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. It provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance. It also offers 220 GB of total storage (from a dual 100/120 GB hard drive array), 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), dual-layer/multi-format DVD drive that also burns CDs, integrated tri-mode wireless connectivity (802.11a/b/g), and Intel GMA 950 video card with up to 256 MB of shared video RAM.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor has a 1.66 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

  • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
  • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
  • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
  • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: This notebook offers a total of 220 GB storage from a dual Serial ATA hard drive array--a primary 100 GB drive and a secondary 120 GB drive. It provides more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software and allows for a good-sized digital media library. These SATA hard drives also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a very good start for power users, and it offers a decently fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add up to 4 GB of RAM for worry-free handling graphics-intensive presentations and multiple open business productivity applications. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • DVD/CD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 4x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio
This Toshiba Satellite A105 has a 15.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 256 MB of shared video memory. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.

    Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This Toshiba Satellite has an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN, which is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader that's compatible with Secure Digital (including SDIO), MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card memory cards
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect to your favorite WiFi hotspot.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-05-13

I have had noproblems with this computer at all. I love it and I am so glad that I purchased it. I recommend buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Toshiba Notebook... So-so Windows Vista.......2007-05-03

This is my second Toshiba notebook, being the first a Satellite 2410 series buyed (gasp!) 4 years ago. I've always liked my first Toshiba because it never give me any problemas, it is reliable (even now) but time is cruel and it was time for a change.

In my search for a new notebook, I considered only Toshiba models and found that the A135-S4487 was the perfect combination of price and resources. I buyed it 3 weeks ago, and I'm happy with my choice. I've captured video from my home movies, only with the software included out-the-box and the speed of the system is very good too.

The only reason I'm giving "only" 4 stars for this notebook is Windows Vista. I know that it's a new operating system and because of that is prone to little fails, but Vista gave me a little headache over my
first weekend with the notebook!!... only thing I'm saying is please search on the internet for advice (mostly on hang-ups and the blue screen of death)... I mean, hey Toshiba guys!!, I trusted you've extensively checked your notebooks preloaded with Vista before putting them for sale!!.... Now it's everything ok, but not without a little suffering :)

3 out of 5 stars Don't get if you plan to install Windows XP.......2007-04-19

This is supposed to be a good computer for a good price. But if your plan is to install windows xp on it. Forget about it. Toshiba until now does not have the drivers for this computer for windows xp! If you think it is not important to have wi-fi, the Fn keys working but able to use WinXP... go for it!

3 out of 5 stars Solid value, but nothing spectacular.......2007-04-13

This is a good computer with a lot of features and high-end specs for the price, but it's not a *great* computer. I bought this to replace my old Toshiba Satellite M35, which conked out (video problem) after three years of very heavy use. I liked my old computer so much, I wanted to stick with Toshiba. But I must admit this one isn't quite as dreamy as my old one.

    Cons:

*Toshiba has made the screen super shiny, which is the worst change. What on earth was Toshiba thinking? On my old Toshiba, the screen was matte, and glare was never a problem. On this one, the glare is terrible. Worst of all, the maximum brightness has not been improved (a somewhat dim screen was one of my few complaints about my old Toshiba), so a glare screen will compound that problem. This issue alone has made me consider returning the computer.

*The manual warns that resting your hands on the palm rests for an extended period of time can result in burns. Huh? You can't rest on the palm rest? This is thoughtless engineering, pure and simple.

*The sound isn't as great as my old computer. Also, my old computer had slots in the lid for listening to music with the computer closed. It didn't sound as good as with the computer open, but it wasn't bad. With this one, the sound is very muffled when the lid is closed.

*The earphone and microphone jacks have been moved up to the front, which, to me, is in the way.

*The volume scroll is still on the front, which, again, is kind of inconvenient, but even worse now, the jacks are on a little outcrop right next to it, which makes the scroll kind of hard to get to.

*The volume scroll turns endlessly. In other words, you can't turn it all the way down. Say you're starting up your computer in a meeting or in bed or in some other place you don't want to be hearing all the chiming and beeping that goes along with startup. You can't scroll the volume down all the way first. It resets itself to a medium volume each time you turn on the computer, no matter where you had the volume before. It's baffling to me why they did this. You also have to turn a lot more to adjust the volume up or down, and it doesn't seem to increase/decrease smoothly. It's actually kind of difficult to get the volume adjusted to where I want it.

*The USB ports have been moved around, and to me, they are not as convenient. There are two on the right towards the front, one on the back left, and one towards the middle of the left (the one on the right towards the rear is what I miss).

*The fingerprint reader is a cool feature, but it's not quite ready for primetime. Even with very careful use, it does not consistently read my fingerprint. It is very far from being reliable enough to depend on exclusively. When it works, it's neat to be able to just scan your finger instead of typing a password, but when it doesn't work, you waste far more time than you've saved. In the tutorial, they show a finger being pulled straight across the scanner, like a box of Cheerios on a grocery-store scanner. But it works nothing like that. You have to press hard (uncomfortably so), and you have to scan all the way to the very tip, curving your finger up as it reaches the end. For a woman with anything but a close-cropped fingernail, this will be difficult, if not impossible.

*Those blinding blue indicator lights are alive and well and more numerous. Now the on/off switch has a one-inch-long blue band. You could land airplanes on this thing. Whenever I use my computer in a low-light setting, I have to put something over the lights, otherwise it's like driving with brights in your rearview mirror.

There's also a new light indicator (amber, for some reason) to show when the wireless switch is on. This might be handy, because some people complained that they accidentally turned off the wireless switch without noticing it. But I never had that problem, and I find the light to be annoying.

*Accessories from my old Toshiba (battery charger, battery) don't work with this one. I didn't really expect they would, but it would have been a nice, thoughtful thing for Toshiba to do.

*The plastic lid covering is pretty, but it does show fingerprints very dramatically, it attracts dust like a Swiffer, and it feels like it would crack or scratch very easily. I very much prefer the matte silver lid on my old Toshiba.

*This model makes a lot more noise than my old Toshiba. There is something running internally (it sounds like the fan, but it's not; I'm not sure what is is) that makes a continuous low-pitched noise. The fan also kicks in frequently. My old Toshiba was virtually silent, and the fan seldom came on.

*The keyboard is far too stiff and unresponsive. I'm a very accurate, fast typist, but I find that many letters get missed when I'm typing on this Toshiba. With time, I'm sure I'll adjust to pushing harder, but I wish this keyboard had the soft, accurate touch my old Toshiba had.

    Pros:

*Despite Toshiba's warnings about burning yourself, this model actually gets far less hot than my old one. The palm rests have yet to get too hot to touch. I think I'll leave the stickers on, though, because they are clearly helping insulate.

*For the price, you are unlikely to find a computer with a bigger hard drive than this.

*The position of the touchpad is better than on many other brands. On some, such as HP, I find it difficult to type without inadvertently moving the mouse because my hands contact the touchpad.

Overall this isn't a terrible computer, but Toshiba has lost my loyalty. I will look to other brands next time before considering what Toshiba has to offer.
