Design
The c417 sports a slim, sleek clamshell design with a large 128 x 160 color display with over 65,000 colors. A supplementary, 96 x 64 monochrome OLED screen on the front of the cover keeps you up to speed on time, date, battery and signal strength, and more. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side of the phone, while most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. There's also a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets, while the phone's charging port is placed on the bottom of the unit.

Calling Features
With a big 500-contact address book, the c417 is designed to hold all of your important calling information. The phone also features 40-chord polyphonic ringtones, and in addition to the built-in ringers, you can download additional ones from Cingular's MEdia Net service. A vibrate alert silently notifies you of incoming calls when you want to be discreet, and a handy speakerphone lets you talk hands-free or hold conference calls. Meanwhile, ringer and picture ID lets you assign photos and ringtones to callers.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
Powerful messaging and Internet capabilities are built into the c417. Support is provided for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound, and video via MMS messages. Instant messaging is also supported via the included AOL and Yahoo! messaging clients. There's even a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing if you opt for the MEdia Net service from Cingular. MEdia Net lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the c417 including a calculator, an alarm, a voice memo recorder, a to-do list, and a calendar.

Entertainment
The c417 takes pictures the way you want to take pictures. The phone allows you to choose from four different picture resolutions, and sports a digital zoom feature. And don't forget, the built-in self-timer allows you to get yourself into the picture. The c417 also allows you to set screensavers, themes, and wallpapers to suit your tastes. The phone is Java enabled, as well, meaning the phone supports games written on the Java platform.

The Samsung SGH-c417 weighs 2.86 ounces and measures 3.66 x 1.89 x 0.65 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 10 days of digital standby time. Good buy -- very few setbacks.......2007-02-28

I just bought the phone. It came today and I've been playing with it all day. I know people don't like how the buttons were set up because they're too flat. It's not that much different. If you've used a phone before and know the order of a numbers, you'll get used to it really quick.

The camera isn't that great of quality. I guess if you wanted a great camera phone, this wouldn't be it. This would be great for the random moments, not the moments you'd want to cherish forever.

I don't like the fact that the front screen does not dim out after a while. I've looking for ways in turning this off, but I just can't find them. I think it'd be a big waste in the battery. It doesn't stay full lit, though. It just doesn't have the backlight turned on. Still, after a couple of minutes, it should turn off. The front screen does remind me of Samsung's r225. It's just a simple high contrast display--and I like that. It gives me what I need. It does become annoying when you want to take pictures with the phone closed.

The center button opens the browser. I hate that -- it makes me mad. I used to have a Sony Ericsson and the center button opened the menu. That is how it should be. So far, I think I've opened the browser 10 times.

I like how the connecting ports are all covered up. I always used to get lint and dust in them on my old phones. Now there's a cover on the charging and headphone port. It also adds to the sleek design.

This really is a beautiful phone. It's nice and thin -- almost exactly the same size as the razor. It does have an external antenna, but it really isn't a problem. The antenna isn't thin, either, so you don't have to be afraid of breaking it. The gold is a nice color, but now I'm wishing I went with the red. The picture on Cingular's site made me believe it was a little darker (it's almost silver, actually), but I can live with this. (If you need to know, it's the same color as the pics on Amazon.) It's up to you, though.

The phone sounds perfect to me. I've made calls on it and heard clearly. The ringing volume can get loud if you need it to. Also, there's an option to have it vibrate for a while, and then ring. I REALLY like this for some reason, and I can see myself using it. And when it vibrates, it really does. My old phone (Sony Ericsson z500a) had a problem with vibrating and sometimes it just wouldn't. Every time I've gotten a call or txt on this one, it's alerted me. I'm only afraid that a teacher of mine or my boss might hear it vibrating.

The wallpapers and loaded ringtones aren't that great. There's only 4 or 5 loaded wallpapers on it and a handful of ringtones to choose from. If you like a regular ring, then don't worry, but if you like variety, be ready to shed some money for tones or a data cable. You could also record something, but that NEVER turns out good.

Other than these setbacks, this is a good phone. It's a thin phone, but I'm not afraid that I'm going to break it like the razor. The razor is slow with it's applications, but this phone is quick. When I tell it to open my phonebook, it doesn't question me and show me a loading screen--it just does it. The font is big (with no way to change it--besides changing the dialing number color from black to rainbow) and when you dial, it gives you big numbers. It comes with a bunch of little things that'd you need. Converter, which you will use if you go to Canada and you REALLY want to know how cold it is, stop watch, calculator, alarm, notes, world clock.

When the phone is open, you can change the volume by pressing the side left buttons, but not while it's closed. The only button that works on the outside when it is closed is the camera button. (If you press the left buttons when it is closed, it will light up the front screen. To use the camera button, you need to hold it down. Pressing it once will not light up the screen.) All the games are demos, but bejeweled is one of them. With the phone book, you can copy all to phone, but you can't copy all to sim. You'd have to manually go through your phonebook and do that.

I really don't know what else to say. I haven't had a chance to use the bluetooth (don't have it) or the speaker phone during a conversation. I can say that it is comfy in your hand and isn't irritating at your ear.

I would recommend this phone to someone, but I'd tell them these setbacks, first. If you're really picky with your phone on things like loaded features and things like that, then don't get it. But if you are looking for a quality phone that focuses on phone calls, then this will be a good buy for you.
