Amazon.com Hands-On Review

<blockquote><small>To keep your smartphone's applications up to date, and to optimize the performance of your device, you may need to perform firmware and/or software updates just as you would on your PC. To learn more about updates for your device, please visit Motorola's support site. Note that by clicking this link you will be leaving Amazon.com.</small></blockquote> Motorola's QWERTY keyboard equipped Q, formerly known as the RAZRberry in the rumor mills, might not exactly be the "BlackBerry killer" that many predicted, but it is certainly one of the most capable and user friendly smartphones available on the market today.</p>

Based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone platform, the Q picks up the best features from Microsoft's Smartphone edition of Windows Mobile while still offering a lot of PDA-like capability and screen real estate on its 65k color, 320x240 pixel display.</p> <table align=right width=250 cellpadding=10> <tr> <td> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/wireless/detail-page/B000MX2012-1.jpg">
<small><b>Sleek, small and oh, so powerful. See it in 3D.</b> <small></td></tr></table>

In terms of hardware features, the Q's right side 3-way scroll wheel and dedicated back buttons take center stage. These give the Q user fast BlackBerry-like scrolling with the ability to select an item or return to the prior screen--all with the user's thumb. Of course you can still do these same things the traditional way by using the 5-way direction pad and the back button that sits to its right. There's also a dedicated home key as well as the red and green call control keys.</p>

The Q's QWERTY keyboard is a bit stiff, but otherwise designed well. The dark keys serve double duty as the numeric keypad when the Option key (found left of the Z key) is used. The Option key can be locked on, as can the shift key on the opposite side of the keyboard. Along the bottom of the keyboard you'll find dedicated buttons for email, the 1.3-megapixel camera, and a dual-use key for the speaker-independent voice dialing system and speakerphone.</p>

When it comes to hot features, though, the Q's EV-DO 3G data capability tops the list. When used in an EV-DO coverage area, the Q user can expect to get wireless data rates that approach those enjoyed by home DSL users. When there is no EV-DO coverage available, the Q will fall back to the slower 1xRTT data network (roughly comparable to a 56Kbps modem). The Q can also connect to a desktop PC with a USB or Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth can also be used with mono and stereo headsets, as well as other devices like keyboards.</p> <table align=left width=300 cellpadding=10> <tr> <td align="left"> <img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/wireless/detail-page/B000MX2012-2.jpg" border=0 align=top>

<small><b>Get intimate with the Q's keyboard.</b></small> </font></td></tr> </table>

While WiFi wireless access would have been a welcomed feature, it would have only led to even more strain on the already overtaxed battery. The standard capacity battery is capable of a respectable 5.5 hours of continuous talk time, but realistically will only provide a day of solid use, especially if the Q user takes advantage of the BlackBerry-like push email support. The push system can keep your Q lock step in sync with your corporate or home email inbox without any user intervention required. On top of email synchronization, it can also be used to synchronize the Q's contacts, calendar entries, tasks and other items with your home or office copy of Microsoft Outlook. It is somewhat eerie how you can enter a new contact or appointment on the Q and have it show up moments later in Outlook--or the other way around.</p>

One of the great things about owning a smartphone is the ability to add 3rd party developed applications to the device. Since Windows Mobile 5.0 is quite popular, there are plenty such applications available both freely and for purchase. The Q has about 50MB of RAM for running applications, and a similar amount for storing data and the applications themselves. If you need more storage space, you can easily add a gigabyte or two by inserting a miniSD memory card into the Q's slot, located on the left edge of the device.</p>

The Motorola Q packs a lot of capability into a device that is only a half inch thick and weighs 4.3 ounces--considerably less than the competition. It comes highly recommended.</p>

<b>Pros:</b>
<ul>

  • One-handed use</li>
  • Thin and light</li>
  • EV-DO data</li> </ul></p>

    <b>Cons:</b>
    <ul>

  • Short standby battery life</li>
  • Stiff keyboard keys</li> </ul></p> <P> --Reviewed by Michael Oryl, editor in chief of www.MobileBurn.com

    5 out of 5 stars Great quality and fantastic experience.......2007-06-04

    This phone was an upgrade from my 2-year old Nokia 6600. When I place them together, the Nokia 6600 does seem bulkier. The Q is about half-inch wider and longer, but it is only half the thickness, which makes it look really cool when held in hand.

    I was concerned about the battery life before placing the order, but it turns out that the battery life is not bad at all! The stand-by time is over 3 days after the first charge, and I also talked for over an hour during that time. The battery begins to dissipate more quickly when I had heavy access to internet, but can't complain.

    The Q has similar bells and whistles as my 6600, but it is the Windows Mobile OS that makes it stand out. The internet experience is awesome! With Sprint Vision plan, real-time access to news, sports and webmails is very fast, 3-7 seconds a page in most cases. I also downloaded and installed Google Map, and found the search features are almost comparable to PC's Google Map. It will then be a temporary good solution before I can afford a GPS.

    Overall, I've been very happy with this phone and look forward to keeping it for another good two years.

    5 out of 5 stars Love mine!.......2007-05-26

    This is my first PDA type phone and I love it. It was between this and a Treo, but the Treo seemed too bulky (and pricey) for what I wanted. My battery life is pretty good, but then I charge it every night. My only real complaint would be that some webpages don't fully load. For example, I can view pictures but not text. I'm sure technology will eventually catch up and in a year or so things will be better than ever.

    2 out of 5 stars The Battery is terrible.......2007-05-15

    The phone is pretty good - good call quality, but the battery does not stay charged for even one business day and I don't talk on it that much. If I forget to charge it overnight it is so dead that it won't even boot up if it's plugged in until it is plugged in for a while. I am very disappointed in the battery life. The guys at the Sprint store told me it is just the way it is. I don't think I even get one hour of talk time and I hardly ever use the Internet.

    1 out of 5 stars Phone that doesn't work, support that isn't there........2007-05-10

    I purchased a Moto Q on the fifth of April. It worked fine for the first 10 days, and then it broke. The phone would no longer boot. The hard reset function did not work. I called Motorola, and they asked me to mail it in for repair. It was mailed on the 15th using second day US mail. They showed it as received on April the 23rd. I just received the replacement phone (05/09/07) of equal or greater value. Sprint cannot get the phone to activate, as the phone does not accept the ##number# code that is supposedly associated with the phone. After having spoken to 4 seperate Sprint personnel, in two department, they determined the phone is broken and told me to contact Motorola. I contacted Motorola and spoke to Yamil (ID8183) who told me the problem was with Sprint's activation code, and that they had no responsibility for phone activation. I asked him if I could send the phone in for repair, and he said that the phone likely had no defect, so their technicians would just re-package it and send it back to me. I asked him what I should do and he had no suggestions accept call Sprint.

    In essense, what Sprint and Motorola where telling me is that I just bought a 500 dollar paper weight that neither of them knows how to or was willing to fix. Finally my local Sprint store came to the rescue. I took the phone in to them, and after working on it for an hour (including tapping Motorola as a resource to fix it) they could not resolve the issue. So, they busted out a new one, activated right there, and handed it to me. The Sprint guys at the Redlands California store did what need to be done to support me as a customer. Motorola didn't.

    I love the features on the phone, just be aware that the phone's reliability seems questionable at best. I recommend researching some of the troubles people have had with it on the web before purchasing it. Make sure you religiously backup everything you put on the phone. I will never by a motorola again.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Tool For Staying in Touch with Email, News.......2007-04-23

    I use this more for staying up to date with enterprise/personal email and on that measure it's an enthusiastic 5! When I have the Q with me at work, the emails show up on my Q before they show up in my Outlook in box. It's a great tool to have with you when traveling. It certainly beats lugging the notebook around (who would have ever thought we'd say that?). I can't be more happy with my Q and (so far) with the performance of it on the Sprint network.
