"I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there's gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day."

So begin the trials and tribulations of the irascible Alexander, who has been earning the sympathy of readers since 1972. People of all ages have terrible, horrible days, and Alexander offers us the cranky commiseration we crave as well as a reminder that things may not be all that bad. As Alexander's day progresses, he faces a barrage of bummers worthy of a country- western song: getting smushed in the middle seat of the car, a dessertless lunch sack, a cavity at the dentist's office, stripeless sneakers, witnessing kissing on television, and being forced to sleep in railroad-train pajamas. He resolves several times to move to Australia.

Judith Viorst flawlessly and humorously captures a child's testy temperament, rendering Alexander sympathetic rather than whiny. Our hero's gum-styled hair and peevish countenance are artfully depicted by Ray Cruz's illustrations. An ALA Notable Book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a great antidote to bad days everywhere, sure to put a smile on even the crabbiest of faces. (Ages 5 to 9)

Book Description

Alexander knew it was going to be a terrible day when he woke up with gum in this hair.

And it got worse...

His best friend deserted him. There was no dessert in his lunch bag. And, on top of all that, there were lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV!

This handsome new edition of Judith Viorst's classic picture book is sure to charm readers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars A Family Favorite.......2007-06-29

Who can't identify with Alexander as he bumps into one disaster after another? Is there anyone who has not considered, on such a day, a move to "Australia"? Alexander is beset at every turn and is so comforting to children who must so often feel the vagaries of life. How nice to know that somewhere on the planet is another soul who has no control of events either. Alexander is a book the children never tire of hearing and I never tire of reading.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Children .......2007-06-26

This is not only one of the best children's books ever written, but it also has life lessons -- wittily presented -- for adults as well.
The phrase "even in Australia!" became our family's chorus -- the children and I chiming in together -- when something went wrong, and a reminder to keep things in perspective and in proportion.
Get this for the children in your life, but for yourself as well. The Tenth Good Thing About Barney

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-24

I think this is one of the best kids books I've read. It is warm, and funny. At the same time it reminds us that everyone has bad days!

I adore this book not only because it's an excellent children's book, but because it appeals to the child in all of us. Another such book is Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2. Make them available to your children.

4 out of 5 stars Many uses.......2007-05-16

A great read-aloud, and also great for fostering emotional competency, giving "permission" to have a lousy day and to be a grump about it and to know that it happens to everyone. My kids love it!

2 out of 5 stars Great lesson, poor choice in wording.......2007-05-02

I really liked this story with the life lesson at the end that everyone has really bad days sometimes. However, I don't like the fact that the word "hate" is used in the story. I was always taught that "hate" was a strong word and should not be used casually. I hope to raise my children with a similar understanding that the word "hate" should not be used lightly. I think the author could have used other words to convey the boy's feelings in the story.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish in 10 Minutes a Day.......2006-08-15

This text is either for the very beginning beginner or a good review for the person who has been away from Spanish for a time.
It is done in a logical manner and in workbook form. It has stickers for nouns and cutouts for flashcards of the important beginning vocabulary in the book. It is fun to do and quick to finish.

4 out of 5 stars A good Start .......2006-04-07

I have read almost all of the book. Along with the CDs I think the set would be very good for a beginner but not enough for adequate conversation. No conjugation rules mentioned. You have to be enrolled in a spanish teaching class to fill in the defecits that this set have. Overall I think my spanish improved alot from 0% spanish to 50% now, which is not bad to a beginner....

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product.......2006-02-24

We are a homeschooling family and we were looking for a good beginning Spanish program. This program was recommended to me by several people so I thought we would give it a try. My daughter and I are learning together and we are finding this program easy to use and alot of fun. I think it would be a great program for older elementary (my daughter is 14) - adult. The CDs are a must because they teach you the correct pronouncation for each word. The stickers are a great way to incorporate Spanish into your everyday life. Excellent program. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learning Spanish for educational purposes and for those who are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a traveler, Not for a class.......2005-08-12

I began using this as text for a class of mine, but quickly only used it as a supplement. You are to simply copy the words and say them in 10 minutes each day. It's a great theory, but very difficult to absorb any language through this method. The vocabulary is bent toward the traveler - what to pack, where's the restaurant, I'd like to order, that type of phrasing.

The color pictures make it seem like it might be aimed at a younger crowd, but the exercises were a bit stale for anyone under high school age.

Overall, this is a good crash course if you're about to leave for a week's vacation in a Spanish-speaking country. To learn how to truly communicate in Spanish, you need something more thorough on grammar points and practice. The fact that no CD comes with it also makes pronunciation a concern for the novice learner.

For the much younger child, Flip Flop Spanish is a great tool which comes with a CD.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been good.......2004-11-26

This is a way for people to learn spanish fast but the book goes through things very quickly so you will find that you either don't understand or forget thing easily. I only suggest this book to someone how just wants to travel to a country that speaks spanish for a week but not for people who are truly interested in learning to speak spanish fleuntly at a good level.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2007-05-22

As a novice to SEO, this book is excellent at walking you through all of the items and tools that one needs to implement a solid SEO plan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-12

I'am very pleased with this book. Definately one of the best books on the subject of SEO.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2007-05-09

As an SEO Consultant for a large design company, I often speak to people who have no idea what SEO is, let alone understand it's sometime tricky nuances. It was very nice to see a "beginner" oriented book that not only made things easy to understand, but touched on some of those tricky parts.

I've read a number of beginning SEO books, and this was by far the best one yet. You will be hard pressed to find information in this writing that will not be pertinent and right on point with search engine guidelines and proper SEO methods. This was very pleasing, and it's about time a beginner book was written to get others started correctly.

2 out of 5 stars Very Basic Beginners Manual.......2007-04-22

As a professional Web Developer, I'm always looking for expanding my skillset. Our company creates very search engine friendly websites, so we have already been doing most of what's in this book. The things we don't already do are actually outdated practices anyway. If you're an average website owner looking for a DIY solution, this will be adequate for you. If you know even a little about SEO already, it'll be like reading an ABC book. You can read it in a day & check off each chapter as 'been there, done that'.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't seem to work for themselves!.......2007-04-11

I searched for "seo tips" and neither of their two websites showed up in the top 20. Uh oh... if they can't make what they preach work for themselves, how can they help *you*, who might have paid for this book?

Book Description

From the PEN/Faulkner Award-winning author James Salter and his wife, Kay—amateur chefs and perfect hosts—here is a charming, beautifully illustrated tour de table: a food lover's companion that, with an entry for each day of the year, takes us from a Twelfth Night cake in January to a champagne dinner on New Year's Eve. Life Is Meals is rich with culinary wisdom, history, recipes, literary pleasures, and the authors' own memories of successes and catastrophes.

For instance:

• The menu on the Titanic on the fatal night

• Reflections on dining from Queen Victoria, JFK, Winnie-the-Pooh, Garrison Keillor, and many others

• The seductiveness of a velvety Brie or the perfect martini

• How to decide whom to invite to a dinner party—and whom not to

• John Irving's family recipe for meatballs; Balzac's love of coffee

• The greatest dinner ever given at the White House

• Where in Paris Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter had French onion soup at 4:00 a.m.

• How to cope with acts of God and man-made disasters in the kitchen

Sophisticated as well as practical, opinionated, and indispensable, Life Is Meals is a tribute to the glory of food and drink, and the joy of sharing them with others. "The meal is the emblem of civilization," the Salters observe. "What would one know of life as it should be lived, or nights as they should be spent, apart from meals?"

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Charming.......2007-05-11

I love reading cookbooks and cooking magazines so this book was a bit of a change of pace. But I enjoyed it immensely. I read it on vacation and shared with my husband some of the tidbits of history in the book. It is easy to read in short spurts. It has a little bit of everything. Recipes, history, anecdotes, menus. The writers did a very nice job.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Reading.......2007-04-19

This uniquely unclassifiable book is an utter delight. More than a cookbook, more than advice on how to entertain, more than a history of food and its preparation, it is both a memoir and veritable instruction manual about how to dine and live with style and gusto. Simultaneously worldly and sophisticated, casual and candid, every page offers a new treat. The illustrations are charming and perfectly complement the tone of the book. You'll want an extra copy to give to special friends.

2 out of 5 stars Too rich!.......2007-03-27

Although I did finish this book, and I found some of the ideas and information very interesting, I doubt this is a book I would ever thoroughly revisit. Some of the anecdotes, while obviously meant to be charming, disarming, and heartwarming, had the opposite effect, and made the authors seem pretentious. This did not feel like a collection of casual observations about food written by people who love it. Rather, it felt more like an affected assortment of entries written by finicky epicures. As an aside, I found the passages that he wrote much more enjoyable than hers. Unfortunately, she seems to have written the majority of the book.
Of course, this is only my opinion, but these authors have a very strong voice, and if you don't enjoy it, it will be a constant irritation throughout the book. I would recommend Ruth Reichl's books as an alternative for a food lover.
Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table
Comfort Me with Apples: More Adventures at the Table

5 out of 5 stars Simply, a masterpiece!.......2007-02-24

This book is a treasure. To read it is to be reminded of the joy of living, AND eating. - Exquisite in every way, one savors each page as one would savor a great wine or haute cuisine.

There is no book that I can think of which begs to be enjoyed as much as this one. It is informative and witty at the same time. The illustrations are works of art, and the Salters set new standards of writing for a work such as this.

God bless them and this book. They have enriched us all. A MUST BUY!

5 out of 5 stars "Life is Meals" a book to devour!.......2007-01-16

This was a delightful read. The recipes are marvelous, the stories most entertaining. It is a book you won't want to put down and you will refer to for a lifetime. The perfect hostess gift!!!

Inspired by Debra Frasier's enormously popular On the Day You Were Born, this charming photo journal invites families to celebrate the arrival of their loved one into the natural world. A star-spangled blue sky, crossed by a swath of sunshine yellow with gold birds, introduces the reader to "the very first day you arrived." Baby's picture and name go right in the middle of all the cheery yellow. Turn the page: "You were born on the round planet Earth. Was it day, or was it night?" is printed with another space for a picture and a line to write the date and time of birth against the backdrop of more starry sky with that old blue and green globe plopped in the middle and a figure of a child frolicking across the ocean. On another page, the jubilant child dances across a beach: "On the day you were born waves washed the beaches clean for your footprints. How little were your fingers? How tiny were your toes?"

By adding eight photographs and filling in a few details, parents can create a very special journal for their child, rejoicing together in all the natural wonders of the universe. Here is an ideal gift for the new parents with a vibrant connection to nature. --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

In simple words and radiant collages, Debra Frasier celebrates the natural miracles of the earth and extends an exuberant welcome to each member of our human family. Accompanied by a detailed glossary explaining such natural phenomena as gravity, tides, and migration, this is an unforgettable book. “A book filled with reverence for the natural order of the world and the place of the individual in it.”--School Library Journal

5 out of 5 stars Book is AMAZING, CD is so-so.......2007-05-15

I bought this for my son before he was born, and I read it to him all the time - and never with a dry eye! I always buy it as a baby gift for anyone I know who's having a baby of their own. However, unless you find this set for a good price, I might just get the book. My husband calls the CD "hippie music" and he's right - the music is a little, um, groovy and repetitive. Though if you have a sappy friend, get it - books like this and the Giving Tree always make me cry, and if I can have the CD finish the story for me when I get choked up, so much the better.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift.......2007-05-15

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-05-12

Wonderful, unique artwork and a great story. Makes a good baby shower gift.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-01-13

I love this book and give it to each grandchild. I usually do this on their 3rd birthday. The special part is reading it to them and expressing how wonderful it was on the day they were born.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Gift Book.......2007-01-10

I find that this book makes a wonderful gift for the newborn and family.
The illustrations are lovely and the sentiment is sincere. I give it often and always receive a positive response. Older children in the family are usually very intriqued by the pictures and phrases. I would recommend this book to anyone who asked me for a gift idea new baby, baby shower,as well as a baptism. Any of these would be appropriate occasions to give this book.
I cant speak to the CD..I haven't purchased it only the hardcover book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for age 2.......2007-06-27

Lots of pictures, few words, and little person's issues give this book strong appeal to be the one picked by the child to be read.

5 out of 5 stars A few words are enough.......2007-06-19

There's a scarcity of text in this book, and that's all it needs. The message is simple, and Henkes reflects that in his words and illustrations. As usual, his drawings are fantastic, conveying perfectly the message contained in the words - to be honest, this book could stand on its own with no text.

This one is a pleasure both for me and my 2-year-old daughter. She loves having me read it, and I enjoy it. Kevin Henkes has a magic touch, and it's on display again here.

5 out of 5 stars Even the Smallest Can Have a Good Day.......2007-06-02

Suffering problems, several small animals are having a bad day. Quiet events resolve their problems, but a little girl running to her mother is what changes the whole tenor of the day.

With a palette of browns, mostly muted, the flowing broad lines of the illustrations have the simplicity of woodcuts. The artist is a master of conveying emotions with small strokes. A short curved line can indicate either a smile or a worried eyebrow on an animal. On opposing pages the depictedcharming characters have their misadventures explained in large, soft brown letters on off-white pages. The easy-to-understand text, simple illustrations, and gentle tension of the book will capture
the interest of, but not threaten, toddlers. Such excellence of art and text for very young children is the work of a master.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Day.......2007-05-23

The Library of Congress summary cracks me up: "A bird, a fox, a dog and a squirrel overcome minor setbacks to have a very good day." It's a good thing Kevin Henkes, who has given us the verbose and precocious Lily, knows when to avoid phrases like "overcome minor setbacks."
With gorgeous chunky pictures and giant easy-to-read-from-a-mile-away text, Henkes has empowered young Readers to independently navigate this surprisingly uncheesy story of "things aren't always as bad as they seem." I mention surprisingly uncheesy because I am typically turned off by sweet and tender, especially if it's text a kid can read independently. There's something to be said for original and uncheesy.
Naturally broken into three parts, we first meet four troubled little animals. "It was a bad day ..." the story begins. "But then ..." like Life, sometimes we just need a different perpsective and a little patience to let us know that our troubles are soon resolved.
I love that the text gradually becomes more lengthy and the vocab. more challenging. It will reward the diligent Reader, like the troubled little animals, with a happy ending and a good day.

"Here is the book that Romeo would have given Juliet; Charlie Brown would have given Snoopy; and you can give to some very special friend" proclaims the back cover of this small, whimsical book. Written in 1965 by Sandol Stoddard Warburg, it still makes the perfect present for your best friend. Not just any run-of-the-mill best friend, though. This book is for the kind of friend who yells for you when you get lost in Grand Central Station or pretends to save you when you pretend to be drowning. Or, as Warburg puts it, "You know how to be silly / That's why I like you / Boy are you ever silly / I never met anybody sillier than me / till I met you." I Like You is simple and quirky, uses words like "snurkle," and is laden with delightful Maurice Sendak-style pen-and-ink illustrations of alligators dancing, lively children, mirth, and general goofiness. Do you need new answers to the question "How do I like thee?" I Like You is a great help for counting the ways.(All Ages)

5 out of 5 stars Says it all.......2007-05-15

I gave this to my husband on our wedding day as part of my gift to him. He was blown away by how simple it was, but how perfectly it said everything I wanted to tell him.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect romantic gift.......2007-05-03

I was looking for a Valentine's Day gift for my girlfriend, and stumbled across this little gem. It's really not for kids at all, though they can have fun with it and get the superficial message. Adults realize that it's really talking about why we love each other. It does it in a whimsical way, completely devoid of Hallmark treacle and cloying mush, and makes you realize all the small yet critical ways that the other person meshes with you.

I am marrying my now-fiancee next week; in the ten years I've known her, this is her favorite gift. She keeps it on the nightstand and occasionally we'll quote from it or even leaf through it together.

5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2007-03-13

This book was touching and entertaining. The sentiment is timeless, even though there are a few phrases/words that I am sure meant something else in 1965 when the book was written. I would recommend this book for a loved one or good friend. Even though the title is "I Like You" the feeling is I Love You. The illustrations are cute and the overall feeling is whimsical.

5 out of 5 stars So cute, Great gift.......2007-03-08

This is a sweet little anytime gift or would be perfect for an anniversary/Valentine gift. It's sweet yet silly. Any girl would love it and it's not too sappy to give to a guy either.

5 out of 5 stars lasted 40+ years.......2007-02-09

My then boyfriend - now my husband of 39 years - gave me this book. My daughters, now grown with their own families, have given it their beloveds. The sweetest, gentlest, most caring book ever written. Its sentiments have held steadfast all these years.

Book Description

The Blue Day Book is a wonderful collection of amusing, poignant animal photos and inspirational text designed to lift the spirits of anyone who's got the blues. No one who has lips will be able to read it without smiling; it's guaranteed. The fact is, we all have our bad days-they are an intrinsic part of being human. As prescribed by The Blue Day Book in its delightful photo and text messages, the solution is to see each incident in perspective, recognize that our feelings of failure and loss are not unique, acknowledge the absurdities of our existence, and glory in the potential we all have. In less than 100 sentences, The Blue Day Book conveys this message with great compassion and humor. Its vehicle is charming black-and-white photographs of animals that are strangely human and completely free of judgment or pretension. The humble marriage of easy text and beautiful images takes the reader through the entire evolution of a blue day, examines what it feels like, what causes it, and how to get over it.

Bradley captures every emotion and feeling and soothes the reader. The photos help us along as well. After purchasing this book and "A Teaspoon of Courage" I read them and sent copies to my sister.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Day Book.......2007-01-21

The Blue Day Book as the title and cover art implies gives some tips on how one can get over the blues when having a really bad day. All of the photographs are black and white and show animals in poses that either evoke an emotion or show the animal having his own bad day.

I have purchased this for my daughter and as gifts. It is a wonderful board book, which invites interaction between momma and baby with plenty of playful kisses!!!

4 out of 5 stars cute.......2007-06-08

My almost 2 year old daughter likes this book but not as much as "Daddy Hugs 123" by the same author...she LOVES that one. This one is cute though and she does like all the kisses she gets when she reads it, not that she doesnt get enough ALL day :-)

5 out of 5 stars Very Sweet Book!.......2007-05-12

I love reading this book to my 20 month old daughter - she gets to learn about counting, family, and body parts and we get to snuggle and kiss the whole way through.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2007-04-06

This is the cutest book ever! I kiss my baby all ten ways while reading it to him :)

4 out of 5 stars Adorable!.......2007-03-22

This book is so cute! I bought it for my son, who is due in June, and I can't wait to kiss his soft skin after each page! The illustrations are colorful and I love how it shows not just baby with Mommy, but also with other family members, including a pet cat and Grandma. I know this will be read weekly when my little baby finally arrives.

5 out of 5 stars botany in several months.......2007-03-16

This book lays out the general approach through which a beginner can make sense of the vast amount of information he or she faces in learning botany. I found it most helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-07-19

Take a really dry subject and turn it into a book I couldn't put down!

Tom Elpel's style is right on target and his book is turning into a constant companion for my outings!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for intuitive understanding of the subject.......2006-04-09

In the opening chapter, this book presents a wonderful simplified story of the evolution of plants, from a single cell to modern complex flowers. Both children and adults can gain a unique, intuitive understanding of this process from this explanation. My compliments to the author. He describes each plant family with interesting anecdotes and high quality line drawings. It's the first plant book whose lack of photographs didn't matter. Great tips for identifying families and individual plants have helped me enormously. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Teaches the patterns method of plant identification.......2004-12-09

Any interested in plant identification should consider Botany In A Day: The Patterns Method Of Plant Identification as an important guide. Thomas Elpel (Director of Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School, Pony, Montana) deftly teaches the patterns method of plant identification, providing a method for learning about groupings of plants based on the idea that related plants have similar patterns for identification, and similar uses. Black and white line drawings accompany descriptions of different plant families and their identification processes.
