Book Description

Eagerly anticipated by her legions of fans, this sixth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander saga is a masterpiece of historical fiction from one of the most popular authors of our time.

Since the initial publication of Outlander fifteen years ago, Diana Gabaldon’s New York Times bestselling saga has won the hearts of readers the world over — and sold more than twelve million books. Now, A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the extraordinary story of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century wife, Claire.

The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.

With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence — with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie’s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.

The book was great. The same great characters Diana Gabaldon brought to life.Lots of twists and turns. My only problem was I got so involved in it I read it in three days and then it was finished.

5 out of 5 stars Breath of Snow and Ashes.......2007-06-28

This is the sixth book in the Outlander series. If you haven't read the first five books, you will probably be lost most of the time. Go back and start with "Outlander" and be totally capitavited by Jamie, Claire and the rest. It is a marvelous story and very well written. 18th century Scotland will become more real to you than 2007. It has been ages since a book has grabbed me like these have. I can't put them down and am re-reading them all.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough!.......2007-06-27

I've read all the books in the Outlander series. It's like coming home to your own family when you pick up this story. I let myself read only a half hour a day so I can savor the story and the people and the writing!
I've only enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver as much as this writer.
The characters are all too human and not romanticized. It's a pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander).......2007-06-16

I long awaited this book and I really liked it until the end. I was so disapointed with the ending-what do they mean oh yea for 5 books I am a laird and a farmer but wait now I choose to be a printer? I hope that another book comes out to give a better ending-I miss the Fraser family.

3 out of 5 stars Outlander series.......2007-06-14

Diana Gabaldon is by far the best Author I have come across. She takes you on a journey that you never what to stop. A truly great Author and book. Megan Sutherland - Newcastle, Australia

"Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood," writes Frank McCourt in Angela's Ashes. "Worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." Welcome, then, to the pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930 to recent Irish immigrants Malachy and Angela McCourt, Frank grew up in Limerick after his parents returned to Ireland because of poor prospects in America. It turns out that prospects weren't so great back in the old country either--not with Malachy for a father. A chronically unemployed and nearly unemployable alcoholic, he appears to be the model on which many of our more insulting cliches about drunken Irish manhood are based. Mix in abject poverty and frequent death and illness and you have all the makings of a truly difficult early life. Fortunately, in McCourt's able hands it also has all the makings for a compelling memoir.

Book Description

"When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood."

So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish immigrants and raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank's mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank's father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy -- exasperating, irresponsible and beguiling -- does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Frank lives for his father's tales of Cuchulain, who saved Ireland, and of the Angel on the Seventh Step, who brings his mother babies.

Perhaps it is story that accounts for Frank's survival. Wearing rags for diapers, begging a pig's head for Christmas dinner and gathering coal from the roadside to light a fire, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual cruelty of relatives and neighbors -- yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance and remarkable forgiveness.

Angela's Ashes, imbued on every page with Frank McCourt's astounding humor and compassion, is a glorious book that bears all the marks of a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2007-06-14

I read this book a several years ago and didn't want to finish it, it was so good. So imagine my delight listening to the author, "Frankie," telling the story, singing the songs, changing his voice to suit the character and not saying, "Chapter Three . . . etc."!!! The CDs just continue, one into the next, and it's almost like having access to a controlled substance! Wonderful stuff!!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-05-29

I really can't say much more - it was just an outstanding story in every way. The sadness of McCourt's childhood losses, deprivation and poverty took me to the depths of sympathetic grief, but then his perseverence and triumphs provided great inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Angel's Ashes.......2007-05-24

I was given a audio copy of this book, I wasn't sure if it was something I would enjoy but I ended up loving the story. I love that the story was narrated by Frank McCourt himself with his Irish accent. The fact that you can feel his feelings as he reads his own story it makes it so real. I could almost see him at times on the lane he lived on. I felt for him and everything he want through but I love his perseverance to make it even after his near death experiences. He still went on to make something of himself. I am looking forward to "Tis"

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the CDs: it's a must..........2007-05-12

...even if you have read the book, it's a wonderful experience to hear Frank McCourt tell the story himself. Unless you really don't have the time or inclination, do yourself a favor and buy (or borrow) the unabridged version (12 CDs). It really is a delight and privilege to listen to McCourt telling HIS story. One gets so much more insight into the mood of each event whether it be heartbreaking, frustrating or funny. I cannot speak highly enough of the book, and even more highly of the audio book. Some books are just worth hearing - this is one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!!!.......2007-04-11

I thought this was an amazing memoir that really shows the reader that there are so many things in our present day lives that we take for granted, while there are so many people all around us that barely have enough to survive. Frank McCourt tells the reader about his own very scarce childhood in Ireland. He retells how he lived as a little child and eventually grew up into a man by making sure that his family was provided for as best he could provide as a teenager. As he grows into a man he begins to realize how important his contributions are to his starving family.

In this very personal recollection Frank McCourt shows the reader true pain and suffering. He really brings you into the situation and makes you feel the cold and the damp. Although this is such a heart-wrenching story this is by far one of the best books I have read recently.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty For Ashes: Receiving Emotional Healing.......2007-05-17

This book is a benefit to anyone regardless of their history. Personally, I have had a emotional, trama filled life until God got a hold of me, but this book helps tie in God's Word an apply it to real life situations.

4 out of 5 stars A place for healing to begin.......2007-05-10

Joyce tells her story in a manner that is bold, courageous, and transparent. She holds nothing back; both her strengths and her shortcomings are displayed on the pages of Beauty for Ashes. This book helped me take a good look at myself and to then focus on the nature and promises of God. It helped me at a time when I was very ill and had faced many losses. (Author, With Great Mercy.)

    5 out of 5 stars Living Proof.......2007-04-12

God brought this book into my life at just the right time. In reading this book I've finally been able to face the abuse of my past and start the road to recovery and healing. The Holy Spirit has moved in my life in an amazing way as a result of Joyce Meyer's teachings. I've been able to come to terms with horrible emotional pain and am experiencing the freedom of forgiveness towards myself and others. Through the wisdom I've gained I've already broken off a dysfunctional relationship and am growing stronger everyday in Christ. I now realize that my pain is my past and doesn't have to dictate my life now or in the future. I am free, I am whole, I am God's precious child and I am loved unconditionally by my Heavenly Father.

Joyce Meyer is offers very practical information. No fancy words or super spiritual mumbo jumbo that makes you feel like you can't apply these principles in your life. She makes sense, and she's been through it too.

I recommend this book for ANYONE who has endured any type of abuse: sexual, physical, emotional or verbal. Those memories, feelings and thoughts don't have to hold you in bondage any longer. Shame, guilt, rejection, sadness, depression, lonliness....you can allow the Holy Spirit to break these strongholds over your life.

    I know...because I am living proof.

    5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2007-04-07

Just within the first few pages, I feel an awesome sense of relief that what I am experiencing is the awesome Healing Power of The Holy Spirit through Joyce Meyer. He has used her as a vessel in many ways to guide me through my recovery.

5 out of 5 stars So truthfully blunt and what we need........2007-03-13

Since reading this book its like my soul has opened up.

I already knew a lot of the stuff she talks about but I never actualy accepted what I believe if that makes any since?

I like the way she is blunt and to the point but still says it in love and kindness instead of in judgementalism and legalistic abuse like many other christian speakers have done. Joyce said it like it is and said it in love and truthfullness.

As a female sexual abuse surviver I am more receptive to counceling from a female because Im often uncomfortable or creeped out by males. I would not have received the teachings of a male on this subject very well so this book by a female auther was just right for me.

Now I have come a long ways. Not just because of this book but because of God and my willness to do right. I could now better receive counceling from a male if I had to. Healing is great, it opens up so many more doors in life!

Joyce Meyer is a sexual abuser surviver also so she understands whats its like therefor she is better able to help those who have had abuse. This book is not just for those who have been sexualy abused but for those who have been in all kinds of abuse. I think this book would even be helpful for those lucky ones who have not had any kind of abuse.

I cannot highly enough recommend either the exhibit or any of the accompanying materials: books, poster, etc. We waited to see this for 2 years, until it went to CA.
I bought the full exhibition catalogue, the DVD of the 60 minute film and two posters and are extremely happy with everything. Everyone we show them to is excited and fascinated by the pictures and the artist.
I can't imagine being disappointed at all.

4 out of 5 stars The peripatetic mission of global unity.......2006-01-21

The Nomadic Museum, a facility constructed onsite in various locales (now in Santa Monica, CA) out of boxcars, cartons, and pipes is in itself an artwork and the peripatetic museum houses some wispy photographs by Gregory Colbert of moments of world observation that in context are strangely moving. The object is to bring the spirit of mankind into a space outside the usual exhibition venues and in doing so it becomes an experience for the people.

The catalogue that accompanies this show is equally impressive in its conception. No two books are alike in that they are created from handmade Italian paper and bound in a cover made from unique paper from Nepal. The photographs reproduced well in the catalogue languish from being reductions of the oversized images form the exhibition, but the flavor is there. Images of robed children and adults, animals both alone and in tandem with humans, bits and pieces of atmosphere form a journeyman's eye take on a significance that surpasses the original works.

The catalogue for the exhibition is pricey due tot he one of a kind quality of presentation. But for those who want to forgo the expense, there is also a version of the images (paperback with 48 pages as opposed to the 232 pages of this volume) available through this site. If you are unable to experience the exhibition (for that is truly what the exhibition is about) then this art book form of the catalogue is a substantive memento of a unique artistic experience. 5 out of 5 stars An incredible creation.......2005-10-01

I have collected photographic books over the past 30 years. This ranks among the top 3 books in my collection. It is simply stunning in its construction and in the uniqueness. The photographs are not only visually impressive but they simply speak to your soul. It has become quickly one of my favorite items to view. Strongly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A spectacularly beautiful book.......2005-08-05

This is one of the most moving books I have ever been blessed to put my eyeballs on. The images are haunting, poignant, irresistable, and inexpressibly beautiful. Their presentation in handmade italian paper, with the cover made from Nepalese paper, is breathtaking. I saw the exhibit in New York City, and would travel the six and a half hours (each way) by bus just to see this exhibit again. Absent my ability to do that, this beautiful little book will feed my heart and soul for years to come. Sure it is expensive. How often can you nourish your soul with beauty as compelling, as spiritual, as moving, as transcendant as this? It is worth every penny.

    3 out of 5 stars NICE ATLAS, CUT-THROAT PRICE.......2003-03-30

The biggest obstacle in the way of this beautifully illustrated atlas is its rather unreasonable price-tag. Its publisher, (and authors), did overlook the fact that there are lots of moderately priced equivalents out there in the market.
Nevertheless, anyone who goes ahead and purchase this atlas will appreciate its versatile accomplishments. It is very practical, and included high resolution photographs and micrographs.
"Atlas of Human Parasitology" has a unique organization, which enabled it to provide comprehensive laboratory information. Every specimen it portrayed was labelled and analyzed in details. There is complementary taxonomical description in each case. This is a well-compiled atlas, but I still maintain that its price is a great barrier.

5 out of 5 stars A very good bench atlas.......2001-09-09

I use this book on the bench in the microbiology department and I find the clarity and amount of photos extreemly useful. The other good features are the lifecycles and the methods present within the book. The book is sturdily bound and printed on high quality paper I would recomend this book to any laboratory, or person interested in parasitology.

1 out of 5 stars The cheaper edicion is horrible.......2005-07-07

I bought theWheeler's Dental Anatomy, Physiology and Occlusion thinking that I was buying a pretty new edicion of a book with a CD and color pictures. What I recieved at home was an old book with horrible black and white pictures and an awful redaction. I don't know how newest edition is, but I am shure that this old one is almost not a text book.

5 out of 5 stars What a Dental Anatomy Book Should Not Be Without .......2005-06-14

Unfortunately some of the reviewers are steeped in subjective reality and probably the users and promoters of another dental anatomy text. In a period of evidence based dental education and practice, a book without much of a refernce base is outdated; a book with out a CD is outdated; a book without a good index is hardly useful; a book without the latest information on dental anatomy is outdated; and a book without facts to build on is no book at all.
Wheeler's 8th edition has none of these deficiences.

1 out of 5 stars Wheeler is no Netter!.......2005-01-29

This book is wordy and lacks organization. It is full of awkward sentences, rambling paragraphs and has no sense of continuity. The diagrams are not labeled, of low quality and seemingly outdated. There are much better anatomy references out there and I suggest looking into the other literature. Wheeler's text simply demonstrates the need for a Frank Netter of sorts- someone who can do for Oral Anatomy what Dr. Netter did for Gross Anatomy. I'm actually considering writing my own text one day so that future students will be able to spend more time focusing on anatomy rather than the minutia and distractions that this book is full of. If you need to learn Oral Anatomy this is not the book that will help.

3 out of 5 stars Unnecessary and Disorganized.......2005-01-23

Wheeler's Dental Anatomy, Physiology and Occlusion
    by Major M. Ash

It is a good book with wealth of informations but also with lots of unnecessary details/ facts. One needs to wade through complete text material before discarding all extra material, a real difficult task for a first time learner of dental anatomy especially occlusion. Some of the previous criticisms are genuine. Yet this is the only book of its kind in the market. May be one of us (dentists) should embark upon the task of writing a better monologue/ text along with clear illustrations on dental anatomy, physiology and occlusion?

    3 out of 5 stars Wheeler's Dental Anatomy.......2004-06-10

Dental anatomy is a tough subject to learn. The human dentition varies from person to person and from race to race. If you truly want to learn dental anatomy a text book by itself is not enough. Use models, typodonts, extracted teeth, and your own patients to further your understanding. You might have to purchase such items by yourself. You have to gain knowledge through experience. This book (previous edition, old exams, and dental decks) helped me to achieve a 99 percentile on NDBE Part I. I can't believe the lack of professionalism from the previous reviewers. They are an embarrassment to the profession of dentistry. Who cares if you are #2 in the class, too bad you are not #1 (Then we can take you seriously!). I would recommend this book only as a supplement to the learning of dental anatomy. You can not learn all there is about dentistry from a text book! Dental school only gives you the basics.

    Book Description

Mathematicians solve equations, or try to. But sometimes the solutions are not as interesting as the beautiful symmetric patterns that lead to them. Written in a friendly style for a general audience, Fearless Symmetry is the first popular math book to discuss these elegant and mysterious patterns and the ingenious techniques mathematicians use to uncover them.

Hidden symmetries were first discovered nearly two hundred years ago by French mathematician Évariste Galois. They have been used extensively in the oldest and largest branch of mathematics--number theory--for such diverse applications as acoustics, radar, and codes and ciphers. They have also been employed in the study of Fibonacci numbers and to attack well-known problems such as Fermat's Last Theorem, Pythagorean Triples, and the ever-elusive Riemann Hypothesis. Mathematicians are still devising techniques for teasing out these mysterious patterns, and their uses are limited only by the imagination.

The first popular book to address representation theory and reciprocity laws, Fearless Symmetry focuses on how mathematicians solve equations and prove theorems. It discusses rules of math and why they are just as important as those in any games one might play. The book starts with basic properties of integers and permutations and reaches current research in number theory. Along the way, it takes delightful historical and philosophical digressions. Required reading for all math buffs, the book will appeal to anyone curious about popular mathematics and its myriad contributions to everyday life.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2007-06-27

This is a very good introduction to arithmetic that everyone wanting to be initiated in this important branch of mathematics should read.

The authors achieved something remarkable: they were able to communicate with accuracy the deepest concepts of arithmetic without the boring style of many mathematics textbooks. The book is very engaging, with nice reflections about the nature of mathematical thought, as well as the motivations behind the concepts.

The authors managed to have a gradual build up of difficulty of topics all the way
to the proof of Fermat's last Theorem. Unlike other introductory texts that let you down
because in their effort to be more engaging, end up too elementary, this one is perfectly balanced. I will also recommend the "Calculus Gallery" as a second outstanding book introducing Analysis.

It would be great if other branches of mathematics like mathematical physics, algebra, mathematical informatics etc had the privilege of such well balanced and insightful introductions.

    Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Rare - a well written book about math .......2007-05-30

Unlike most math books, Fearless symmetry is well written. Key concepts from prior chapters are reemphasized in subsequent chapters so readers are less likely to get lost. This is the first book on groups and representation theory that made clear sense to me. I can see where galois therory is going and now have an understanding of the basic form of the proof of Fermat's last theorem.

1 out of 5 stars Definition Dump from Freshman Abstract Algebra Course.......2007-05-16

The book is simply a compilation of definitions from a second rate textbook for Abstract Algebra 101 pasted together with high-five chit-chat from the mathematics-is-really-neat school of math edutainment. There are only a handful of illustrations in the book, none of which have anything to do with symmetry or patterns of numbers. The book Number Theory in Science and Communication: With Applications in Cryptography, Physics, Digital Information, Computing, and Self-Similarity by M.R.Schroeder is a much better choice for the subject.

4 out of 5 stars From zero to terse in 100 pages.......2007-05-14

This books starts off elementary beyond belief. This book begins with almost painfully long and thorough expositions of undergraduate mathematics, including linear algebra, group theory, and number theory. Suddenly the book takes a turn for the more complicated and quickly loses it's friendliness. While the material becomes more interesting and enjoyable, more details are left unmentioned, concepts left un-fleshed out, and examples are sparse. The material presented in this book was magnificently selected and the organization of the vast amount was admirable. However, the later chapters lacked in the quality of writing I was growing to appreciate from the two authors. I highly recommend any undergraduate mathematics or similar major to purchase this book. A semester of abstract will be useful, and a semester of number theory an added bonus. I would like to refute the claim that this book is enjoyable for non-math readers. Further, any math grad would be bored to tears by this book.

3 out of 5 stars Too much, too fast.......2007-03-15

The authors aim to reveal the role of Galois groups in modern number theory. "Groups" are mathematical descriptions of the patterns and symmetries of objects or mathematical equations. (Hence the reference to symmetry and patterns in the book's title.) Galois groups are used at the forefront of number theory research: they were used to prove Fermat's last theorem regarding Pythagoras's theorem of right triangles.

The book introduces the reader to the rudiments of groups, modular arithmetic, fields, varieties, the law of quadratic reciprocity, matrices, elliptic curves, and representations. Using these basic concepts, the authors show how the absolute Galois group of Qalg (the field of algebraic numbers) is used in contemporary research into the theory of polynomial equations.

Unfortunately this book is overambitious. It repeats the same mistake that every college professor makes: Typically, a professor belabors the rudiments of a subject; but then, as the course nears its midpoint, he realizes that he's running out of time, and the pace accelerates from a slow trot to a full gallop. Essential concepts are vaguely defined; e.g., Frobenius element (pp. 178-9) and unramified prime (p. 184). Towards the end of the book, concepts are introduced without definition; e.g., Fourier coefficients (p. 236), weight of a modular form (p. 246), conductor (p. 246), deformation (p. 252), complete noetherian local ring (p. 253). One of the phrases that's repeated most often is that some concept "is beyond the scope of this book."

Curious college grads -- even those with some exposure to abstract algebra -- will become hopelessly lost after Chapter 16. Graduate math students will be bored by the early chapters and will be left unsatisfied by the sketchy presentation of the later chapters. Grad' students should try Hellegouarch's "Invitation to the Mathematics of Fermat-Wiles".
