Book Description
The Battle of Trafalgar, 21st October 1805, is a now legendary day in the great age of fighting sail. It proved one of the most strategically significant victories of all time and set the seal on British supremacy at sea which lasted until the age of air power. At Trafalgar, England's hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, vanquished the combined naval might of France and Spain, and destroyed Napoleon's fleet so decisively that there was no question of continuing the war at sea. Bloody and confused, 60 great line-of-battle warships, carrying English, American, Irish, Spanish and French seamen fought for many hours amidst choking fumes, fire and shot, cannon balls and flying splinters, below and above decks. Around 8,500 men died or were severely wounded. Towards its end, Nelson famously met his death on the quarterdeck of the Victory.

Book Description
The story of the sinking of the great liner Titanic has been told countless times since that fateful night on April 14, 1912, by authors and film producers alike, but no accounts are as graphic or revealing as those from people who were actually there. Through survivors' tales and contemporary newspaper reports from both sides of the Atlantic, The Mammoth Book of the Titanic strips away the Hollywood gloss and tells the real story of the unsinkable vessel. Here are eyewitness accounts full of details that range from poignant to humorous as they follow the Titanic, stage by stage, from its glorious launch in Belfast to the somber sea burial services of those who perished on her first and only voyage.Customer Reviews:
Annoying.......2004-01-18
The bits I did enjoy in this book was the middle section. If you want to hear every single little detail about how the Titanic was built, how much each little item of cutlery cost, then read it. If I was to read this again, I would skip maybe the first 40 pages. The latter section of the book, is mainly the trial thing after the Titanic sinking. The first part is OK, with all the witnesses accounts of the sinking, but then it starts to review it all, and it's so dull!
Also with this book, there are a LOT of press cuttings - with the majority being very repetitive. The most interesting in this are the survivor's stories of what happened before and happened after the Titanic sank. There are a lot of glaring inconsistencies during these reports, some of which are exaggerated so much, that they're almost the style of a Hollywood blockbuster (hmmmmmmmmmm). It's quite funny when you read these survivor's accounts, especially one after the other (the accounts are ordered as to what lifeboat the survivor's got off on ie. all the boats on boat 15 are all grouped together). Obviously some of the survivors would have been deeply shocked after this tragedy, but some of them are so overly exaggerated, it's actually hilarious.
A good book to have if you're a Titanic fan. If you start getting bored, skip to the chapter. Would save a lot of time!
