Customer Reviews:
Fun For Kids.......2005-10-16
This tape is well orchestrated and narrated. My first grade class loves to read the book and listen at the same time. I recommend it!
very pleased.......2005-07-25
I am so happy I bought this book on tape. My daughter is very entertained with it. We commute together every day. She really enjoys the story about the little girl with the sign on her door. It is actually pretty funny. I would recommend it to anyone!!!
"Please don't go, we'll eat you up, we love you so!".......2003-01-29
I personally never liked Sendak's WTWTA. Or In the Night Kitchen. Or Chicken Soup with Rice. Or anything ever illustrated or written by him. So, I'm not a fan. Got it?
But WOW, was I ever wrong. I just didn't get it before, but listening to Tammy Grimes narrate and with the addition of Herr Mozart, it's like being transported into what must have been a fascinating mind who could write so well for children.
Buy this CD for your 4 year old + child with imagination to spare and he'll be begging for it. It's become a TREAT 'round these parts.
Even as adults, it's still amazing to me and my siblings.......2002-07-23
My siblings and I listened to this wonderful cassette as children and to this day treasure it. We have passed it's wonders onto our own young relatives and soon to our own children. It will stay with you forever for the words of Maurice Sendak make your imagination take flight and the voice of Tammy Grimes is so captivating; the best I have ever heard these fabulous stories read! The addition of the music of Mozart truly inspires the mind of children and adults alike.
A Wonderful Reading by Tammy Grimes.......2000-03-03
The Sendak stories read by Tammy Grimes capture the spirit and fun of the text and pictures without "talking down" to children. My kids have loved it from age 18 months to 7 (and counting). A wonderful interpretation of wonderful stories.

What lies along the highway, just out of sight? How about behind that building? Or under the street? Most of us muse idly about such things as we take our walks or drive our cars, but only a few go further and explore the secret histories of the places where we live. Landscape historian John R. Stilgoe is one of these intrepid explorers; for years he has taught Harvard students to open their senses to the created environment we share, to gently dissect our neighborhoods and public spaces for the knowledge hidden in plain sight. In Outside Lies Magic, he lets us all in on these wonderful secrets.
Guiding us on tracks laid by utility and railroad companies, showing us the hidden territory of postal systems, Stilgoe reminds us that important frontiers lie invisible in our backyards and side streets, waiting for our attention. Though more interested in showing us how to see than telling us what there is to see, his descriptions of power-line right-of-ways, alley-side entrances, and hobo jungles provide compelling incentive for the reader to take his advice to heart and start looking around and asking questions of the community. If you think it's important to "think locally," Outside Lies Magic is an outstanding training manual. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Outside Lies Magic is a book about the acute observation of ordinary things, about becoming aware in everyday places, about seeing in utterly new ways, about enriching your life unexpectedly.
For more than 20 years, John R. Stilgoe has developed and practiced the art of exploring the everyday world around us, where so much lies hidden just beneath the surface, offering uncommon knowledge if we but know what to look for. In this remarkable book, Stilgoe inspires us to become explorers on our own–on foot or on bicycle–and by so doing to reap the benefits of escaping, even temporarily, the traps of our programmed lives.
"Exploration encourages creativity, serendipity, invention," he writes. And while sharing his insights on how to explore, Stilgoe provides a fascinating pocket history of the American landscape, as striking in its originality as it is revealing. Stilgoe dissects our visual surroundings; his observations will transform the way you see everything. Through his eyes, an abandoned railroad line is redolent of history and future promise; front lawns recall our agrarian past; vacant lots hold cathedrals of potential.
From the electrical grid overhead to fences, malls, and main streets, Stilgoe offers a fresh understanding of the links and fractures in our society. After reading Outside Lies Magic, your world will never look the same again.
Customer Reviews:
the magic of the ordinary.......2007-01-14
This book is the concentrated essence of a life's work. It shows us that connection is still possible in this disconnected age. It shows us that America's history is not captive in printed pages and tv documentaries, but lives all around in the building and in the pulling down, in the shiny new and in the rusted.
Stilgoe does not illuminate the unremarkable, instead he reflects the light that he sees emanating from it. A remarkable achievement. A remarkable book. Highly recommended.
disappointing.......2005-10-07
Starting with the good, this book has a lot of research that I found interesting. It is one of my favorite ideas for a book and maybe Stilgoe will rewrite it and make it as awesome as it should have been.
Now for the not so good. Unfortunately I wouldn't have been able to read past the first chapter if this book wasn't recommended to me in the Practical Spying Handbook. I admit I had high hopes. I thought this book would be about what I enjoy most in life, wandering around. And somehow it was and still incredibly disappointing. I was able to read the whole thing, but haven't recommended it to a single friend because it is written in an insulting tone. Maybe Stilgoe can blame the editor for not laying down the law, don't insult the reader, they are the only ones listening.
I was also annoyed how often the logic of "general people do general things, specific people do specific things" was violated. Stilgoe keep talking about the "explorer" or "bicyclist". I assumed he was more often referring to himself. The "explorer", a general term, did specific things like prefer to drink coke. I wouldn't have minded one bit if he just came out and said that is what he did, but that's not how it was written.
My recommendation for the rewrite of this book is to make it more like Folk Song U.S.A. by John and Alan Lomax, which tells great stories with a lot of historical facts. Outside Lies Magic could really uses a little more adventure. If Stilgoe decided to write another book and could combine the Lomax style with his research and ideas of our present world I would be interested. But life is short and unless you read fast, I wouldn't recommend reading Outside Lie Magic.
187 pages of romantic drudgery.......2005-09-09
This book just seems to go on and on about all the little things we seem to miss in this electronic era that we live in, at face value this does have some truth to it, I myself was intrigued by the concept. But right from the very beginning you realize that these are things that are worth forgetting about. The book seems as if it was written for the specific interests of an autistic child.
I don't care about the why the grass grows the way it does on the interstate freeway and fail to see why anyone else would either.
Fascinating and Enervating.......2005-02-04
Possibly the most fascinating book I have read since Carl Sagan's "The Dragons of Eden". How often do you read a book that makes you want to get up off your chair (perhaps taking the book with you if you haven't finished yet) and wander off for outside adventures with its tantalizing accounts of what you will find in your neighborhood and town, and their outlying areas?!
Stilgoe draws us out into the "real world" page by page in this exploration of the modern world around us, its intriguing history of urban and rural constructions, and what it all means. A great book especially in that once you have read it, it continues giving to you as you take what you have learned from it and go further into the everyday world with it.
Talking about this book practically makes me jump up and down with excitement over the possibilities. No, wait -- it's LITERAL! I am, in fact, jumping up and down.
Quick, wonderful read - filled with wonder!.......2003-10-19
A fantastic little book that will remind you of wonder, make you wonder at the world around you, and help you stop ignoring the variety and patterns to which we've become numb.

Awesome Unforgettable.......2005-11-22
The reason I'm even looking up this book is because it's the only book that I remember by title as reading in elementary school. I read this book probably 33 years ago. I barely remember the premise, but the above reviewer above has the story right.
Just know that this book is an excellent adventure, and exporation of culture for an inquisitive 4-6 grader. I am going to find it, and read again at age 41 soon.
Again, sorry to not go through the plot...... boy lives underground or something in a river system within the earth... boy gets out of his "River territory" and starts to traverse the underwater landscapes... boy meets many interesting cultures, boy wants to return to his people to tell them of the life outside. Way cool!!
Great read aloud for a world cultures curriculum........1998-09-06
As an avid reader and a fifth grade teacher, I found this book to be intriguing. The main character travels through a number of societies as he explores Earth. Ms. Steele made each exploration of a culture interesting because she included the reader by describing the items before naming them. As I read, I envisioned my students trying to figure out what the items were before the items were named in the book. I plan to begin my school year with this book as a read aloud (I got this idea from an exceptional teacher I worked with this summer!) to introduce my students to aspects of world cultures.

Great Sci-fi starter - wonderful memories.......2000-02-21
I read a friend's copy of this book when I was in early grade school and I have been searching for a copy ever since. It's been more that twenty years but I still remember the images from the book: the destroyed city, the frightened children, the hope for the future. At least now I know the author's name and my search will be a little easier! Thanks Amazon!
Mystical revelations disguised as kids' sci-fi.......1999-05-17
This ain't "Witch World!" "Outside", by Andre Norton, tells how a return to nature and the mysticism of Nature Religion could turn around the dead-end journey of our increasing reliance on technology too complex for all but a few to understand. Many of the images are derived from traditional Wicca -- the Black Man who is also the Fool and also the Wise One and who leads his followers to freedom is only the foremost among them. In many ways this book is like a zen koan -- the puzzle or joke that has no straight answer, meditation on which leads to illumination. That there are so few copies available is a great pity -- it should be widely read by mystics, ecologists, and urban planners.
Leaves a lasting impression..........1998-09-29
I first read this young adult book when I was 7. It was my first taste of Science Fiction and 23 years later I still remember it! It is set on a world where everyone lives in a huge domed city which is full of broken machines that no one remembers how to fix. People live in gangs where anyone in their twenties is considered an "old". They suvive by scavenging out of ancient stores. Whole areas of the city are abandoned. Food is running out, and the oxygen makers are breaking down. And children are following a mysterious rhyming man and vanishing. The heroine of the story is a young girl, a "little", who longs to see what is outside the dome, even though "olds" say everything is dead. So she follows the rhyming man...
This story of a future Earth is a bit scary for young readers, but is very haunting and thought provoking for more mature kids. This story is one that many adults would do well to read as well. It may very well be our own future!!

Book Description
In Outside Magic, this poet answers difficult questions about love and politics, about our public selves and domestic spaces and that answers are not always what we expect.
Customer Reviews:
Vivid, insightful poetry collection.......2003-09-06
Leznoff's second poetry collection shows growth and renewal from his previous, the excellent Why We Go To Zoos. Outside Magic is an eclectic mix of quiet reflective poems, offbeat humor, eroticism and charged political works. There is a rare, authentic emotion in his poems on youth and growing up (Leznoff is a high school teacher), fatherhood and love. The poet uses a fresh, stimulating array of voices to woo us, cajole us, nudge us to awareness. Experimental, playful and wise - highly recommended.

Fabulous book for children's imaginations.......2003-03-19
Like the previous reviewer, I too grew up with this book and cherished it. It fueled my imagination endlessly. The binding of my copy is completely worn and I thought I would try to find a better copy to share with my own kids. I'd love to see this book reprinted. It is truly timeless!
Fuels the Imagination.......1999-11-26
This is the best children's book I have ever read! The story line is great--very heatwarming, but the best part of the book is the illustrations. Transparent sheets are inserted every other page so that when you turn them one way, you see the inside of a building, and when you turn them back, you see only the outside of the same building. I remember spending many happy hours flipping back and forth, imagining the lives of the many characters drawn on each page. This is an excellent book to let your imagination run away with. It is so good, I remeber it vividly even though I am all grown up now!
