(CALL ME - DAVID OR AMY) I just love 'em!
Best birthday gift ever!.......2007-05-26
I purchased this book as a gift for a crazy friend of mine and, after reading it, decided to get a copy for my brother-in-law, and my partner, too. Amy Sedaris' comments are witty, insightful, and most importantly, very funny; it's almost like she has wiretapped your inner thoughts and picked out all of your twisted neuroses to share with the public at large. A friend commented that every time she reads the book, she feels that Amy's looking over her shoulder and taking notes on all the crazy little thoughts that are going through her head. So if you are looking for the perfect gift to get for a friend who loves to laugh and enjoyed watching "Strangers with Candy", your search is over. Pick up a copy of this book, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

A good read.......2007-05-13
I would rate this book higher if I wanted to be a player or whatever.
There's a lot in here that's useful for someone like myself who's just kinda shy and would like to meet new people - but ultimately I don't like all of the strategising - don't get me wrong, I may wake up one day and realize that maybe it's really necessary in today's world.
The truth is I haven't really had a lot of problems attracting attention but I haven't had any practice going out and "picking up". Unfortunately, my last breakup is accompanied by the fact that I no longer have the convenience of large numbers of classmates to interact with means that meeting someone is a little tougher now.
A great guide for seduction........2007-05-09
"The Layguide" really has it all together, as far as "lay guides" go. There are lists of things to do, to not do and how to act towards women that can inevitablly get you an "in". The real issue of the book, and issue of most guys wanting to date more, is the issue of having or not having money and/or looks. These things, according to the "Layguide" won't matter as long as you apply yourself. I can relate to that, as most guys can. While perusing Amazon, this book came highly recommended, along with Get Laid Now! The Man's Guide to Picking Up Women and Casual Sex. I'm glad I had the chance to find both of these books.
Thoughts on The Layguide by Tony Clinke.......2007-05-06
Although I believe 100 percent that Mr. Clinke is himself an exceptional PUA, he lacks proportional talent in writing.
The book lacks structure and at times is very inconsistent. One minute it's "get her phone number" and then it's "never ask for the number, let her give it to you" and then it's "never give her yours" and so on. The book is full of little rules for behavior, that A. often contradict a previous rule, and B. are painfully vague and generalized. In the end, the book is just a messy pile scattered ideas that places no focus on the fundamental issues, leaving out all of subconscious things and subtleties that truly determine how women feel about you. Needless to say, it does not live up to its silly and excessive title, which promises the world but more than likely will just set the reader back even farther in the game. After reading it, he will most likely say to himself "wow, if i can't get laid after reading this book, then there's really no hope for me at all". Let's keep in mind, this book is the thoughts and experiences of one man (and not much of a literary man) whose personal successes are the culmination of his unique qualities... not that of the general population. Find your own way, reader, instead of reading this sloppy guide which will more than anything confuse, and possibly hurt your chances with the opposite sex.
More Fun Than Anything.......2007-04-08
This is a pretty good book. It is more fun than most of the books in the pua genre, not taking itself too serious. The advice is pretty general and can be found all over the Internet. It doesn't get in-depth like other books do. It does have some good laughs here and there. I think this book is better for guys in their late years of high school and early years of college than guys older than that. Also read The Professional Bachelor Dating Guide - How to Exploit Her Inner Psycho, which is for a more mature audience and has some more in-depth, good advice, as well as God Is a Woman: Dating Disasters, which is very good on all levels.
Alpha Summation.......2007-04-03
One of 100's of "How To" guides - but in this volume the reader will find a composite and detailed summation of most of the basic information on the subject available.
Clink, although accomplished in his own right, gives credit where credit is due. In fact, if one has read Neil Strauss' THE GAME - a lot of the names will be familiar. I found this book practical and entertaining, and pretty detailed. There's many schools of thought out there on the art of the pickup, and Clink touches on most of them. The more I read on the subject, and the more I practice the gambits, the more it boils down to being a confident male. But a lot of the information contained herein will enable the reader to build that confidence with the knowledge he acquires - or better said, be able to fake it till you make it.

Book Description
Architecture for Humanity is a grassroots nonprofit organization that seeks architectural solutions to humanitarian crises. Through design-build programs, competitions, educational forums, and partnerships with community and relief organizations, the all-volunteer group creates opportunities for architects and designers from around the world to help communities in need. Since it was founded in 1999, Architecture for Humanity has provided critical design support on a number of projects, including mine clearance programs and playground building in the Balkans; earthquake recovery in Bam, Iran; and the reconstruction of Kirinda, Sri Lanka, in the wake of the devastating tsunami of December 2004. At the university level, architecture and design programs worldwide have used AFH's competitions and design criteria as a model for semester-long projects. Elementary and high-school students have also benefited from their design initiatives through after-school workshops--just one of the many ways that AFH helps to foster public appreciation for the ways in which architecture and design can improve lives. Through its many initiatives, Architecture for Humanity has been privileged to learn about and collaborate with a wide range of architects and designers who demonstrate that where resources and expertise are scarce, innovative, sustainable, and collaborative design can make a difference. These are the projects that rarely make the cover of design magazines, and all too often go unbuilt. Design Like You Give a Damn represents a compilation of these projects. The first book to bring the best of humanitarian design to the printed page, Design Like You Give a Damn showcases a selection of approximately 60 projects from the past decade and includes narrative descriptions of how each project came to life, along with detailed, full-bleed four-color photographs as well as other illustrations and architectural drawings. Also included are statistics spreads, interviews with architects, designers' quotes, and an introduction and essay by Architecture for Humanity's co-founders, Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr.

Great for a Designers Library.......2007-05-26
This book is a great addition to any designers library, skimming over a few different projects that are displayed after reading the first few chapters to get the background story is best. There are many projects that can help get over designers block when you need a break at 4 oclock in the morning.
Excellent book........2007-02-13
This book is a great read that is more fun than fiction with really interesting material about some inspirational projects.

I feel this book is what many designers, who have a special sensibility for the urgent problem of global housing, have been waiting for. I'm eager to see a second, third and many more editions. Congratulations to the editors.
inspiring & challenging.......2007-01-09
a very important collection of different archtitecture and design projects that are not about glam and luxury
(quite the opposite actually), all extremely relevant in this unsteady world that we live in.

Book Description
Turn back your biological clock. A breakthrough book for men--as much fun to read as it is persuasive--Younger Next Year draws on the very latest science of aging to show how men 50 or older can become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten years, and continue to live like fifty-year-olds until well into their eighties. To enjoy life and be stronger, healthier, and more alert. To stave off 70% of the normal decay associated with aging (weakness, sore joints, apathy), and to eliminate over 50% of all illness and potential injuries. This is the real thing, a program that will work for anyone who decides to apply himself to "Harry's Rules."
Harry is Henry S. Lodge, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine and preventive healthcare. Chris Crowley is Harry's 70-year-old patient who's stronger today (and skiing better) than when he was 40. Together, in alternating chapters that are lively, sometimes outspoken, and always utterly convincing, they spell out Harry's Rules and the science behind them. The rules are deceptively simple: Exercise Six Days a Week. Eat What You Know You Should. Connect to Other People and Commit to Feeling Passionate About Something. The science, simplified and demystified, ranges from the molecular biology of growth and decay to how our bodies and minds evolved (and why they fare so poorly in our sedentary, all-feast no-famine culture). The result is nothing less than a paradigm shift in our view of aging.
Welcome to the next third of your life--train for it, and you'll have a ball.

Some warnings.......2007-06-05
In many ways, this book is important, and I recommend reading it. It contains some valuable insights I've not seen treated before, such as Lodge's physiological hypotheses concerning the balance between bodily decay and repair, which he posits as a lifelong ballet that determines who lives, who dies, and when. Crowley's contributions, however, are deeply troubling. As a macho 70-year-old, obviously proud of his athletic prowess, he continually recommends athletic activities that are unlikely to appeal to most women or to more than about 15% of the male population that enjoys and excels at sports, or that wants to develop some "abs and pecs of death." He gives some other very bad advice as well, which you can read about on my website, [...]
An excellent book for major lifestyle issues........2007-05-20
As a practicing physician, I strongly agree with the main points made in this book, namely, the need for frequent, aerobic excercise and the importance of eating the right foods. The strong points of this book are its humorous, easy-to-read style, and the emphasis on the fact that exercise and what we eat will not just make us feel better and look younger, but will really help us to live longer. The authors provide ample factual material to bolster their case, and then outline in detail what you have to do to get on board, in terms of the types and amount of excercise, and details about the right foods. I have read several books on health and aging, and this one is probably the best. I don't agree with the underlying world view of the authors, which is decidedly evolutionary, but the basic tenets of the book are certainly valid. The book should inspire you to take better care of your body and to live a longer, healthier, and happier life. There is plently of helpful information in this book to help anyone who is serious about doing this. We only have one body, so why not take care of it?
Eye Opener.......2007-05-16
Author brought to light many things about aging. Specifically that your body either decays or grows daily. You control it!
What did you do with my husband?.......2007-05-14
I have been trying for years to get my husband interested in exercise and eating better. I gave him this book just before he went on a trip and he actually read it. He is now a changed person - he rides his bike regularly and purchased a heart monitor. This weekend he bought a set of weights and starting this week he is going to my personal trainer for three sessions to get a schedule he can follow at home. I saw him the other day rereading sections of the book. Nothing has worked to motivate him until he read this book! Thanks so much to the authors.
A book for the ages and the ageless.......2007-04-05
I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Lodge speak at a conference I attended. His presentation of the "Younger Next Year" lifestyle was both informative from his medical perspective and hilarious from co-author and self-appointed Guinea pig Chris Crowley's perspective. I was given a copy of the book which I am glad to say I read. The format of the book is unique in that every chapter switches between the doctor and the patient. From why you should follow the doctor's orders to an insightful and humorous look at what happens when you do. While I enjoyed the reasoning for living better, I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter to read about Chris' personal experiences. I believe the health benefits addressed in the book are so important that I give the book as a birthday gift to all my clients who are age 50 and older.

The average person's attention span lasts about 30 seconds. That means first and immediate impressions count, and big. In this modern-day update of Dale Carnegie's classic How to Win Friends and Influence People, former fashion photographer Nicholas Boothman instructs you in how to mold those 30 seconds to your greatest advantage and connect with others at business and social functions.
Boothman, now a lecturer and licensed master practitioner of neurolinguistic programming (the art and science of how the brain affects human connections), says that the key to making others like you quickly lies in establishing a rapport: you have to find out what you have in common or, if you seemingly have nothing in common, purposely try to become like the other person for a short time. He then goes on to offer simple techniques for getting a rapport going: adopt a positive attitude; make sure your words, tone, and gestures are all saying the same thing; synchronize your attitude and body movements to those of another person's (which makes the person feel comfortable with you--although he or she may not know why); and ask lots of open-ended questions. Boothman also describes how to figure out a stranger's favored sense for receiving information about the world--some rely on visual cues, others on auditory or kinesthetic (touch) input--and use it to your best advantage.
If discovering how to connect with others is the secret to business and life success, as Boothman contends, then employing the strategies in this book will make you instantly likeable and give you a leg up on the competition. --Nancy Monson
Book Description
Whether selling, managing, negotiating, planning, collaborating, pitching, instructing-or on your knees with a marriage proposal-the secret of success is based on connecting with other people. Now that connection is infinitely easier to make through Nicholas Boothman's program of rapport by design.
HOW TO MAKE PEOPLE LIKE YOU IN 90 SECONDS OR LESS is the work of a master of Neuro-Linguistic Programming whose career is teaching corporations and groups the secrets of successful face-to-face communication. Aimed at establishing rapport-that stage between meeting and communicating-HOW TO MAKE PEOPLE LIKE YOU focuses on the concept of synchrony. It shows how to synchronize attitude, synchronize body language, and synchronize voice tone so that you instantly and imperceptibly become someone the other person likes. Reinforcing these easy-to-learn skills is knowing how to read the other person's sensory preferences-most of us are visual, some are kinesthetic, and a minority are auditory. So when you say "I see what you mean" to a visual person, you're really speaking his language. Along the way the book covers attitude, nervousness, words that open a conversation and words that shut it down, compliments, eye cues, the magic of opposites attracting, and more. It's how to make the best of the most important 90 seconds in any relationship, business or personal.
Customer Reviews:
This is NOT Based on Science.......2007-01-17
I thought this book was based on scientific research, but it is part of a body of knowledge termed Neurolinguistic Programming. It comes from New Age beliefs and has been hailed by some as "junk" science. Many people have marketed these teachings, such as this book, to come up with a pop-psychology that sells.
The upside of this book is that it is very entertaining. It is very upbeat and fun, and it sure seems like the magic bullet to cure all of your social awkwardness! But beware, you might just end up looking like a goober. One recent character on the Office used the a technique in the book called "mirroring" to make people like him better. It made for good prime-time comedy.
If you want to be a better friend, then read the book of Proverbs in the Bible. There you will find a more lasting and proven way of building your character.
You can read more about Neuro Linguistic Programming at Wikipedia.
Teen Shyness Overcome.......2006-08-08
My 16 year old son has always been shy. I gave my son this book to read over the summer to see if it could help him overcome some of his shyness before entering his junior year in high school. Overnight, this book changed his life. Everytime he practiced a new skill his self confidence grew. Everyone is commenting on the change in him. I have purchased extra copies of this book to give to other kids who are ready to gain confidence in themselves; to feel comfortable enough with themselves to meet new people and feel comfortable with old friends. Over the years I have tried teaching my son some of the skills in this book, but until my son read the book himself he just didn't get it. Now he does. He is the happy kid I have always known him to be. He is constantly smiling now and rushes to meet life head on. I highly recommend this book to teens and adults looking for a simple answer on how to meet people and make them like you in 90 seconds or less.
helpful.......2006-04-20
I found this book really interesting and helpful in approaching people in particular to meeting new people and building a rapport. In some areas such as body language and congruency in delivering communication it overlapped with my training in social work, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to meet people in everyday situations. If you have a background in social work or counselling chances are these are skills you already possess, great to recommend to clients though.
Reviews by Nan Kilar and Bobby Miller.......2006-03-28
Okay, so everyone is writing how-to books. Why? They sell. Why? Because we know we could be better than we are and most of us want that to happen. Boothman's book is a plus in any library. He tells what to do and what not to do when meeting friend or foe. With the usual hello or go to hell out of the way, he makes good suggestions about how to build natural rapport. My favorite part of the book is how to get along with a bully. The bottom line is that with just a little practice you can have complete strangers saying, "There's something about this person I really like." Success! Since I'm considered one of America's most controversial authors, that's a very difficult thing for me to accomplish even on my good days. So if this book helped me make a few friends, just think what it can do for you.

"Here is the book that Romeo would have given Juliet; Charlie Brown would have given Snoopy; and you can give to some very special friend" proclaims the back cover of this small, whimsical book. Written in 1965 by Sandol Stoddard Warburg, it still makes the perfect present for your best friend. Not just any run-of-the-mill best friend, though. This book is for the kind of friend who yells for you when you get lost in Grand Central Station or pretends to save you when you pretend to be drowning. Or, as Warburg puts it, "You know how to be silly / That's why I like you / Boy are you ever silly / I never met anybody sillier than me / till I met you." I Like You is simple and quirky, uses words like "snurkle," and is laden with delightful Maurice Sendak-style pen-and-ink illustrations of alligators dancing, lively children, mirth, and general goofiness. Do you need new answers to the question "How do I like thee?" I Like You is a great help for counting the ways.(All Ages)

Says it all.......2007-05-15
I gave this to my husband on our wedding day as part of my gift to him. He was blown away by how simple it was, but how perfectly it said everything I wanted to tell him.
The perfect romantic gift.......2007-05-03
I was looking for a Valentine's Day gift for my girlfriend, and stumbled across this little gem. It's really not for kids at all, though they can have fun with it and get the superficial message. Adults realize that it's really talking about why we love each other. It does it in a whimsical way, completely devoid of Hallmark treacle and cloying mush, and makes you realize all the small yet critical ways that the other person meshes with you.
I am marrying my now-fiancee next week; in the ten years I've known her, this is her favorite gift. She keeps it on the nightstand and occasionally we'll quote from it or even leaf through it together.
Touching.......2007-03-13
This book was touching and entertaining. The sentiment is timeless, even though there are a few phrases/words that I am sure meant something else in 1965 when the book was written. I would recommend this book for a loved one or good friend. Even though the title is "I Like You" the feeling is I Love You. The illustrations are cute and the overall feeling is whimsical.
So cute, Great gift.......2007-03-08
This is a sweet little anytime gift or would be perfect for an anniversary/Valentine gift. It's sweet yet silly. Any girl would love it and it's not too sappy to give to a guy either.

My then boyfriend - now my husband of 39 years - gave me this book. My daughters, now grown with their own families, have given it their beloveds. The sweetest, gentlest, most caring book ever written. Its sentiments have held steadfast all these years.

What Kind of Love Talk Are We Talking About?.......2007-06-14
This book includes some very helpful grids for helping spouses ( or friends - or enemies!) to understand each other. It would have rated higher with me if it had emphasized more the attitude of a servant spirit to which God calls His people, and the distinctive commands to the wife and the husband. The Excellent Wife: A Biblical Perspective
Love Talk Book.......2006-12-22
I bought this book in hopes to find more knowledge about how to communicate better, however I soon discovered that the book coincides with a workbook. Every chapter describes scenarios/experiences that the authors went through but is followed by "please see the workbook" to find out on how to communicate better. So buy the workbook if you want to get the full use of this book as well as reap the benefits in your relationship.
On the upside the book does have some good examples of what types of communication styles there are. I hoped this is helpful.
Excellent Guide to Enriching Communication.......2005-10-15
I am still working through the book but it has been an excellent guide to improving communication skills at all levels.
Deep Wisdom Practically Explained and Applied.......2005-07-17
"Love Talk" is a very practical book that is also very deep. What a rare combination. Far too often we find deep books that are vague and impractical or how-to manuals that are shallow and unbiblical. "Love Talk," as the authors accurately label it, is "a deep yet simple plan full of new insights that will revolutionize communication in love relationships."
Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott help couples to go deep by identifying their fear factor (a catchy and helpful phrase)--a soul issue necessary to expose for soul talk by soul mates. They then help couples to go simple (but not simplistically so) by helping husbands and wives to determine their communication styles.
They also help couples to go deep by exposing the deep mystery of the male-female relationship, doing so in a way that honors the complex nature of masculinity and femininity. They then also go simple by sharing a "doable" plan for moving husband-wife communication from good to great (another catchy and encouraging phrase).
"Love Talk" offers many deep/simple tools such as the Love Talk Inidicator, the Secret to Emotional Connection, and a short course on Communication 101. Two companion his and her workbooks provide exercises and self-test to help couples apply the content and concepts contained in "Love Talk."
Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."
College student.......2005-07-01
I got this book because it was required for a class taught by Les & Leslie Parrott at Seattle Pacific University. The class and book are awesome! I'm not married, but I still learned a lot of practical tips for communicating with my future wife (hopefully) and even my friends and family!
They truly taught me a lot about the importance of communication & understanding each other...then you'll reach Love Talk!

Be victorious in your daily walk........2007-05-20
This book is a must if you want to walk with Christ on a daily basis and be what He intends for us to be. It's encouraging, insightful, and easy to understand. In our busy world, we need to unclutter our minds and focus on Him, that is what true success is all about and to be a light where Christ has placed us. I highly recommend this book, it will guide you on the right path.
From A Pastor's Heart!.......2007-03-21
I was humbled and uplighted by this book. For years Chuck has been a favorite of mine. His candor and preciseness are the qualities that draw me to his writes. As a young pastor I look to him for pastoral advice and I find them in his writings.
This volume is primarily about eight disciplines that must be at the center of everyone's life, esp. if you are a pastor, leading God's people. I especially like his chapter on Surrender. Thank you, Chuck.
So you want to be like Christ?.......2006-07-16
An excellent study guide book on the essentials of Christianity required to live a Christ-like life.
Outstanding Eye-Reopening Book.......2006-06-12
I think this is the first book I have ever read from Brother Swindoll. I just finished it reading a few minutes ago and I have come to the conclusion that this is a book that should be part of every Christian's personal library. Though he mentions "Eight Essentials To Get You There" (there meaning to be like Christ), I think of these essentials as selective ones and not as exhaustive. He is a great writer and this book flows easily from topic to topic. It covers these essentials in a brilliant, straight-forward manner that will make the reader examine his/her own life in contrast with that of Christ.
The only thought I disagree with in this book is found on page 63 where Brother Swindoll states the following: "I do not believe that people today receive audible instructions from God, receiving them directly from somewhere within their spirits. Our only reliable source of communication from God is the sixty-six books of the Bible." If this is so, and if I am understanding correctly what Brother Swindoll is stating, then there are three problems with this assumption or belief; 1) If the Bible is the only reliable source of communication from God to His people, then why did God Himself "gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,"? 2) If the Bible is the only reliable source of communication from God, what would happen when God sends an angel with a message for a particular person as He sent an angel to Cornelius? 3) If the Bible is the only reliable source of communication from God, are we not putting God in a box by refusing to accept that He can choose to speak audibly to whosoever He desires at the time and place of His choosing? By accepting the belief that God cannot audibly speak to His people, are we not stripping Him of His sovereignty? I hope this is not the case. Other than my disagreement mentioned above, I feel this is a great book for helping us to want to be like Christ.
one of the best.......2006-03-27
This is surely one of Swindoll's finest, there seems to be a humbleness and passion in these pages that carries these special thoughts along. Eight disciplines are developed in a devotional style, wrapped around a core development of discipline and intimacy with God. I'm not quite through the first reading yet, and I'm already sure that I'll need at least two more times through, probably slower each time, before I can expect to see real application. I'm being challenged deeply, by a pastor who really cares about Christlikeness, in his own life and mine.

Shakespeares' best romantic comedy.......2007-05-24
This is a pastoral romantic comedy that is set in the Middle Ages. The story is about four different sets of lovers who each represent the different faces of love. The characters are wonderfully portrayed. The setting is bucolic, and it is just so much fun. And, of course, the language is exquisite.
All the world is a romantic comedy........2006-08-21
I recently re-read AS YOU LIKE IT prior to attending The Colorado Shakespeare Festival's performance of this play under the summer stars here in Boulder. Shakespeare (1552-1616) produced this romantic comedy in 1599 and published it in the First Folio in 1623.
Summarizing the play is rather challenging. It basically tells the story of Duke Frederick, who has banished his brother, Duke Senior, into the Forest of Arden, thereby usurping the kingdom. In his exile, Duke Senior has found a humble life of merriment with his court. Following a wrestling match, Duke Frederick also banishes Orlando (son of the late Sir Roland de Boys) and Rosalind (daughter of Duke Senior) into the forest. At the match, the two have fallen into love at first sight. Out of friendhip, Duke Frederick's only child, Celia, and the court jester, Touchstone, follow Rosalind (now disguised as a boy, "Ganymede") into the forest. Soon, Orlando, Rosalind, Celia, and Touchstone are all welcomed into the merry life of banished Duke Senior. Orlando, however, is lovesick for Rosalind, and Rosalind (still disguised as a boy) decides to cure Orlando of his lovesickness. While counseling him in the ways of true love, Rosalind (disguised as Ganymede) finds herself falling deeper in love with Orlando. Meanwhile, Celia has fallen in love with Orlando's brother, Oliver. The two decide to get married the next day. Even witty Touchstone has fallen in love with a dull-witted goatherd girl, Audrey. In the final scene, and after many hilarious mixups, all romantic entanglements are resolved by marriage; and after a sudden religious conversion, Duke Frederick returns the throne to his brother--thereby righting all wrongs and uniting all couples by love and happiness.

All The World's A Stage.......2005-08-28
As You Like It is one of Shakespeare's most beloved pastoral comedies. Banishment, disguises and love are the elements with which Shakespeare weaves his tale of several pairs of lovers who ultimately wind up marrying in the forest of Arden.
The melancholy Jaques delivers one of Shakespeare's most familiar speeches regarding the seven ages of man. If you haven't read or seen a performance of As You Like It I highly recommend this paperback edition.
The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare's works are a great value and fit in your pocket.
