Customer Reviews:
Good, but huge.......2000-03-15
This work's primary selling point is that it's very complete. And its biggest drawback is that . . . it's very complete. There's more material in this volume than you can ever put to use. You come away from a straight read feeling overwhelmed, and you come away from a skimming or a search by subject feeling like you missed something. Still, if you're looking for specific material on something relating to King Arthur, this is probably your best bet. If you're looking to be entertained by the Arthurian story, buy yourself a copy of The Once And Future King.
Basic to all serious study on the topic.......1999-10-19
If you are serious about studying the Arthurian legends, you need this book. If you have no other reference work, this should be the one on your shelf. Lacy & Co. deserve heaps of praise on their heads for this volume! It covers aspects of the legends themselves in differing countries and in different eras. It covers art work. It covers music. It covers particular characters. It covers theories relating to the backgrounds to the legends, both historical and folklorical. The entries are readable, clear, and give lots of information so that you can follow up on any given topic. I cannot praise this book enough! Every library should have a copy (including many personal libraries...).
A must have for any collection........1996-05-16
This is the new, updated edition of The New Arthurian Encyclopedia published in hardcover in 1991. As with the older version, it provides more than 500 new entries that cannot be found in the 1986 Arthurian Encyclopedia. The update also contains a 40-page section compiling the various addendums that have appeared in The Arthurian Yearbook since 1991. It is disappointing to note, however, that these new items were not incorporated into the main work.
Arranged alphabetically, the Encyclopedia remains the most invaluable reference resource for the Arthurian Legend. Each entry is written and signed by a scholar of Arthurian studies, and is followed, where necessary, by a short bibliography. The index is much easier to use than the one in the original volume. A must have for any collection.

Book Description
This work is the first complete English translation of the Latin Etymologies of Isidore, bishop of Seville (c. 560–636). Isidore compiled the work between c. 615 and the early 630s and it takes the form of an encyclopedia, arranged by subject-matter. It contains much lore of the late classical world beginning with the Seven Liberal Arts, including Rhetoric, and touches on hundreds of topics ranging from the names of God, the terminology of the Law, the technologies of fabrics, ships and agriculture to the names of cities and rivers, the theatrical arts, and cooking utensils. Isidore provides etymologies for most of the terms he explains, finding in the causes of words the underlying key to their meaning. This book offers a highly readable translation of the twenty books of the Etymologies, one of the most widely known texts for a thousand years from Isidore’s time.

Book Description
Over a decade in the making, Medieval Folklore is your A-to-Z guide to the mundane and supernatural lore of the Middle Ages. Definitive and lively articles focus on the great myths and legends of the age-daily and nightly customs and activities; religious beliefs of pagan, Christian, Muslim, and Jew; key works of oral and written literature; traditional music and art; holidays and feasts; food and drink; and plants and animals, both real and fantastic. Especially remarkable are the surveys of the major medieval traditions, included among them Arab-Islamic (Ulrich Marzolph), Baltic (Thomas A. DuBois), English (John McNamara and Carl Lindahl), Finno-Ugric (Thomas A. DuBois), French (Francesca Canade Sautman), Hispanic (Samuel G. Armistead), Hungarian (Eva Pocs), Irish (Joseph Falaky Nagy), Italian (Giuseppe C. Di Scipio), Jewish (Eli Yassif), Scandinavian (Stephen A. Mitchell), Scottish (John McNamara), Slavic (Eve Levin), and Welsh (Elissa R. Henken and Brynley F. Roberts). For anyone who has ever wanted a path through the tangle of Arthurian legends, or the real lowdown on St. Patrick, or the last word on wolf lore--this is the place.

Handy Medieval Reference.......2004-10-27
This is a great reference book for anyone interested in folklore and/or medieval social history. It includes biographical sketches, famous literary figures, regional traditions, holidays, and much more. This compendium covers an impressive range, while remaining manageable - the full index and copious "See also:" cross-references are commendable. It's a pleasure to thumb through and provides a solid introduction to topics as diverse as "Robin Hood", "Samhain", "memento mori" and "skis and skiing".

Fantastic.......2007-03-06
I bought this for my Dad. He loves it and feels like he is becoming well read because of the synopsis of all the classics. He even forced me to read several to insure him they followed the real books. They did. Great gift idea.
Great book!.......2005-06-20
Just Perfect
Unfortunately, we purchased ours at Restoration Hardware and paid more :(
Lots of fun info about fascinating people, events, things, without the filler that bores you.
Cannot wait for future volumes.
Best Bathroom Reading.......2003-11-23
This is a terrific book! I received it as a gift and want to give it as one. It contains many short essays on various topics, biographies, classic book synopsis, quotes, business advice, health information, anecdotes, self-help information, vocabulary building, grammar rules and on and on. A mini library in one book. Great to keep in the bathroom for your reading pleasure. It won't disappoint. You'll keep enjoying it for a long time.

Excellent Reference for Students.......2001-06-13
I used Chaucer A to Z in both my senior year of high school and my freshman year of college where I talked a professor into letting me into his upper-level English course on Chaucer. I found the book to be a tremendous help in understanding what was going on in Chaucer's early works, like the Book of the Duchess, as well as giving me a greater understanding of each of the Canterbury Tales. Since none of the classes covered ALL of the Canterbury Tales, I was able to use Ms. Rossignol's summaries to find out what I was missing in the tales we didn't read. The information about Chaucer's life was also very helpful. All in all, this is a first rate book, the most comprehensive guide to Chaucer I have seen.
Precious on english history........2000-05-12
After reading it, I think that It is really a good book that can be bring intoschools to teach the students the proceesing of the English literature.Though, it still has some problems on reading books for the old words, its value can not be quoted.

Book Description
Dante's World, Work, and Influence
The Dante Encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference work that presents a systematic introduction to Dante's life and works and the cultural context in which his moral and intellectual imagination took shape. It is the only such work currently available in the English language.
The first major source of its kind in the English language.
Until now, much Dante scholarship has been scattered in various sources and not available in English. This book brings together all the most recent theories about Dante and his works and summarizes them in clear and vivid prose for readers who seek basic but detailed information on all major aspects of Dante scholarship.
Includes entries on all the major characters in, and aspects of, the
Divine Comedy.
The entry on the Divine Comedy covers far more than the surface details of this masterpiece. In-depth discussions treat its title and form, its moral structure, andits allegory and realism. Additional entries offer comprehensive discussions of the Divine Comedy manuscript tradition; of the various editions of the work over the centuries; and of the early and Renaissance commentaries on the work.
Includes numerous entries on Dante's other works.
The encyclopedia contains numerous entries on Dante's other important writings and on the major subjects covered within these works. Topical essays correlate the intellectual foundations of Dante's thought and works with the heritage of the Middle Ages and its various related disciplines.
Cross disciplinary in its approach.
The encyclopedia addresses connections between Dante and philosophy, theology, poetics, art, psychology, science, and music as well as critical perspective across the ages, from Dante's first critics (Boccaccio and Dante's son Pietro) to the present.
Reflects the present state of scholarship.
Where disagreement exists among scholars, the major points of contention are summarized and the underlying critical disagreements are presented in a clear style and neutral tone.
Abundantly illustrated.
More than 200 illustrations show the reader historic renderings of Dante's otherworld moral structure, the medieval world view of the globe, and representations of Dante's otherworld by various artists through the ages. The book also includes contemporary photographs of specific locations significant in Dante's history.
Customer Reviews:
The New Dante Reference of Choice.......2000-07-17
Prof. Richard Lansing's Dante Encyclopedia is a reference work of deep interest, wide scope, and unimpeachable authority. General readers, students, and scholars--especially those who are English-based--are bound to make this volume their Dante reference of choice. Hundreds of clear, intelligent, and up-to-date entries from today's best-respected Dante scholars discuss every person and place mentioned in Dante's works as well as a vast number of biographical, historical, and cultural topics. The encyclopedia will appeal to anyone who is looking for a better appreciation of the poet's background, achievement, and critical legacy.
The maps and schematic drawings at the beginning of the encyclopedia are the best of their kind. The text is interspersed with an abundance of fine photographs and illustrations. Appended to the work are a detailed and reliable chronology of the poet's life, useful lists of the popes and emperors, a chronology of musical settings of Dante's Comedy, a list of available recordings of these settings, a list of reference works (including electronic resources), a complete pronouncing index, with textual citations, of the Italian and Latin proper names used by Dante, and an exhaustive index of subjects and illustrations.
So big, so accurate and comprehensive, the Dante Encyclopedia completely supersedes its predecessors and promises to remain authoritative for many years. No college or university, no lover of poetry and world literature will want to be without it.
At last a reasonable encyclopedia in English!.......2000-05-01
A fantastic accomplishment! As a longtime Dante enthusiast, I have been waiting for something in English (my Italian not being up to snuff yet) that combines breadth with depth.
As my own metric, I like to pick a topic that is not altogether esoteric and that is the subject of at least several competing theories. In studying Dante, that topic for me is numerology. I was especially pleased to read the article on numerology because the Dante Encyclopedia fairly explained the competing theories on the use of numerology by Dante. Never have I seen one source that provides the in-depth overview that this book does. For the serious student of the classics, this is a must-have! Gracie! And bravo!
