5 out of 5 stars Excellent - far exceeds expectations.......2006-07-05

We received this book as a gift and it really makes the A+ grade. My ds 8 and dd 9 love it - and with the additional information it provides (e.g. state rock, state animal, prominent landmarks)it could be used at much older ages. With attractive pictures and interesting text, this is a enjoyable supplement for homeschoolers - a way to make Geography lessons fun. This is a book to read and reread. We do hope to acquire more of this series!

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Tennnesseeans.......2001-06-14

This book will be valuable for anyone interested in learning more about the state of Tennessee. Mr. Shoulders takes the reader from Beale Street to the Trail of Tears. The neat thing is that the rhyming verse will be enjoyed by toddlers, but people of all ages will appreciate the information in the sidebars. The illustrations are very good, especailly those dealing with nature. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Tennesseeans.......2001-06-12

This book can be enjoyed by anyone who wants to learn more about the state of Tennessee. The neat thing about it is that the rhyming text will delight toddlers, but the information in the sidebars can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Mr. Shoulders takes us from Beale Street to the Trail of Tears. It's an informative journey enhanced by Langton's illustrations. Especially pleasing are those that deal with nature. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars G is for Great Book!.......2001-05-10

"V is for Volunteer" is a wonderful new addition to the selection of books about Tennessee. As a teacher and librarian, I can see many uses for this book. As a Tennesseean, Michael Shoulders has done an excellent job of finding interesting Tennessee people, places, and items for each letter of the alphabet. Even young children will recognize people they know of, such as Elvis, or places they have visited such as Nashville. The text provides an excellent read-aloud for any grade level, but the information on the end pages provides extra information that would be valueable for reports for upper grades. Adults and children alike will love this book!

Book Description

Prepositions: The Collected Critical Essays, published first in 1967 and then in an expanded edition in 1981, was a definitive set of critical statements by Louis Zukofsky, one of the most important poets of the 20th century. These central expositions of Zukofsky's own poetics, and enduring examinations of the art of poetry, range over the entire length of Zukofsky's career and include sensitive and prescient readings of Henry Adams, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Ezra Pound, E. E. Cummings, and others.

Prepositions + brings this essential collection back into print, and adds generous selections of Zukofsky's uncollected prose, most notably the crucial 5 Statements for Poetry. Published in a small edition in 1958 and out of print ever since, 5 Statements gathers the essays that Zukofsky felt best presented his own poetics. Among them are the three essays, in their original and expansive forms, that crystallized the "Objectivist" movement of the early 1930s. Prepositions + also includes an extended in-depth interview in which Zukofsky discusses his poetry and poetics.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clarity, Economy, Beauty.......2001-07-06

Louis Zukofsky imbued criticism with the grace of his poetry. He believed that poetry was not a gesture to be revered, but a crystalization of experience, individual and general. Thus his criticism of poetry judges it against vital standards, with reference to philosophy and history, but without reference to critical fashion. The academic formulae which remove poetry from experience to convention are absent from this book: a great writer who takes pains to be an acute reader tells us what sustains him, and can sustain us.

The language of invention, of discovery must always seem strange at first, but time has brought us closer to these original explorations of sincerity in poetry. Zukofsky wrote about his contemporaries as they appeared, and helped many of them to appear. He was there. If you want to know what poetry can do, unfettered by prejudice, you can find it here. I urge you to. Prepositions, in conjuction with his poetry, can change and illuminate how you see, feel, hear, think.

5 out of 5 stars The Singer story .......2005-09-23

What makes the Singer story so remarkable?
First of all, the Singer story is always a story. A beginning, a middle an end, and things which happen. Secondly, its language is lively and humorous, rich in Yiddish idiom, colorful alive. Thirdly, the Singer story has remarkable, memorable characters .
Fourthly the Singer story creates a whole world usually a Jewish world usually a world resembling some past Jewish historical world. Fifthly, the Singer story gives insight, wisdom into life. Sixthly, the Singer story is alive, word by word, line by line, scene by scene.
It lives and makes us want to live more.

5 out of 5 stars Singer is in the highest rank of short story authors.......2005-02-12

I had read the collected stories of Singer many years ago and many of the images remained embedded in my mind and it was with great joy that I am able to relive them. Even though he wrote novels, I do not believe that Singer would have won the Nobel Prize without his short story output.
It is interesting to witness the growth of Singer as a human and an artist. This middle volume of the LOA series contains stories written after he moved to the US. It is hard to believe that these stories are translated from Yiddish because they read as if they were written in English.
If you can afford all three volumes buy them. The collected stories are still available but Singer's stories are consistenly wonderful. Very view of these stories are not among the very best stories in world literature. Bravo to the Libray of America for reintroducng the reading public to these gems.

        Book Description

After a career working and living with American Indians and studying their traditions, Barre Toelken has written this sweeping study of Native American folklore in the West. Within a framework of performance theory, cultural worldview, and collaborative research, he examines Native American visual arts, dance, oral tradition (story and song), humor, and patterns of thinking and discovery to demonstrate what can be gleaned from Indian traditions by Natives and non-Natives alike. In the process he considers popular distortions of Indian beliefs, demystifies many traditions by showing how they can be comprehended within their cultural contexts, considers why some aspects of Native American life are not meant to be understood by or shared with outsiders, and emphasizes how much can be learned through sensitivity to and awareness of cultural values.

Winner of the 2004 Chicago Folklore Prize, The Anguish of Snails is an essential work for the collection of any serious reader in folklore or Native American studies.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written Inquiry into American Indian Culture.......2004-01-02

Toelken's book is an excellent study of the culture of America's first peoples. It is an eloquent discussion of how to learn about American Indian history and culture by looking at the everyday activities, traditional arts, folklife, and rituals that are shared with the public. Toelken's work challenges stereotypical and inaccurrate perceptions about Indians; more importantly, he shows ways to understand what other people have to offer when they perform their cultural traditions. It is also beautifully illustrated with gorgeous photographs, many of them in color. The book is written for both academic and non-academic audiences as an introduction into contemporary American Indian culture. I highly recommend this fine book written by an excellent folklorist.

5 out of 5 stars Great summer fun.......2005-05-31

I am a elementary school librarian, and I just finished this book. It is perfect summer reading for ages 5th through 8th and above. It has all the elements kids are looking for in a book starting with humor. The main character, Justin, has just the right voice to carry the book off as he takes a job as a nanny but being a guy he is a "manny." Romance that isn't cheeseball, dialogue that is realistic, situations that seem all too real and an ending that works just as it should. A winner all the way around.
