Book Description
“Politics is stuck,” writes Bill Bradley, in this insightful, informative, and provocative book about America at a crossroads, but “idealism isn’t dead. It can be reawakened.”
What will it take to make America a better, stronger, truer country? asks the bestselling author, former Knicks star, and onetime presidential candidate. Bill Bradley believes that America is at a teachable moment when we are compelled to reevaluate our political system, our leadership, our agenda as a nation, and ourselves as citizens. With clarity and urgency, Bradley shows why the story we are being told now about who we are as a people is not true. He then offers a new story about our nation, based on America’s rich heritage and his belief in the character of the American people. Bradley explores what changes need to be made in our parties, in our politics, and in citizen activism to ensure America’s future. He asserts that the American people are ready for the truth and suggests that the party that chooses to embrace this new story will be in power for a generation.
Writing from his own experience in politics and drawing on his knowledge of history, Bradley shows how the Republican Party has built a solid pyramid structure since the 1970s, at the base of which are money, ideas, and media, whereas the Democratic Party’s structure is an inverted pyramid, with too much emphasis put on the need for a charismatic leader to hold the pyramid up. Each party, for different reasons, fails to deal with the real issues that now confront America.
This informed and inspiring call to action is addressed not only to the parties and elected leaders, but to citizens as well. Bradley proposes things every American can do to shape our nation’s future. He points out that if eighty percent of the electorate voted, instead of fifty percent, it would be the most important change in American politics since women got the vote. Now more than ever, he says, we need to embrace an “ethic of connectedness,” a combination of
collective action and individual responsibility, to solve our nation’s most pressing
problems, and he argues that the fate of all countries is bound together as never before. Writing today with the freedom of a private citizen, Bradley provides this transformative and eye-opening book about the danger and the promise of America’s choice at this crucial moment in the nation’s history.

A Great American Story.......2007-06-27
The book made me wish Bill Bradley was a candidate for the Presidency. It lays out in straight forward, concise, complete and inspiring language a master plan for what our country needs to do now for its salvation.
The book might well be used as a text in university level political science courses. It provides the road map we're looking for. It's a "must read" for all Amercians who care about their country!
Politics Can Be Fascinating.......2007-06-09
Excellent VERY TIMELY blueprint for what the presidential candidates should be talking about. It's also a very thoughtful condemnation of the Bush regime. Hopefully, the next president will ask Bill Bradley to join his/her administration in a significant cabinet position or other role.
Bill Bradley (D) for President and Bloomberg (I) for VP?.......2007-05-29
Edited 25 Jun 07 to focus on possibility of Bradley-Bloomberg and comment.
This is a very solid, well-written and well-documented, and with great insights that I am all too happy to absorb in my capacity as an estranged moderate Republican. On balance I find Bill Bradley to be smarter, more nuanced, more deliberate, and not so trivially, taller and fitter than Al Gore. I am so impressed by the possibilities that I am immediately going back to my existing copy of Price of Loyalty, the story of how Dick Cheney betrayed Paul O'Neill and all the rest of us moderate Republicans, to see if there is a cross-walk that can be done. If these two worthies will agree to electoral reform and a transpartisan Cabinet, we can save the Republic in 2008.
The book begins with a marvelous review of the many false stories the extremist Republicans and their White House neo-cons have been telling about everything from tax cuts and the deficit and Medicare to Iraq, terrorism, and so on He has mastered the story-telling dynamic so recommended by Stephen Denning, the World Bank's Chief Knowledge Officer until his retirement.
In Part II of the book the author explores the break-downs in global cooperation and global responsibility, and specifically points to the growth of religion as a force we cannot ignore. See Left Hand of God. He addresses the big picture issues including the concentration of wealth and the drop in savings, increase in inequality, and failure to invest in the future (education, infrastructure).
His review names three systems--economic, social, and national defense--where we are being pushed to the breaking point. In a somewhat scattered fashion, he moves across education, the deficit, tax reform, geopolitical instability, oil, water, pensions, stock market, and health care (specifically praising Paul O'Neil and holistic reform.
In part III he identifies voter turn-out and electoral reform as the two keys to victory over money and conglomerate media spin. The book then ends with what for me was complexly new and useful insight on why the Republicans cannot fix nor manage America, and why the Democrats continue to flounder.
His eight "curses" of the Democratic Party:
1) Fear of thinking big
2) Capitulation on defense (hard vs soft power)
3) Inability to counter accusations of being wasteful spendthrifts
4) Close-minded devotion to the secular
5) Wealth-bashing
6) Special Friends in teachers, trial lawyers, and auto workers
7) Ceased to stand on principle
8) Hypnotized by charisma
There is no one now running that I consider worthy of being the first transpartisan president. Bradley, if he adopted the three standards: electoral reform as the only truly urgent issue; transpartisanship and a transpartisan cabinet announced in advance; and a commitment to show a balanced budget addressing all ten threats with all ten policies by November 2008, I'd want to be part of that restoration of the Republic.

Pollyanna meets Karl Marx.......2007-05-14
When I saw Bradley interviewed by Charlie Rose, I thought he had some good ideas --- then I read the book. I have now subtitled it "Pollyanna Meets Karl Marx". Bradley is a big government guy who thinks that if someone just explains to the American people what is required of them tax-wise that we can solve all our problems --- from the environment to education to pensions to healthcare. This is not to say that he does not have good thoughts on both education and breaking away from oil dependence.
If he left his strong political bias out and just talked about ideas, he might have been more effective, but he chose to take the path of bashing Bush and Republicans in general for every problem the country faces. His two chapters on "Why the Republicans Can't" and "Why the Democrats Don't" are particularly telling. He basically says Republican obligations to special interests prohibit them from telling the truth or doing the right thing. In a left-handed sort of way, he seems to even blame them for "why the Democrats don't. Democrats supposedly know what is right, but are afraid to say it or act on it because they won't get elected. (Kind of blows his whole theory on telling people what is needed and expecting them to do the "right" thing, doesn't it?) He really would have us believe that the Democrats have no debt to special interests, such as the unions (including the NEA)and litigation lawyers. This last one is especially hard to swallow when one of their leading candidates for President made his fortune as an ambulance chaser.
His thoughts on reducing oil dependence are generally good, but it is interesting that Bush proposed new fuel standards in January, but the Democrat controlled Congress refuses to even address the issue because they don't want to give the Republicans a "win" before 2008.
Another good section is the one on education, but here, again, he misses the significant factor in one of the key points he makes --- namely the untapped resource of black and Latino children. Democrats love these two groups because they vote correctly, but over the years they have really been more about providing welfare payments and allowing floods of illegal and often illiterate people to enter our system than educating them. They system "rewards" people who should not be parents for having children while forcing many people who want and can afford children to go overseas for adoptions.
Bottom line: Bradley believes people will always do the right thing if asked and for those big holes where they don't or can't, government can step in and fix everything.
View from a country divided.......2007-05-13
Bradey offers not only a review of where the neo-cons and selfish corporations have failed our country but offers a view of how it will take every American working together to regain our great empire. I hope he is correct and that all Americans are up to the challenges - I hope I am.

Book Description
The Definitive Book on Photography Today; Featuring 121 Artists from Over 30 Countries
The life of an artistic medium lies in the capricious nature of the contemporary art market. Even the heavy-hitters - painting, sculpture and drawing - have fallen victim to this ebb and flow; declared dead one moment, only to be resurrected the next. Now it is photography's turn to contemplate its fate atop this precarious fence. Does it fall backward and play into the taunts that call photography an "obsolete" medium, so stretched and manipulated by its collaborations with other practices that it is rendered indefinable? Or, inspired by globalization, does it jump forward into distinction, with practitioners resuscitating the traditional form of the documentary image?
VITAMIN Ph: NEW PERSPECTIVES IN PHOTOGRAPHY, with an introduction by TJ Demos, is the definitive book on photography in the contemporary art world today. VITAMIN Ph is a global survey of new developments in the medium of photography, featuring 121 living artists who have made a contribution to the international art photography scene in the last five years.
VITAMIN Ph presents a stunning collection of 500 images, the magnitude and diversity of which illustrates the integral developments in photography - the dispersal of the medium on the one hand and the reinvention of documentary representation on the other - that have recalibrated the medium in the age of globalization. The artists were nominated by 78 of the world's top critics, curators and fellow artists such as: Vince Aletti, Christine Macel, Martin Parr, Sandra Philips, Mark Godfrey, Tod Papageorge, Tim Griffin, Jack Persekian, Richard Flood, Donna De Salvo, Katy Seigel, Richard Prince and Sarah Lewis.
VITAMIN Ph features an introduction by TJ Demos, Lecturer in Art History at University College London, member of Art Journal's editorial board and contributor to ArtForum. Demos offers a critical account of photography as a medium driven by two things - the reinvention of documentary practice and photography's fragmentation as a medium - and inspired by the historical circumstances of our current era. He explores the impact of technological advances, geographic mobility, and the decline in national sovereignty on photography today. Demos theorizes that photography, through its growing diversity, illustrates the many ways that we are different, helps us to understand those differences, and connects us to a global world.
The 121 artists selected represent over 30 countries including, Morocco, Russia, South Africa, Israel, South Korea, Greece, Mexico, Palestine, and the United States. There is an ocean of talent: established artists, recent crossovers to the medium, and artists who are just making their mark on the art scene.
Some highlights from the book include:
* The work of established artists Tacita Dean and Anri Sala and the more emerging, Miriam Bäckström and Markus Schinwald, display the influence of a trained camera-eye. These artists have made a foray into photography that is built upon the elements of video: storytelling, framing, and the importance of place and time. Schinwald, who's artistic studies began in fashion design, explores strategies of theatrical gesture with a polished cinematic style
* The performance artist, Tim Lee, uses the medium to stage complex relationships between iconic artworks, canonical moments of popular culture and issues of racial identity. His image, The Jerk, Carl Reiner, 1979 (2004), illustrates a duality in meaning, one with complex cultural undertones as well as full frontal absurdity.
* The Russian collaborate AES+F, the Israeli artist Emily Jacir and the emerging artists Ahlam Shibli and An-My Lê create works inspired by the politics of their respective cultures, as they exist in today's society. Le, a political refugee from Vietnam, became involved in a Vietnam War re-enactor group in South Carolina in which she participated and took photographs of Vietnam battles restaged on her newly adopted American soil. Under the guise of photojournalism, Le documents the actors on their historical stage, achieving a look that is both rigorously aesthetic and conceptual, almost dream like.
* Inspired by a decade of belly dancing, Elinor Carucci photographs the lives of belly dancers taken in the years following Carucci's move from her hometown of Jerusalem to New York. Seen alongside images of Carucci herself, this series addresses the divisions between public and private selves, celebrating the moments of preparation and repose as much as those filled with glamour and noise.
* Drawing from his own experience as a drug addict Gareth McConnell's most recent series is filled with a palpable loneliness. In Night Flower #43, for example, the stark contrast of delicate pink petals that seem to fade into a dark void cause the viewer to rethink issues of time, permanence, abandon and hope.
In VITAMIN Ph, the featured artists are presented in A to Z order. For each artist, approximately five selections of work are reproduced alongside text by a critic who is a specialist on the artist's career. The surveys cover the artists' careers to date and explain the methods and subject matter featured in recent works.
Whether the style is documentary, deadpan, abstract, or portraiture; no matter that the artists are sculptors, video artists, painters, and photography has become a vital part of contemporary art. VITAMIN Ph is the only book of its kind to illustrate the up-to-the-minute complexity, variety and global spectrum of photography today.
The book follows the similar concept, scope and structure to Phaidon's successful volumes Vitamin P (2002), for painting, and Vitamin D (2005), for drawing.
Customer Reviews:
A great glimpse at contemporary photography.......2007-04-01
This book provides a short sample of each artists work along with an explanation about the artist or the works.
It is fantastic as a student tool to have such a range of works at your fingertips. It is also great for those just looking as the content is broad and dynamic.
I have yet to come across a book that has such a large number of contemporary photographers along with a range of their work (rather than a single iimage job).
New Zealand Artist.......2007-01-19
Having already purchased Vitamin D and Vitamin P I was expecting great things of Vitamin Ph. I was not disappointed. This book is beautifully presented. The Artists work chosen for this book are all of a high standard. Living in NZ you are a long way away from the International art scene. The only way to find out what is happening is from books such as this.

Book Description
Based on the NPR series of the same name, THIS I BELIEVE features 80 Americans-from the famous to the unknown-completing the thought that begins with the book's title. The pieces that make up the program compel listeners to re-think not only what and how they have arrived at their own personal beliefs, but also the extent to which they share them with others.Featuring a star-studded list of contributors that includes John McCain, Isabel Allende, and Colin Powell (as well as pieces from the original 1950's series including Helen Keller and Jackie Robinson), the collection also contains essays by a Brooklyn lawyer, a woman who sells yellow pages advertising in Fort Worth, TX and a man who serves on the state of Rhode Island's parole board. The result is a stirring, funny and always provocative trip inside the minds and hearts of a diverse group of Americans whose beliefs, and the incredibly varied ways in which they choose to express them, reveal the American spirit at its best.

Nuggets of Treasure.......2007-05-16
If you're looking for a book you can read in one sitting, this is not the one. "This I Believe - The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women" is a powerful collection of essays based on the National Public Radio series of the same name. The book is edited by Jay Allison, host and curator, and Dan Gediman, executive producer, of This I Believe. These editors are donating their proceeds to This I Believe, Inc. a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the mission of This I Believe.
Eighty essayists contributed to this book, each one penning concise expressions of their thought processes following the book's title. From the world-renowned Bill Gates, Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, Helen Keller, John McCain, and Carl Sandburg, to the hometown lawyer, professor, part-time clerk, and tone-deaf music lover, each one spoke of their deepest beliefs in life. From reflections on kindness, generosity, and compassion, to staunch convictions about democracy, freedom, and war, these essays touch chords every reader will hear in their hearts and minds.
Novelist Isabel Allende, niece of Chilean president Salvador Allende, writes, "Give, give, give--what is the point of having experience, knowledge, or talent if I don't give it away? Of having stories if I don't tell them to others? Of having wealth if I don't share it? I don't intend to be cremated with any of it! It is in giving that I connect with others, with the world, and with the divine."
Grammy award winner, singer-songwriter, and actor Loudon Wainwright III says, "I believe in the power of inspiration, in the mysterious gift of creation. Creation with a small "c," that is, creation as in one's work, hauling a day's catch. When I write a song, I'm happy for a few days and it's not just because I've been reassured that I still have a job, though that's certainly part of it. Mostly I'm happy, I think, because I've experienced a real mystery. I haven't the slightest idea how it happened or where or from whom or what it came. I'd prefer not to know. In fact, I'd prefer not to talk about it anymore. It might scare the fish away."

The best gift book you can give, this I believe.......2007-05-12
There is something for eveyone. In a world of mad rushing and limited time, this book provides the profound and provocative in quick small doses--simply perfect!
Unbelievably inspirational in an everyday kind of way.......2007-05-06
This is my new favorite book! What i love (and hate) about it is that it's really best to only read a few pages per day. It's so difficult not to just keep on reading one story after another, but then i don't get the full benefit of being able to soak in all the wisdom. And it's great for reading out loud to friends.
Each Unique, Each Profound...........2007-05-05
First of all, let me share with you, that I am a fan of public radio. I saw this book on NPR's website, and went straight away to the library to borrow it. I was so impressed with what I read, I eventually bought two copies through Amazon; one for myself and one as a gift for a dear friend. Each essay is personal, profound, and eloquently stated. I never had the sense that any essay was meant as a sermon or a chance to convert my thinking. Someone told me the audio book is even better; because most of the authors are reading their own piece and you can feel what they're saying and how deeply they have committed themselves to their philosophical point of view.
This I Believe.......2007-04-13
Truly inspiring and varied in perspective. Enjoyable regardless of religion or political view.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02
Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.
pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16
Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Most diners believe that their sublime sliver of seared foie gras, topped with an ethereal buckwheat blini and a drizzle of piquant huckleberry sauce, was created by a culinary artist of the highest order, a sensitive, highly refined executive chef. The truth is more brutal. More likely, writes Anthony Bourdain in Kitchen Confidential, that elegant three-star concoction is the collaborative effort of a team of "wacked-out moral degenerates, dope fiends, refugees, a thuggish assortment of drunks, sneak thieves, sluts, and psychopaths," in all likelihood pierced or tattooed and incapable of uttering a sentence without an expletive or a foreign phrase. Such is the muscular view of the culinary trenches from one who's been groveling in them, with obvious sadomasochistic pleasure, for more than 20 years. CIA-trained Bourdain, currently the executive chef of the celebrated Les Halles, wrote two culinary mysteries before his first (and infamous) New Yorker essay launched this frank confessional about the lusty and larcenous real lives of cooks and restaurateurs. He is obscenely eloquent, unapologetically opinionated, and a damn fine storyteller--a Jack Kerouac of the kitchen. Those without the stomach for this kind of joyride should note his opening caveat: "There will be horror stories. Heavy drinking, drugs, screwing in the dry-goods area, unappetizing industry-wide practices. Talking about why you probably shouldn't order fish on a Monday, why those who favor well-done get the scrapings from the bottom of the barrel, and why seafood frittata is not a wise brunch selection.... But I'm simply not going to deceive anybody about the life as I've seen it." --Sumi Hahn
Book Description
When Chef Anthony Bourdain wrote "Don't Eat Before You Read This" in The New Yorker, he spared no one's appetite, revealing what goes on behind the kitchen door. In Kitchen Confidential, he expanded that appetizer into a deliciously funny, delectable shocking banquet that lays out his 25 years of sex, drugs, and haute cuisine.
From his first oyster in the Gironde to the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center, from the restaurants of Tokyo to the drug dealers of the East Village, from the mobsters to the rats, Bourdain's brilliantly written, wild-but-true tales make the belly ache with laughter.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful read!.......2007-06-20
Bourdain's style and the entertainment value of each anecdote make this book a fun diversion and something of a learning experience.
Kitchen Confidential.......2007-06-12
EXCELLENT!! I already love Anthony from his No Reservations show on the Travel Channel, but this book just sealed the deal. It's funny, insightful and, and for a novice, puts a whole new spin on eating out!
A fun and entertaining read..........2007-06-11
You'll go from giggling to saying "Oh my god!" several times before you finish reading this book.
I've enjoyed Anthony Bourdain since I first saw him on the Travel Channel's "No Reservations". He is one of few celebrities I would actually like to hang out with. He is a charming man who is both worldly and wise from experience and honest by conviction. His descriptions of food are tempting and colorful. I've never even been slightly curious about what a fish head tastes like until I read about his meal at an out of the way kitchen during his visit to Japan.
I don't understand why this man works at one of the least thought about, most difficult, and most underpaid professions in this country unless it is truly his gift. Without his book, I would know nothing about what happens in that beehive called a restaurant kitchen.
The Real Deal.......2007-05-21
Tony Bourdain presents his life and an overview of the underbelly of the cooking world in this honest, hilarious and sometimes brutal account. Excellent information for anyone interested in cooking, and a great read with funny anecdotes for anyone who has ever eaten in a restaurant.
An intriguing look at another world.......2007-05-15
This book was recommended by several people I work with, as they knew I enjoy getting a glimpse of life, not otherwise known about. This book didn't disappoint. What a wild subculture exists, just beyond the wall from the general dining public! Even though this is one man's experience and perspective, and every kitchen may not be the way he describes, this voyeristic view into the world he has seen is captivating! If you are not easily offended by crude situations and language, this book should be on your stack to read. And potential readers should also know that this book is not so much about what the kitchen and wait staff do to the food as it is about the personal lifestyle and kitchen adventures of the people in the industry. Really a good book.

Book Description
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Laughing out loud while I'm riding the train.......2007-04-08
I'm about 2/3 of the way through this amazing book and have to let everyone know that you need to read this one. I have been reading it during my train commute, grinning from ear to ear, and cackling out loud every few minutes.
The book alternates between a hilarous telling of a lengthy hike along the Appalachian Trail by the author and his out-of-shape buddy Stephen, and a well-researched description of the AT's construction, history, & ecology. The stories of their hiking-gear research, the author's deathly fear of bears, and their run-ins with neurotic fellow hiker Mary Ellen had me in tears.
This book ties with "Catch 22" as the funniest I've ever read, just ahead of Palahniuk's "Lullaby".
great.......2007-03-20
I loved this book. An amature hikers guide to the woods lol. Love the anickdotes about various towns and the trails he goes on. Love the history.
It's not only funny, it's educational........2007-03-20
Bill Bryson has a great sense of humor and an excellent, precise way of expressing it. My husband had just had heart surgery when I started reading this book. I was concerned that my LOL while reading A Walk in the Woods might disturb him as I sat next to his hospital bed. However, on the other hand, I thought it might expedite the healing process. He told me later he heard me laughing and it made him feel better. So, there you go, Bill, your book is good for heart patients!!
Bill and buddy, Stephen Katz, the only person to take Bill up on the offer to join him as he hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1997?, began their odyssey on March 9 (this just happened to be the day I began reading the book...2007). The laughs came early and continued throughout, though parts of the book are more history and information than comedy. I took notes in these sections.
Both Bryson and Katz were out of shape when they hit the AT, but Bill noticed his body slimming and becoming more svelte right away (one thing I looked for, but never found, was word on how the adventure affected Katz's weight and figure. I would've been interested in knowing that). The men hiked the AT in two segments and, incidentally, did not hike the entire trail, which they decided was okay. I agree. At any rate, they hiked a few weeks in pre- and early spring and again in the heat of August. While they were off the trail, Bryson took day trips to walk parts of the AT between where he and Katz left off and the Hundred Mile Wilderness in Maine they planned to hike in August. This book not only tells the tale of two men attempting to walk the 2,200 miles of the AT, but is full of history lessons, geological and geographical information, stories of lost/doomed hikers, and social intercourse (i.e., the more than rude, self-centered, and boorish hikers the boys meet on their next to last day on the trail the first time).
This book is a good companion so read it slowly, digest it thoroughly, and you will enjoy it immensely.

Book Description
“People who love dogs often talk about a ‘lifetime’ dog. I’d heard the phrase a dozen times before I came to recognize its significance. Lifetime dogs are dogs we love in especially powerful, sometimes inexplicable ways.”–Jon Katz
In this gripping and deeply touching book, bestselling author Jon Katz tells the story of his lifetime dog, Orson: a beautiful border collie–intense, smart, crazy, and unforgettable.
From the moment Katz and Orson meet, when the dog springs from his traveling crate at Newark airport and panics the baggage claim area, their relationship is deep, stormy, and loving. At two years old, Katz’s new companion is a great herder of school buses, a scholar of refrigerators, but a dud at herding sheep. Everything Katz attempts– obedience training, herding instruction, a new name, acupuncture, herb and alternative therapies–helps a little but not enough, and not for long. “Like all border collies and many dogs,” Katz writes, “he needed work. I didn’t realize for some time I was the work Orson would find.”
While Katz is trying to help his dog, Orson is helping him, shepherding him toward a new life on a two-hundred-year-old hillside farm in upstate New York. There, aided by good neighbors and a tolerant wife, hip-deep in sheep, chickens, donkeys, and more dogs, the man and his canine companion explore meadows, woods, and even stars, wade through snow, bask by a roaring wood stove, and struggle to keep faith with each other. There, with deep love, each embraces his unfolding destiny.
A Good Dog is a book to savor. Just as Orson was the author’s lifetime dog, his story is a lifetime treasure–poignant, timeless, and powerful.
Customer Reviews:
Zero Stars, I feel betrayed!.......2007-06-27
As a companion to a border collie, one never owns a border collie, I am appalled and ashamed of this book. I feel as though I have been betrayed and side swiped by Mr Katz. I came here thinking to warn other readers and found that I ,myself, should have come here first. This book starts out with the usual Katz humor and ends in typical Katz fashion, with the murder of Orson. By none other than his "soulmate". Am I the only one who sees a pattern here? I will never read another Katz book again. I wanted to fling this book across the room when I was blindsided by this unexpected turn. When I got to the part, I thought, surely not, but I was wrong. It is a tragic story written by a man who did not try hard enough to fully understand his dog who, clearly, had special needs. Everyone who has a border collie knows that they all have special needs and care. I have worked through this even now and it is never ending and ever changing. This book is an example of what not to do and everything Mr. Katz has ever done is now in vain. He should take his labs and go home to surburbia. He is certainly not worthy of a border collies love. I am glad I am a fast reader and kept the receipt. It is going back to the store tomorrow. I cannot stand to be haunted by the soulful face of Orson on the cover.
The Story of Orson, Who was Murdered.......2007-06-12
This is the story of a man who killed his faithful companion because a few people didn't know how to behave around dogs. Mr. Katz should read the books written by Stanley Coren.
I will never read anything by Jon Katz again.......2007-06-10
Maybe Jon Katz and Michael Vick should get together.
If Katz must write about dogs he should write about Labradors .......2007-05-28
I nearly put this book down after reading blanket statements about Border Collies with which I disagreed. Then again I have often made blanket statements about Labradors the author would probably think untrue. If Mr. Katz is going to write about dogs he should write about Labradors. He clearly loves that breed. Just as clearly he does not relate to or understand Border Collies. It is disturbing that some people will form their view of BCs based upon his books. He had a wonderful dog in Rose which he seems completely detached from. I can only hope a BC lover will rescue her from him. While I do agree that dangerous dogs should be put to sleep, I am not convinced that Orson got the chance he deserved. Mr. Katz spent large sums of money and time on trainers, vets and animal communicators, but seems to have missed a basic component of a happy, well-adjusted Border Collie, exercise! At least it is not apparent from the text or photos that Orson ever received sufficient exercise. Maybe sufficient for a Lab, but not for a Border Collie. It is not surprising that the deterioration in Orson's behavior coincided with the arrival of the ATV and with the author's own deteriorating physical capabilities.
As for the book itself, I've never read something I felt so strongly was written primarily because the author needed money. It is filled with side stories and fluff that don't contribute to the story.
Orson - a very good dog.......2007-05-21
I laughed and sobbed when reading this book. Having had both good and troubled dogs, I found this a great read! Easy to recommend.

A Simple Unavoidable Secret.......2006-07-11
I can't count how many copies I've bought of this book because I keep giving it to people. Years ago, it got me to study my cat tracking a cockroach without letting the bug know he was watching. That started my process of becoming more carefully observant of everything around me. It isn't ESP. It is, simply, paying attention. Most importantly, it is love, respect, and appreciation for All Life. By the time you finish reading (no doubt still hungry for more), you'll have gotten the message and probably given it a try. If you're serious about it, you'll find your life changing little by little and you'll discover how you can improve your relationships with others - animals or people - or insects, plants, and the planet itself. Once I chose to be somewhat of a reclusive hermit, but I couldn't do it because I have literally millions of intimate friends. The evidence of long ago that there was harmony among all on earth is still present. In choosing to stand there, we can begin to resolve our differences. We can evolve as humans. We can put an end to war and pestilence unfailingly, "whenever the human does his required part." Written in 1954, Boone's message is more important for us now than ever.
Profound impact.......2006-04-23
I read this book back in the late 50's and still own my original copy. It had that much of an impact on me! I have always been an animal lover, esp. dogs, but this book taught me more respect for all living things. I was fascinated with Boone's experiences and remember way back then trying to control a fly in a similar way. (I don't remember if I were successful.)
Today you can find book after book after DVD about "_________Whisperers" (fill in the blank with a type of animal), many of which are not unique (Cesar Millan IS the REAL thing, however!), but this book was a foundation book for all the rest.
I highly recommend reading it and am delighted to see it's back in print. Now I don't have to loan it out with the fear I'll never be able to replace it--actually, I still won't loan it out. Friends, here it is; buy your own copy!
Simple and Juicy and Right to the Heart!.......2006-02-27
My life has been about animals for so long...I even run a pet-care business! When I was kid, I knew all this stuff. But then I "grew up" and somehow lost track of the wonder of 'being still' and 'knowing.' In this phase of my life I'm finally back on track -- due in large part to the amazing animal teachers in my life. (And some great insight by humans as well!) This book really hits the mark when it comes to understanding the bond among all living things. It's straightforward and thoughtful and full of love. Just like you want all your relationships to be! It's a must have for any animal lover's library.
Kinship With All Life.......2005-09-12
I have made a gift of this book to a number of friends and having ordered another totally enjoyed it all over again. Delightful and sensitive it is a must for all generations regardless of age.
Learning Empathy For All Life.......2005-04-12
Mentally connecting with animals and insects? Boone tells the true story of his quest to understand their world from a totally non-anthropocentric (human superiority) view point by becoming a willing student and admirer of dogs, bugs, etc., in hopes of learning about them.
His open, non-judgmental attitude while attempting mental contact opens up a whole new world of communication and friendship. He bungles along with trial and error, but he soon finds out that non-verbal language of thoughts and feelings is just about all that is necessary to commune with them and this, coupled with true admiration and love for what each critter is and does, gives them the safe comfort zone they need to feel appreciated and open with him.
Boone opens the story with an exceptionally well trained, smart and alert police dog from Germany named "Strongheart". The dog was brought to Hollywood to be groomed for films and he becomes a sensation in several films such as Jack London's "White Fang", et al. London, of course, is one America's most famous writers- especially known for another and even more popular dog story, "Call of the Wild"- both stories a must for all animal lovers. As a note of interest, Strongheart was the first dog to star in film and preceded the popular "Rin Tin Tin" series.
Larry Trimble, the man who trained Strongheart for the movies, had to take a break from Hollywood and go to New York for business, so he asked the screenwriter Boone to "dog watch" for him and here the fascinating tale of their meeting of the mind/spirit and friendship begins.
Boone goes on to tell of other critters he learned to commune with and finishes the book with a fly he befriends and calls "Freddie". I learned about Freddie from a reference in Joanne Elizabeth Lauck's book, "The Voice of the Infinite in the Small"- another beautiful treatment of finding empathy for life in all it's marvelous creations- especially bugs.
If I hadn't had many of the same incredible experience's with critters that Boone writes about, I could easily have dismissed this stuff as interesting, but hard to believe. My experiences did not come close to the intentional, driven need to know that Boone writes about and yet, I still have had some very consciousness awakening experiences of inter-critter, if you will, communication.
This book is a gem and a fast read- too fast, you will want more!

"Provence, again?" one may think, seeing Peter Mayle's latest effort. "Has the man nothing better to do than promote a region that's already overhyped and overpriced? Can't he turn his eye to a place that needs a touristic boost, like Bulgaria?"
However, there are reasons to plunge into the third Provençal book by Englishman Mayle, formerly a Madison Avenue copywriter whose bestselling A Year in Provence made the area a must-see for tourists and helped to quadruple real estate prices there. After four years in Long Island, Mayle has returned to France with continuing adoration.
Mayle discloses a world missed by tourists, be it the questions dry cleaners ask about wine stains or the mysterious murder of a small-town butcher given to making housewives happy with more than his displayed meat. He also incorporates guide-like tips--listing markets, cheese makers, and the essential how-tos of perfume sniffing and olive-oil tasting. What's more, this book gives a peek into the life of a bestselling writer. The role is not always an enviable one.
Mayle no longer fits into life in America--the vocabulary alone is enough to throw him off--yet in Provence, he is regarded as little more than a moneyed foreigner. Speared by the British press, he laments, "One of my crimes is to have encouraged people to visit the region ... far too many people ... and people of the wrong sort," an accusation that he denies.
And Mayle comes off as positively defensive in his attack of former New York Times food critic Ruth Reichl, who wrote that she was disappointed in the region. The title alone of chapter 3 hints at the sarcastic stabbings to follow: "New York Times Restaurant Critic Makes Astonishing Discovery: Provence Never Existed." Page after page, he roasts Reichl on the spit, creating a hissing Ruth Rotisserie that's most unbecoming from someone of his stature.
What most causes him to sputter is Reichl's admission that she "had been dreaming of a Provence that never existed."
"Where had I been living all these years?" writes the man who's helped to perpetrate the illusion of a land that is nothing but lavender fields, sunflowers swaying in the breeze, and fascinating characters every millimeter. "The Provence that Daudet, Giono, Ford Madox Ford, Lawrence Durrell and M.F.K. Fisher knew and wrote about--the Provence that I know--doesn't exist.... It's a sunny figment of our imagination, a romanticized fantasy."
Maybe. Having recently visited Provence, I agree with Reichl's critical assessment. Therein lies Mayle's ultimate charm. Crack open a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape, delve into Encore Provence, and voilà: it may be better than actually being there. --Melissa Rossi
Book Description
In his most delightful foray into the wonders of Provençal life, Peter Mayle returns to France and puts behind him cholesterol worries, shopping by phone, California wines, and other concerns that plagued him after too much time away.
In
Encore Provence, Mayle gives us a glimpse into the secrets of the truffle trade, a parfumerie lesson on the delicacies of scent, an exploration of the genetic effects of 2,000 years of foie gras, and a small-town murder mystery that reads like the best fiction. Here, too, are Mayle's latest tips on where to find the best honey, cheese, or chambre d'hìte the region has to offer. Lyric, insightful, sparkling with detail,
Encore Provence brings us a land where the smell of thyme in the fields or the glory of a leisurely lunch is no less than inspiring.

Life in the South of France.......2007-03-04
Food, the air, water, the land and the people in the South of France. The book beautifully took me thru life in this person move to this area.
PROVENCE, ONCE AGAIN.......2006-11-05
Peter Mayle effectivately takes us once again to beautiful Provence through his second book. His writing is witty yet very unassuming and laid back. He gives the reader vivid and often funny accounts of the land and its people. He has an uncanny ability to observe the smallest details in the Provencal locals that he meets and to express it in a very entertaining way through his books.
An Entertaining Book.......2006-06-25
"Encore Provence" is entertaining, but not quite as hilarious as "A Year in Provence".
fun, witty .......2006-02-04
As always, Mayle is terrible entertaining. His breezy style is fantastic. He has the ability to make his readers feel like you are sitting in a cafe with a glass of local wine, just listening to his endless line of colorful stories. At the last page of his books, I feel that I have finished my visit with him in Provence all too soon.

Customer Reviews:
Too much of America........2007-04-15
I picked up this book and "The Great LIFE Photographers" off the shelf of an art bookstore last night. Great books, a lot of emotion, great photography. Although, I wouldn't recommend buying these two books together. A lot of the photos are repeated, so one should be enough.
When I was going through this book, I was slightly annoyed by how "American" it is. I'm sure the Americans did a lot of great things. But about half a dozen of photos of baseball games/players?
Between those two books, I recommend "The Great LIFE Photographers" as it is smaller, more compact, and puts less emphasis on the US.
the image of a century.......2007-04-11
the life of each day all over the world.
The life of men and woman , in peace and at war.
To have, absolutely.
A reminder of how great the original Life Magazine was and what photojournalism should be.......2007-04-01
Before television - an era that well over half the population never experienced - there was Life Magazine, which brought the world into people's homes. The magazine's editors hired the world's best photographers who in turn became some of the world's greatest photojournalists. Life also never said no to great photography from any source. Life was, indeed, a window into life for many millions.
Alas, society moved on and rising costs and television ultimately killed off Life, Saturday Evening Post, Look and many other wonderful magazines.
This book is actually a little bit disappointing in that it is only 304 pages, 251 of them being given to pictures from Life Magazine. The book could have - and, in my opinion, should have - been two, three or even four times the size. Life Magazine represented the epitome of photojournalism for much of its history and I think people would pay handsomely to have the "complete" Life photo collection. Perhaps someday, like the New Yorker did with its cartoons and articles, all of Life's photos will be available for browsing on DVD.
In the meantime, for any student of popular culture, 20th Century History, photojournalism or photography, this book is essential. It does contain a wonderful treasure of Life photography, which in turn gives a mirror into the world as it was.
Perhaps the best part of the book are the tiny reproductions of every Life cover. These provide a true summary of the fleeting nature of fame (many Life cover subjects are entirely forgotten today), the restless world with its wars, famines and other upheavals - and reaffirmation that nothing ever changes.
For the money, this is a wonderful value - a great browsing and viewing experience.

If you want a coffeetable book that has decades of images which have enthralled all of us, this is the perfect choice. Also, photographers can learn what makes a compelling image.
Life: The Platinum Anniversary Collection: 70 Years of Extraordinary Photography.......2007-01-22
I ordered six copies of this book and gave 5 copies to my children for Christmas and one copy for my husband and myself. Everyone loved the books and it brought back many memories for all of us, no matter what age. My grandchildren have also enjoyed looking at the book and have found it very interesting. The book is educational and entertaining. I would recomend the book to others.
