Used for my college English II class, this text presents many literary ideas which could be useful for fully learning the many apsects of english.
There is an adjunct video course also usually taught in conjunction with this text, and its available for free on demand online at learner dot org.
I've kept this text for the many stories and usefull English info. Worth having.

Lip Smacking Good Literature Introductory Text.......2006-07-10
This is an outstanding survey of some of the best writers and best works written. The book's condensed background and critical literary text sections are vastly improved from the previous edition. The model readings and essays are outstanding and illustrative of exactly the kinds of writing approaches necessary to succeed in introductory and advanced collegiate literature study.
Most importantly, this book has great writing that will whet the appetites of serious scholars-in-training, as well as general readers who wish to fill in blanks in their reading backgrounds or explore familiar writers once again. The poetry sections are especially good, as well as the selection of classic and modern plays.
This is both an invaluable book for a literature professor and students, as well as a fun book that curious readers will enjoy exploring time and time again.
Enjoyable learning tool.......2005-12-01
I used this book in my class in college.
I throughly enjoyed the poems, stories etc. The writing information was clear and easily understood. I disagree with the reviewer blaming the book for the lower grade. I got an A.
a dense book.......2005-08-11
I had to write a review after seeing the only other review for this book. It sounded like some kid who had to take a class he didn't want to and blaimed the book for it. This is a great book. It's super dense, it contains a great deal of analysis of the various components of writing with illustrative examples (short stories) by a wide variety of contemporary and classic authors. This is a great anthology. It contains almost 1,500 pages and contains poetry, plays, and fiction. Also, it contains some biographical information and has a glossary of literary terms. A bargain for the price if you ask me.
gooses review.......2005-06-29
I had a class where I had to use this book and I only got a B in the class thanks to this book. This book should be strictly kept in libraries for its lack of educational value. On the bright side the best thing about this book has to be the cover. I didn't read the whole book but as far as I can tell it dosent have anything to do with the content inside the book.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good, just HUGE.......2006-09-08
There are some excellent selections from the poetry, short fiction, and drama genres in here. Oedipus Rex, Hamlet, Battle Royal, etc. You also have some dogs. Proof, the Red Wheelbarow (and other William Carlos Williams poems). Bottom line, whoever edited this anthology had no idea the amount of books a college student carries around and this one is very large. There's a lot of filler here, so suggestion to Bedford: take out some of the non-essentials to slim down this book. One semester doesn't cover 1,200 pages.
Great reference for the student!.......2000-06-11
This book was used in my Advanced Placement English course in high school, and was so thorough I had to buy a copy of my own to take with me to college! Contains a wealth of literature, from short stories and novel excerpts to poems and full-length works of drama. This guide also contains comprehensive literary criticism to compliment the pieces delivered, as well as a guide to writing and reading critically--a must for any college English student!

Before you purchase, make sure you get the right book. This is not for students, just for instructors (ISBN 0312403038).
An enthralling Anthology.......2000-03-29
This book is wonderful for developing ananlytical thought and critical literature development for both young men and women and older generations. This anthology contains: Poetry, Short Stories, and plays. The subjects range from the conflict between the interests of a parents and their child, growing up and discovering the world, and romance. This anthology contains such legendary works as: The Glass Menagerie, A Doll House, and eternal A Rose for Emily. Overall, I highly recommend this book as an edcational tool for an High School classes or as a nice collection of short works to read.

Book Description
Understanding Literature is an innovative anthology and technology package representing the next generation of literary pedagogy for introduction to literature and literature for composition courses. Built on a balanced foundation of canonical and nontraditional reading selections, this text includes discussions of the formal literary elementsand then goes a step further to integrate relevant and accessible coverage of contemporary criticism within each genre. This unique, integrated coverage of contemporary critical approaches (such as feminist theory, psychoanalytic theory, and postcolonial theory) offers students a richer, more engaging introduction to reading critically and writing about literature. Other anthologies offer minimal theoretical coverage in a separate chapter or appendix, typically sidestepping the larger issues the theories raise.
The integrated technology package, complete with CD-ROM and accompanying web site, takes advantage of multimedia resources to enhance the study of literature with visual aids, audio and video files, additional primary and secondary texts, and other materials that help place literature within the broader contexts of history and culture.
- Engaging, creative table of contents balances familiar authors and literary works with more adventurous and diverse selections, exposing students to a broad range of literature and providing instructors with great flexibility in designing their courses.
- Critical Perspectives offer concise, insightful discussions of how literary and cultural theories are used to explore meaning in literature. Throughout the anthology, casebooks, excerpts from classic and contemporary critical essays, and in-text discussions offer students accessible yet critical perspectives into how literary theory can facilitate a deeper understanding of literary texts. The fiction and drama sections feature brief in-text discussions and excerpts from literary critics. Critical Perspectives can also be used as a springboard for class discussion and writing.
- In-depth treatment of Featured Writers in each section allows more focused study of a single writer. This feature includes multiple reading selections showing the range of the writer's work, more extensive biographical information, and additional materials on the CD-ROM and web site. Writers highlighted include James Baldwin, Virginia Woolf, Salman Rushdie, John Keats, Gwendolyn Brooks, Anne Sexton, and William Shakespeare.
- Two unique interdisciplinary, multi-genre chapters ("The Beat Movement" and "Performative Poetics") focus on the spoken and performed aspects of literature. Coverage includes several works from key writers in both movements as well as discussions of how these movements use a mixture of medialanguage, film, jazz, photography, and artto showcase their work and provide social and political commentary.
- Unique poetry casebooks allow students to explore certain themes or topics in depth, such as "Poetry and Social Activism Between the Wars," "Poetry, Trauma, and Testimony: Holocaust Verses," "Postmodern Poetics," "Chicano/a Poetry," and "Native American Poetry."
- Emphasis on cultural perspectives reflects the increased desire to view the study of literature through the lens of culture. Reading selections, section introductions, questions for discussion, writing assignments, and other apparatus encourage students to view literature from different cultural perspectives.
- Thorough coverage of reading and writing about literature shows students how to read each genre and craft effective essays. Annotated student papers serve as models of good student writing, and a separate section teaches students how to conduct research and incorporate other sources into their writing.
- An abundance of visual art and illustrations help students place literary works in broader contexts.
