3 out of 5 stars Not a substitute, but has its uses.......2005-07-18

I certainly wouldn't suggest reading the Notes instead of reading what is arguably the greatest book(s)ever written. But the Notes do have their uses. I chose to use Tolkien's books as an example in my final project for a high school writing course. I had read the entire series twice, but that had been three years earlier. I found the Notes useful for jogging my memory on some of the scenes, and for picking out examples to use in my project. I would never recommend reading Notes instead of the actual book in ANY case - that is such a waste - but especially not for Tolkien. If you are reading Tolkien for a class, consider yourself lucky, and take the opportunity to read this amazing set of books in its entirety. Use the Notes just to jog your memory and better understand these classic books.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste of time.......2005-01-07

These oversimplified notes are truly abhorrent and inaccurate. Why not relax with a paperback edition of the true Lord of the Rings?

1 out of 5 stars The whole concept is disgusting!.......2003-11-20

The whole concept is disgusting! The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings are books meant to be read with love, joy and wonderment, NOT turned into texts to be read as exercises in drudgery and compulsion. It makes me furious that idiots and barbarians should so turn these books into texts and so kill children's love for them. It does not matter if they are accurate or not, they are WRONG!

1 out of 5 stars bleh!.......2003-03-07

Yuck yuck yuck! I only read the sample they have here but it's horrible! They have next to no detail, they even leave out characters, (any one remember Fatty Boldger?) it's wayyy to simplified.. and so on.. how someone could make a clifts notes of 4 books, (all of which are ~ 300 pages long) is not right in the head.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough detail, compared to the books........2002-10-14

"Cliffsnotes the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit" condensed the first book in the series tremendously! I am only rating the CliffsNotes for Book 1, as that is the only book I have read in the series. The notes are very general and skip over some events, so it's wise to read this after you have read "The Fellowship of The Ring." As always, read the CliffsNotes AFTER you have read "The Fellowship of The Ring." I do not recommend.

Although Hardy is primarily a storyteller, this novel raises questions about society, religion, morals, and the contrast between a good life and its rewards. It pits cosmic forces against main character Tess in her struggle for a life worth living.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough book, but geared for the UK.......2003-01-08

What wasn't apparent to me when I ordered this book was that the information was written for the British gardener. The hardiness information ("half hardy", "fully hardy", etc.) is useful in the UK, but hardiness in some plants can vary greatly between the two continents. Having said that, the book does have a thorough list of plants and is well organized. It is useful to the American gardener for plant ideas and general inspiration, but hardiness will have to be checked independently.

A sad tale of thwarted love, interrupted dreams, and life complications, Jude the Obscure is a chronicle of poverty and puts a focused eye on social conventions. The book caused such a shock when first published that Hardy gave up fiction entirely, writing only in poetry from that time on.

I found the story a little challenging to read , however, it struck my heart so deep that I could'nt put it down . The amount of love that was expressed was unreal.A perculiar story , Thomas Hardy has used the un touched parts of his imagination to shock the reader . The story is beautiful , and disturbing .

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, the first of Thomas Hardy's 'Wessex' novels, tells the story of a small troupe of farmers and their workers in a sheep-farming community in the fictitious county of 'Wessex'.

Gabriel Oak has been a shepherd since his teenage years, as his father was before him, but he's moved up and purchased, on credit, his own farm. The work is hard, but he is confident that he will succeed, and takes pride in being his own man. Then one day, a new woman arrives in town. Bathsheeba Everdene is beautiful, headstrong, intelligent, but incurably vain; Farmer Oak falls in love with her immediately. A few months later, he proposes, and is utterly rejected. Bathsheeba moves on to care for her dying uncle, and take over his farm. Gabriel continues farming - until tragedy strikes.

He and Bathsheeba will cross paths again, this time not as lovers, but as mistress and servant. Bathsheeba's beauty, vanity and impetuousness leave a trail of carnage in her wake, and Gabriel can only watch on as lives are destroyed, farms are ruined, and his own heart is crushed repeatedly.

Hardy is famous for his fatalism, and this is displayed no more than in the character of Bathsheba Everdene. She is not an evil person, as the above summary would suggest - but her stunning beauty and fierce intelligence combine with her vanity and impulsivity to create something like a force of nature, and though she means only good she seems to be able to do nothing but wrong by those who care for her. She has no more control over her nature than she does over the weather. One of the most interesting aspects of this character is that her vices - vanity, impulsivity, which Hardy attributes to her being young and beautiful - lead to the downfall of others, but she is continuously saved from downfall by her own intelligence and inner personal strength.

REal tragedy finally does strike Bathsheba, but rather than let it destroy her as retribution for her wicked ways, she grows from it. We may not be able to escape the hardship of life, Hardy seems to be saying, but we can grow and prosper by learning from it.

This was a fantastically entertaining book. The only warning that I could give with it is that it is slow-moving. The action comes in fits and spurts, and Hardy has a penchant for elaborate descriptions of the countryside, for farmhouses, churches and festivals. They are beautifully written, but take time to digest fully. Highly recommended.

            Book Description

The story of the tempestuous romance between screen goddess Greta Garbo and society photographer Cecil Beaton--two enigmatic and iconic legends of the 30s. Best-selling author Souhami has drawn on diaries, letters, photographs, and films to show they both infused their work with the allure of androgyny--while concealing it in their private lives. A beautiful picture of two remarkable individuals and their era. "Compelling reading."--Literary Review. "...fascinating insight..."--Elle.

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK TO ADD TO MY GRETA GARBO BOOK COLLECTION & WAS SATISFIED WITH ITS REVELATIONS. I DON'T ALWAYS BELIEVE WHAT I READ FROM SECONDHAND SOURCES BUT THIS BOOK SEEMS TO BE ACCURATE IN ITS TELLING OF THE LIFE OF CECIL BEATON AS IT RELATED TO GARBO. I WAS PLEASED TO LEARN DETAILS OF GARBO'S PRIVATE LIFE AS A RECLUSE SINCE SUCH INFORMATION IS SCARCE. THE BOOK IS CERTAINLY A GREAT READ AS MR. BEATON WAS QUITE INTERESTING HIMSELF & HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE GARBO IN FIRST PERSON.
