Customer Reviews:
Honest help for Act 6.......2007-01-12
This is a great reference with a lot of useful tips. It's not afriad to point out some of Act's shortcomings. This is really useful when you're trying to do something that should be easy and obvious (like look up some sales/opportunities and then run a report based on your look-up) and you can't figure out how to do it. The ACT manual is no help because it can't be done, so of course they don't have any instructions on how to do it.
Act for Dummies is honest about what Act can and cannot do and offers great work arounds, tips and shortcuts. The author's website is also a lot of help.
No information on synchronizing.......2005-06-02
While this book does explain how to manage contacts, there is absolutely no information on the most difficult part of Act!: How to synchronize. Do not buy this book if you are looking how share databases with other users. Although there is a chapter titled, "Sharing information with others", there is no mention of how to synchronize!
Act! is a program that is as good as you want it to be:.......2004-12-30
I've used Act! 6 as long as it has been out. Prior to that, I struggled through buggy earlier versions, going back ten years or so, or however long they've been out. For my use, contact management, I've looked at other programs and have not seen any program any better than Act!, but then again, I'm used to this program. If I had to do it all over again, I would still go with Act!, but I would read this Act! for Dummies book from cover to cover. For the first few years I only learned what I felt I had to learn. And, because of that my knowledge base was limited, which resulted in Act! having a limited value to me. I can tell you that most the people in our company that use Act! don't use it like they should. They don't recognize the program's power to make them more efficient and organized. Most people will continue to use their old methods of organization, i.e., hand written Day Timer methods, etc., will never actually use the appointment scheduling features, and then tell people that Act! simply isn't helping them much. Little do they know that Act! is the most powerful organizational program that they can buy, from my view, and all they need to do is learn it and use it. It took me time, but now I have six sales people under me, who travel. They all synchronize daily, so that I can schedule things for them to do, or they can flag notes for me to read, and we're always on top of our priorities. They can be in a motel in Lansing Michigan, and me in my office in Reno, Nevada, and we're all over our responsibilities as if we're in the same office. If something important slips through the crack, it's because someone isn't using their Act! program, or they aren't using it correctly. This program is like an incredibly powerful tool if put into the hands of someone who wants to succeed, while if put in the wrong hands it will not be used, it will be useless. The learning curve can take a very long time, as it did with me, simply because I didn't want to learn any more than I had to learn, to deal with my immediate needs. The power in this program can not be unleashed unless you do more than what I did, and take the time to learn it, and make sure you work it. Some of my sales people don't even open the program in the morning for hours. How can this program help these people? But, little by little, as they see how great this program can be, they are coming around. I recommend contacting an Act! consultant, and pay them a kings ransom if necessary, but learn this program faster than your competition can, simply by reading this book from cover to cover TWICE if you have to. And, every time you need to learn more, don't put it off, learn it now. Time is too valuable not to put this program to work for you. You can manager yourself, a crew of people, while also managing a powerful mass mail (or email) marketing program with this program if you are smart enough to learn this program as fast as you can. There is simply no other program with this kind of power that I've ever seen. I'm sold on this program again and again, as I find ways to take advantage of its horsepower. Managing a database of contacts couldn't be done at this level without Act! But, I don't give it five stars yet, until Act! decides to put on more traveling seminars, so I can send our sales people to them in our own town at least once a year. Act!, get working on that, will you? Then again, don't let my competition learn to use Act! In that respect, it's a secret weapon.
CUT TO THE CHASE AND BUY THIS BOOK.......2004-02-26
ACT6! for Dummies is not only extremely informative, it is fun and easy to read. It is a great starting place to learn the many aspects of the program and it is a great reference once you are using the program regularly. If you can figure out how to use this program to its fullest by using the book supplied by ACT, you are probably not in sales, you have a lot of extra time on your hands, and you love to watch paint dry. Unless you are selling real estate in South Florida and one of my competitors, buy ACT6! for Dummies and get yourself on track fast.
Take me by the hand and show me everything.......2004-02-22
I'm not a computer buff so I bought this book and was gratefully taken through an overview of the basics of Act! 6 and then the details. It not only showed how to use Act! 6, but also how to maximize the use of Act! 6.
The important thing about the book is that it is written for the reader (not in tech-speak), with a wonderful sense of humor. In fact, it's as if the author is right there with you as you go through and learn/use the program. After having used Act! 6 for a while, if I have more sophisticated needs, I look them up in the book and have the answer quickly and painlessly.
I hesitated buying Act! 6 for a while, but once I bought the program, I also bought this book. Now I am a confident and effective user.

The latest release of Microsoft Outlook 2000, Microsoft's tool for managing time, tasks, contacts, and resources at a personal level, runs more smoothly and has more features than any of its predecessors. Microsoft Outlook 2000 for Dummies shows you--without wasting time--how to use this powerful program.
Author Bill Dyszell dedicates much of this book to electronic mail. Though readers get a thorough overview of how to configure Outlook to retrieve e-mail from a mail server on the Internet, the author (perhaps unfairly) assumes that users on a local area network (LAN) have access to an organizational guru to configure their mail for them. Once you get connected, you can count on this book to explain how to filter, sort, store, track, and otherwise use Outlook to get the most out of e-mail. You'll also find explanations of related features, like the Contact List and Tasks List.
Dyszel pays a fair amount of attention to the ways in which you can customize Outlook. That's important, because customization can significantly improve Outlook's usefulness and it's one of the program's least intuitive capabilities.
Microsoft Outlook 2000 for Dummies also shows you how to fix up the button bar to your liking, as well as how to add and delete columns in tables and modify sort sequences. The book also shows how to add custom fields to Outlook's forms. --David Wall

Customer Reviews:
Good for a real Dummy.......2003-07-31
I bought this book for a client who uses Outlook for email. I've ready quite a bit of it myself and so far, everything we've needed to figure out has been covered in the book.
I don't personally use Outlook, however (I use Eudora). I did find it a little lacking in "security" issues, but it is a "beginner's" book, after all.
Outlook is complicated, this book is simple and worth it.......2001-10-09
Outlook is a great, albeit complex, program. It is impossible for a book (especially a Dummies book) to be an authoritative text on the program. But Outlook for Dummies goes a long way to giving a user or even an administrator of a mid-sized operation essential information to get started and use Outlook effectively. For advanced features, I depended on MS Press Book "Running Outlook 2000". Dummies has a wide breadth of information which is simple, readable and applicable to practical use of MS Outlook in an office environment.
email defectives.......2001-06-28
This is by far the best step-by-step reference book for those of us who are not College trained computer nerds. Mr. Dyszel presents the material in understandable terms.
offices underrated piece of the puzzle.......1999-12-15
If you are anything like me you have been using excell and word everyday for years never really delving into Outlook because it looked silly and confusing well i started using outlook 98 and it is AWESOME it does so much more than email I keep my entire company focused and task oriented using outlook. Get this great book and start using outlook today you will be suprized how much is there for you to use.
basic information, nothing very deep.......1999-06-28
I bought this book after using Outlook98 for approximately one week. During that week, I was self tought, and purchased the book because I was looking for something that could give me more than I could teach myself. What I found was disappointing. The book is essentially a walk through of the simple features of Outlook. It provides a basic overview, but lacks the depth in any one subject that I hoped to find.

Insightful into first the culture of the bible........1998-10-19
Bruce Malina did a great job giving an insight into the culture of the bible. He gives the reader examples of things and how they would be handled if they were to take place in the times of the bible. A must read for biblical culture enthusiasts.

Outlook 2000 for dummies.......2000-12-12
This has been a very helpful book. I find the dummy books easy to follow and usually can find what I need. I have just gotten heavy into using the outlook and the book has made it easy, almost comfortable. Excellant book.

ACT! 2000 for Windows for Dummies realizes that most people don't want to spend their days running ACT!--they just want to know that Ruth Ann Krinklemeyer needs a follow-up call (at this number right here) on the 23rd. Because of this, the book jumps right to the simplest ways of getting contact information into an ACT! database and then getting it back out on demand. Later chapters deal with advanced database queries and Internet integration, but author Jeffrey J. Mayer has organized the first part of this book with the knowledge that most readers will spend a lot of time there.
ACT! 2000 for Windows for Dummies employs the vintage Dummies writing and organizational style, complete with explicit how-to procedures and more than a few dopey jokes. You probably know from other books whether you like the approach. Generally, it works well as straight documentation of the program's features (especially the relatively basic ones) and holds up reasonably well when you want to do something that falls outside the realm of the normal. This book gives you the grounding you need to get practically all ACT! 2000 jobs done. Ms. Krinklemeyer will get her call. --David Wall
Topics covered: Entering contacts; extracting information; defining custom fields; using list views; performing advanced queries; using the calendar and task list features; and using ACT! as an e-mail, fax, and letter-writing platform.

ACT! 2000 a must for every user........2001-12-10
ACT! 2000 the software is an excellent product and I use it 2 or three times a day. ACT! 2000 for Dummies is extremely helpful and very entertaining. I learned alot from ACT! for Dummies. The first version of ACT! for Dummies was well written and ACT! 2000 for Dummies is even better. I bought it three or four years ago when I upgraded my software to ACT! 2000 and I still keep it handy and refer to it for all my ACT questions and how too's. I have also told everyone who uses ACT! 2000 to buy their own copy and keep it close by. TG
ACT! 2000 For Windows For Dummies vs. Act! 2000 User's Guide.......2000-12-15
I found this manual no more helpful than the User's Guide provided with ACT! 2000. In my opinion, this "Dummies" book is written on the same level as the User's Guide, and really does not speak to the "dummy" or new user any more clearly or understandably than the ACT! 2000 User's Guide does. In fact, I found Mr. Mayer's book confusing at times and would turn to the User's Guide for clarification. I wish I had read some of the Amazon reviews before purchasing Mr. Mayer's book. Had I known what I know now, I would not have purchased ACT! 2000 For Windows For Dummies but would have saved myself time, study, and money by simply using the ACT! 2000 User's Guide.
Good for beginners.......2000-05-16
This book covers a large amount of information very quickly. As a more advanced user of ACT!, I found most of the topics too superficial. However, my users frequently find the book very helpful in assisting them with basic tasks in ACT!. I found the constant references to the author's classes and other books somewhat annoying after the first several.
An abberation in the Dummies series.......2000-05-11
I have great affection for the unfortunately-titled Dummies series. Typically they combine a very digestible series of easily read lessons, which teach rather more than the title suggests. And if I find the writing style cloying, with the mandatory joke per page, I at least give them credit for trying to ease the worried reader's misgivings.
ACT is notorious in clerical office worker circles as being a daunting bear to learn really well. The instruction manuals make one think that one could spend the same amount of time learning C++ or rocket science. Typically that's when someone like me turns to a Dummies book.
I cannot fault the book for the very complete information it provides. It does it as well, or better, than any other complete manual I've seen. What disappoints is the fact that the information here makes the subject no less daunting than any of the other complete manuals.
It becomes almost sad when the reader realizes by the middle of the second chapter, that the writer is uniquely colorless and lacking any inate sense of humor -- and his attempts at it strike one as pathetic. The easy digestibility one expects from a Dummies book is completely absent. I still felt like I'd make a better living if I spent the time learning rocket science. The Dummies books on Excel, or A+ Certification -- not lightweight subjects -- make ACT appear like the height of esoteric knowledge by comparison.
This is a very fine manual, and I learned alot from it. ...
ACT!2000 Training.......2000-05-08
ACT!2000 for Windows for Dummies was the basis of lesson plans I developed for beginning, intermediate, and advanced ACT!2000 classes. Jeff has a knack for uncomplicating a feature-rich piece of software. He literally hand carries users through the program and enables them to take advantage of the best Personal Information Manager on the market.
(Phil Ardussi is a consultant in NT4.0 installations and has been an enthusiastic ACT! user for over five years.)

The best book I ever read.......2007-02-13
My book, Time Windows, by Kathryn Reiss was mysterious and full of suspense. It was so great it kept me up for hours after my bed time. The main character, Miranda, moved to an old house in the middle of nowhere from New York City. At first she doesn't like the house. Then she entered the attic and found a dollhouse that can reveal a secret about her house's past. This book made you feel like you were sitting in the attic with Miranda peering into the windows of the doll house. By Nicole
THIS IS A GOOD BOOK!!!!.......2006-10-04
I AM ONLY ON PAGE 100 AND ALREADY I LOVE THIS BOOK. I LOVED IT FROM THE FIRST WORD THE END IS EXCITING! [I ALWAYS SPOIL IT BY READING THE END FIRST BUT I WILL NOT TELL YOU ABOUT IT!] I AM 25 AND THE GIRL IN THE BOOK IS THIRTEEN SO I COULD TELL THIS IS FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE BUT I STILL LIKE IT COME AND READ THIS BOOK... IT TAKES YOU FOR A RIDE AND A RIDE OF MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE IT IS SO IF YOU LIKE MYSTERYS AS WELL AS SUPER NATURAL STUFF LIKE I DO COME READ THIS! I JUST WANTED THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK TO KNOW THAT SHE DID AN AWESOME JOB!!
A great book.......2006-09-17
I was fourteen when I read this book. I am now 22, and the impression that this book left with me is still fresh. I would not advise someone under the age of tweleve to read this book. It's a seamlessly weaved tale where the heroine, Miranada, is well prepared by the recent events in her life to take on this mystery. Even so, it is an intense mystery. Although it is a "children's" book, Dorthy's murder is awful. It is necessary to explain why her character is not at rest, but it leaves a haunting impression with the reader long after the book is over.
Hard to Believe This is a Young Adult Novel!.......2006-07-26
I happen to like all sorts of books--children's books, young adults, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, even the classics! A well-written book appeals to all ages. Look at the HARRY POTTER phenomena...................I for one admit to being passionate about those fabulous books and I am far removed from a young adult (middle aged if you must know).
When I was a school counselor not too long ago, I always went to the library's annual scholastic book sale. I usually bought five to ten books--everytime thinking that when I retired, I'd have more time to read (I buy a ton of books from Amazon too). Subsequently, I have hundreds and hundreds of books in my house, many unread (as I'm constantly buying more). I happened upon TIME WINDOWS the other day, picked it up to read the first few pages. I wanted to see if I would like it. WOW! This is an undeniably well-written novel by Kathryn Reiss. Full of fantasy, time travel, history, even a death, TIME WINDOWS has all the ingredients for a compelling and enjoyable read.
This is the story of thirteen year-old Miranda, who along with her Physician mother Helen and her father Phillip, (who is taking a break from university teaching) decide to pull up their roots in New York City for the small town life in the pre-Revolutionary war town of Garnet. They move into a large and majestic home that is very run down. Miranda is drawn to the attic where she finds a large dollhouse that is an exact replica of the Browne's new home. A slave who was hiding in this 'Galworthy' house during the civil war built the dollhouse. Amazing things happen to Miranda when she peers through the windows--she visits two families--one in 1904 and the other in the 1940's. She is a witness to all their comings and goings and conversations. She can even smell bread baking in the oven or the perfume that the lady of the house is wearing. Horrible things start happening to these families and eventually the same horrors plague the Browne family. Exact sentences are repeated throughout the century. There is a great mystery here and Miranda, along with her new friend Dan must solve it before the house destroys her family as it has in previous generations.
This novel is recommended for any age--young or old. If you are looking for a quick and easy read with a fabulous story that has a mystery and fantasy, get this book!
My Book Review of Time Windows.......2006-01-24
My Book Review of Time Windows
"The windows seemed to wink blank at me," or though she thought. This quote is from the book Time Windows written by: Kathryn Reiss. This book is all about believing in yourself even if it seems you can't take any other step. It's about a girl named Miranda trying to change the past to change the future. This is all done by an antique doll house she found in the attic of her new house. I think anyone could enjoy this novel, and I recommend it because it is a adventurous book that makes you feel like you can do anything.
The themes for the book are: shooting for the stars, courage, strength, hope, and friendship. These themes shine through when Miranda goes back in time to change the future, and when she doesn't stop even though it seems her journey is impossible. The theme of friendship is shown when sparks are shooting between Miranda and Dan. Or when Miranda goes behind her parents back, they are nothing but forgiving. There are many more examples but you'll just have to find out for yourself.
Miranda, Dan, Dorothy, Timothy, and Jeff are all characters that you will get to know, but the question is will they all get there happily ever after? Let's start with Miranda, Miranda can be hard to get to know but once you do, you don't want to leave her side. Dan is very different from Miranda. He is very "in the moment" and he tells how it is, however he still has a sense of humor. Dorothy is a character that is from the past that is abused, and later has a tragic ending. Then there is Timothy and Jeff and both of them are from the past, and they both have a ending that will make you hold you breathe. All these character work together to try to get the happily ever after they all want.
In addition to the characters and the theme the setting of Time Windows is equally important. The setting mostly takes place in Miranda's house in Garnet, Massachusetts. Miranda's house was very old with a sense of mystery to it. Miranda sneaks around her new house looking in rooms and ends up finding their old, secret- holding attic. Her attic was full of cobwebs and musty stuffy air. In this book you will find many secret-holding settings.
Overall I would recommend this book, because it is an adventurous book that will make you feel like you can do anything. Many people would enjoy the unusual incidents that happen in this book. Also the settings are amazing because she describes them so well. The characters seem so real you wish you could help them and the suspense rises at the end because no one really knows what's going to happen. This is a fantastic novel that will make you stand on your toes.
