Book Description

In White Like Me, Tim Wise offers a highly personal examination of the ways in which racial privilege shapes the lives of most white Americans, overtly racist or not, to the detriment of people of color, themselves, and society. The book shows the breadth and depth of the phenomenon within institutions such as education, employment, housing, criminal justice, and healthcare. By critically assessing the magnitude of racial privilege and its enormous costs, Wise provides a rich memoir that will inspire activists, educators, or anyone interested in understanding the way that race continues to shape the experiences of people in the U.S. Using stories instead of stale statistics, Wise weaves a narrative that is at once readable and scholarly, analytical and accessible.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible book!.......2007-06-27

One of the most honest and profound books I have ever read on white privilege. Tim Wise does an incredible job explaining why white privilege needs to be dealt with if racism is going to continue to be dismantled and resisted. Definitely a must read!!!!! :)

5 out of 5 stars Be Careful..........2007-06-15

Although I agree with the vast majority of the posts regarding the quality and insight of Wise's White Like Me, I think that, as a community of readers, teachers, activists and concerned citizens who loathe racial injustice, we must take care not to exalt Wise as THE authority on race and privilege in this country (basing this on another post that used similar language). Many African American scholars and writers - W.E.B. DuBoise, David Walker, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Sonia Sanchez, Gwendolyn Brooks and Amiri Baraka - have been saying the same thing (from the black perspective) that Wise does in his book, and decades BEFORE Wise did. While I applaud Wise's courage, I think that we shouldn't fall into another white privilege trap, which is to exalt a white person for a revolutionary work on race, when this same type of revolutionary writing was done by people without privilege years ago. I would hate to think that we can only accept admissions of white privilege from whites, when people of color - who have suffered from it - took risks and challenged racism when the topic was far from vogue (dangerous, actually). There are many great thinkers and writers of color out there; read Wise, but supplement your knowledge from those who are survivors, too. Peace to my fellow activists of EVERY hue.

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Will Open Your Mind.......2007-03-30

Tim Wise came to speak my school in the last month and what he said made a lot of sense to me. My school is largely white and he discussed to us, in his 30 minute speech, how white privilege has blinded us from the true problem.

At first I thought he didn't seem to have a point, so I went to his book to see what he actually meant. What I learned from his book "White Like Me" is that there is such a thing and that is something that has really opened my eyes to the world around me.

Tim Wise writes in his book about the way that being white has benefitted all white people, even in the most subtle ways. He argues that many of the advantages that we enjoy are because of our skin color and we should be aware of that. He also discusses that racism is a system that is in effect in our lives, a thing that we are surrounded by constantly. It is something that is futile to fight, but a system that we should always be aware of and do everything in our power to work within the system.

His book is well written and is filled with interesting anecdotes that support his theories. I found his book very interesting and I think is an important read for any white person in America. It makes the world that we live in just a little clearer and allow us to see the racism that is around us every day. Wise gives the reader the tools to fight the system and the knowledge to work with it.

2 out of 5 stars Important topic...but thats about it..........2007-02-22

I have several problems with Mr. Wise's book. First, this idea of whiteness as a privilege is your basic post-modern de-contructionism that has been thrown at every basic conception to "turn it on its head." Its no more true than saying that blackness is an underpriviledge. I'm not goint to just adopt someone else's construction because they want me to. And I refuse to go around saying "wow I'm so privildeged to be a white male." Its all a matter of perspective. From my perspective, Bill Gates is prviledged because he is a billionaire. I'm not goint to say that I am priviledged, because from my perspective, I'm not. Now from a black perspective I'm sure I would be seen as priviledged. But I'm not black so I don't see it that way.

Second, everyone has biases and everyone prejudges. It is 100% human nature. It will always be so. Even black folks have prejudices. And in a country like ours that is race-obsesses, even blacks have prejudgements about whites. I would expect nothing less. We pre-judge as part of survival mechanisms that are always scanning for what is a threat and a danger. And let me tell you, where I live (in a large urban center), a young black male with ghetto-esque or hip-hop or whatever clothing styles and jeweley and gold teeth is more likely to be a threat. Is that always true? Of course not, but statistically, its a prejudgement that is protective of my safety. I'm not goint to judge myself for that because that is natural and almost automatic. However, if I then get to know this teenager and find-out that he's actually a really great kid and is not a gang-banger and I still fear him or have some ill-will for him because of his race, than that is straght-up racism. That is a belief about someone that defies empriical observation. We all use shortcuts to make snap judgements and assessments that are changeable once new information comes in. If we continue to hold onto those judgements in the face of new information, than we clearly have a strongly held bias or belief and that is a problem.

Third, I didn't kill anyone. I didnt' lynch anyone. I'm not bad-mouthing any minorities or refusing to hire people because they are black or anything like that. I don't care. I'm just going about my business and my daily life dealing with my own stuff. Why should I feel badly, guilty or responsible for stuff thats got nothing to do with me?

5 out of 5 stars The Truth is out there....thanks to Tim Wise.......2007-02-04

Reading Tim's book might inspire you to make changes in your life----- even if you rarely come in contact with people of color. Mr. Wise devotes part of this amazing, chock full of ideas book, to examining the tragedies that can happen, in part, because assumptions are made that schools and neighborhoods that are white, are safe. Tim helps us see how common sense can fly out the window in these environments, and how we are willing to ignore so many red flags when the people waving those flags are white. Tim's examples from real current events illustrate this phenomenon beautifully; you might also find yourself coming up with many of your own examples once he gets you thinking.

This book is a priceless and rare perspective from a white man whose parents gave him a wonderful gift when they provided for him a childhood that did not isolate him from African Americans as he grew up. I found his upbringing in an integrated environment starting from preschool to be a fascinating contrast to mine spent in the super segregated suburbs of Chicago where I had no real life experience with African Americans, only exposure to poisonous attitudes and racial stereotypes that were transferred to me and my white friends not only through the community and the media, but also by the adults we trusted (seems like a form of child abuse really, where one's humanity is beaten to a bloody pulp). Tim's heightened awareness of his own privilege may come from knowing, on a very deep level, the difference between all the racist attitudes and stereotypes that are out there, and what he knows from rich experience to be true. Tim's insights do not seem to be exclusively based on experience however, anyone who has read his book "Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White" knows of Tim's thorough mastery of statistics, research, and governmental polices, both historical and current. Bottom line, the man knows what he is talking about and expresses himself beautifully.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?
Reflections of a Journey

Why did I write this book...?

...Because I went on an incredible, life-changing journey and I'm excited about that!

I hit a season in my life where I started asking questions again...
I went from passive to active...
I started challenging my own worldview...
I applied jumper cables to my brain...

I woke up from a long slumber and opened my eyes a little wider!

My only hope is that you'll start some kind of journey in your life!

Ask some questions...
Explore some assumptions...
Examine some long-held preconceptions about life, purpose and meaning...

In no way do I think your journey has to mirror mine...

My only hope and prayer is that you'll start an honest quest!

--Randall Niles

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-23

Wow. Just wow. This is a great read. Niles put a lot of research into this book and tells his story from an objectionable perspective, which is often hard for most people to do. It throws a lot of information at the reader (I'll reread it) without coming off as preachy or trying to beat anything into his audience. Fantastic and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible journey.......2007-03-08

This was a pleasurable read. The author presents some potentially dry material in a low key style which allows easy digestion. The amount of research this gentlemen did was quite astounding. His journey marks the trail marks making the path for all who follow much smoother and easier to travel. The author seems to have turned over every stone in his search. If anyone is interested enough in finding truth regarding the science/religion conflict, this is a must not miss publication.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for All Truth Seekers.......2005-03-27

"What Happened to Me?" is, in my opinion, the most important book of the young third millennium, A.D. Mr. Niles presents a case for the existence of God, the integrity of the Bible, and the deity of Christ Jesus in a readable, concise, compelling book.

I was most impressed by the book's "everyday" style, that moves the reader along. The author makes friends with us early and is fun, transparent and believable. As an attorney, this former atheist took on the challenge of reading 100 books - a journey which immersed him in seeking answers to the essential questions for the human mind.

I suggest that every learned leader, every homeschool library, and, especially all who would aspire to the offices of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and/or teacher have an oft-referred-to copy of this powerful book near at hand.

5 out of 5 stars Time for an Informed Decision.......2004-11-16

Randal Nile's book should start with his ending. Virtually every person, when asked to do so, would promise to participate on a jury and weigh evidence objectively and without any preconceived bias. Why should anyone do any less when deciding whether there is a God and whether Jesus is who he claimed to be? Even if you are turned off by sermons "about Jesus" this book challenges the reader on the most basic assumption - is there a God?

The scientific evidence, from DNA studies to simple mathematical probabilities, will force even the most entrenched agnostic into accepting that they, themselves, harbor their opinions solely on "faith". What becomes apparent, however, is that is takes a whole lot more faith to accept the "Big Bang" theory than it does to accept there is "intelligent design" behind life

I, like Randal Niles, was a "confirmed agnostic" who had no problem whatsoever categorizing all Christians as persons who were weak, who needed a "crutch" to get through life. It took many years to appreciate that I had formed my beliefs out of laziness - I had never really examined the issue. I found it very easy to believe God, and Jesus, was simply a man-made mythology that had been carefully refined over the years.

The book is very easy reading and not burdened with technical scientific jargon or biblical quotations. Rest assured the information is there if you want it, as Randal Niles makes excellent use of footnotes thoughout the text.

Any person who is committed to their "faith" that there is no God, or that there is no "evidence" of his existence, should read this book. The reader will find himself/herself constantly saying "that's what I thought" as they progress through the chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Asking the Right Questions.......2004-11-11

What happens when an intelligent, highly educated man, secure in his belief that the universe exists independent of any creator God, is faced with an inescapable question -one that, if answered honestly, flies in the face of everything he's thought true? What happens when that man admits he may have been wrong - and finds himself with more questions than answers?

In What Happened to Me?, Randall Niles takes his readers along on his personal journey from defiant atheism to devout faith. What would cause a successful man with an ideal Southern California lifestyle to abruptly leave his law practice, make a 180-degree turn in his thinking, and go into fulltime evangelical ministry? Because Niles saw a need to answer these questions for his friends and family, the rest of us may benefit from his fact-finding journey to evidence-based faith.

Go along for the ride as Randall Niles explores the limitations of scientific understanding when held up to the light of evidence for creation. Examine along with him solid reasons why the Bible is very likely the most reliable book ever published. If you will honestly join him in this faith walk, you may be surprised, as he was, to discover the ultimate answer, waiting for you with open arms.

Book Description

Kinky Friedman is back, and with 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out he gets it on with all manner of egos. In this collection of twisted takes on life, the Kinkster gives us funny, irreverent, and insightful looks at outsized personalities from people he's known, like Bill Clinton, George W., Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan -- not to mention Joseph Heller and Don Imus -- to people he's known in spirit, such as Moses, Jesus, Jack Ruby, and Hank Williams. With his meditations on subjects ranging from sleeping at the White House, marriage, his pets, fishing in Borneo, country music, and cigars to the tribulations of possessing talent, Kinky doesn't deny us the "flashes of brilliance and laugh-out-loud observations" (Rocky Mountain News) that are present in all his other work.

Hilarious, irreverent, and passionately twisted, 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out reads as if it were written by a slightly ill modern-day Mark Twain.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Kinkstah" in usual form in a compendium of anecdotes........2006-03-09

No narrative, quirky or not. Just "And then I wrote..." anecdotes from real life (if you can call his life "real") presented in Kinky's usual irreverent, bawdy, often hysterically funny lack of style. An unguided missile that will tickle the grossest parts of your sense of humor, Good fun.

3 out of 5 stars Whoa!.......2006-03-06

I wouldn't offer to share this with my reading buddies or even mention I own it, but the book certainly provides a unique portrayal of the life of Kinky. I laughed out loud at some of it, felt manipulated and propagandized at some of it, found myself bored at times, but I never wanted to put it down. This short book elicited a wide array of reactions on my part, but delving into the mind of a man as unpredictable as this author can't help but be well...unpredictable.

5 out of 5 stars "Style is everything in this world.".......2005-10-30

Another one by Kinky, they keep getting better all the time. Most of Kinky's previous books were mystery novels ,and they were in a class all by themselves, loaded with great characters and unmatchable conservation with one-liners that could blow you away.Although I was never particularly fond of mysteries,I found Kinky's style of writing so much fun ,he kept me hooked right to the end.He is able to prove the old adage "Getting there is half the fun".That is how I found his yarns. It is all the experiences, along the way, rather than the solution, that is great.
However,'nuff said. This book departs from the mysteries and is a book full of Kinky's thoughts, comments, opinions, descriptions, explanations on just about everything that one has to deal with ,just getting through life, one day,or nite,at a time. The one thing you can learn from Kinky is that the world is full of people, things ans systems that try to control you and take the fun out of life and it is up to nobody but yourself not to let it happen.Just remember, you never gave them control over your life, and if you bow to them,it's your problem.
This book is full of great thoughts and one-liners.Just for a taste, let me quote a few of my favorites:
"The last time everything was all right was Aug 14,1945.That was the day Japan surrendered."
"Smoking cigars is a secular way of religion.A way of life for men (and women) who are not afraid to die."
"Did guys like Yeats and Shelley, who,by the way all belonged in a mental hospital, ever get to the point?"
"Money can buy a fine dog,but only love can make it wag its tail."
"Like Napoleon,Hitler and Alexander did not get to have much fun in life."
"His outrageous brand of humor tends to sail close to the truth."
"Ruby had done what every god-fearing red-blooded American would do and he was one of our boys."
"I've known two and a half Governors and they didn't seem to be working too hard."
"Rednecks were coming out of the mobile homes, women were coming out of the kitchen and the homosexuals and Jews were coming out of the closets."
"I got so high I started to get lonley."
"A Gypsy's definition of a millionaire is not a man who has a million dollars, but a man who has spent a million dollars."

4 out of 5 stars The Kinkster Delivers.......2005-09-14

After seeing Kinky Friedman on Larry King Live, I decided to read one of his books. 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out' seemed like a good place to start. The book is a quick and easy read full of annedotes and lots of stories that only those bold enough can put into print. I enjoyed his very dry humor and wit. The chapter on Joseph Heller was particularly noteworthy since very few have been able to pin down this literary legend. If you looking for something different and are open enough to read another point of view, then I strongly recommend this book. The creativity that Kinky Friedman provides is worth the price of the book. A strong 4 stars. Now I am about to that on his latest book.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating glipses of a truly original American character.......2004-10-16

More than twenty years ago, a college professor friend introduced me to a talented country western musician with the remarkable name of Kinky Friedman. His band wore the unlikely moniker Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys. Thus began a journey through the diverse worlds of music, literature, politics, and down to earth, gut-busting humor. Friedman was not content to rest on his ability as a singer-songwriter. He has authored numerous mystery novels and now writes a monthly political column for Texas Monthly. He is truly a multi-talented man of great humor and ability, hilarious and irreverent as any of America's greatest talents.

'SCUSE ME WHILE I WHIP THIS OUT is a collection of some of Friedman's previous published pieces, as well as some never before released material. His writing covers subjects from country music to politics to life in general. Like a great Texas barbeque, there is a little something on the plate for everyone to enjoy.

In this era of fierce political partisanship, perhaps the most redeeming endorsement one can make for the man affectionately known as the "Kinkster" is the fact that he has been an invited guest at the White House of both Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Friedman writes of his first visit to Washington in "Hail to the Kinkster." After personally autographing a book for President Clinton and receiving a note that read, "I have now read all of your books --- more please --- I really need the laughs," the President and Kinky began a three-year pen-pal relationship. Finally, in 1997, Friedman was invited to a White House dinner. Sitting next to the President, Friedman offered him a Cuban cigar, telling him, "Mr. President, don't think of it as supporting their economy, think of it as burning their fields."

In 2001, fellow Texan George W. Bush invited Friedman for a return visit to the White House. The dinner is described in "The Houseguest." While Bush and Clinton share little common ground politically, apparently they do share a love of cigars. Friedman describes smoking a cigar with President Bush on the Truman Balcony. They discussed baseball and the President's visit to the World Series to throw out the first pitch, and while nervous, President Bush explained that he simply followed the advice of Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter: "Whatever you do, don't bounce the ball on the way to the plate. They don't care who you are --- they'll boo you."

There are other wonderful pieces in this collection. Friedman describes his admiration for and meeting with Joseph Heller. We learn of his musical experiences with the Texas Jewboys. Each chapter provides the reader with fascinating glimpses of a truly original American character and, in addition, loads of laughs. The only criticism of this collection of essays is that there are not enough of them. Introduce yourself to Kinky Friedman through this book and then check out his other books. He is a true piece of Americana and a great writer to boot.

We were fortunate to stay at the Round Barn Inn several years ago and enjoyed the chicken satay so much while we were there that we bought this cookbook. Once I started branching out into the other recipes in the book I realized what a wonderful collection of recipes it is. I have yet to make something that we haven't adored. From lemon blueberry pancakes to spinach salad with carmelized onions, it's all in there. The directions are straightforward and the ingredients are generally pretty common, but the results are fantastic!

What perfect items for a dinner party ~ easy and a beautiful presentation. My guests think I've been slaving in the kitchen for days! Thanks to my dear Vermont friend for sharing this little gem with me!

It is a tricky thing to adapt columns written with a particular region in mind into a book with a national audience -- a special trick, perhaps, when a kind of gardening calendar is retained to organize the text. Henry Homeyer's practical "reflections and observations" may seem most germane to gardeners in New England, but if you know enough to place his experience in your own climate, you will find plenty to interest you.

What I like best about this book are the pieces that transcend zones entirely, such as a report of his visit to White House gardens and his interview with Jamaica Kincaid. Discreet illustrations (block prints, a few black and white photos, and a few drawings) add to the text. And there is an excellent index, something which alas can no longer be taken for granted in gardening books.

Despite my misgivings about how serviceable some of these essays are beyond New England, Henry Homeyer's plain and personal prose reminded me of the great American garden writer, Henry Mitchell. I think Mitchell would not be unhappy to find this book on a shelf alongside his own.

      Book Description

Soon after his conversion Augustine prayed “O God, let me know myself; let me know you.” He was convinced that the eventual discovery of God began with a discovery of one's self. In “Let Me Know Myself . . .”, Donald Burt, O.S.A., offers reflections on what Augustine said about the nature of the “self,” obstacles standing in the way of discovery, and some of what one can learn about oneself from experience and faith. Chapters in Part One: Setting the Scene are: “The Mystery of My Self,” “The Inner and Outer Self,” “Adam's Loss of Self,” “The Old Man and New Man,” “The Cracked Self,” and “The Need for Honesty.” Chapters in Part Two: Obstacles to Self-Discovery are “Earthly Attachment,” “Concupiscence of the Flesh,” “Avarice,” “Concupiscence of the Eyes,” “Worldly Ambition,” and “The `Make-Believe' Self.” Chapters in Part Three: On the Road to Discovery are: “The Grace-Filled Self,” “The Fragile Self: Rising Smoke,” “The Imperishable Self,” “The Inner Self and the Flow of Time,” “The Beauty of the Inner Self,” “The Value of My Self,” “The Love of Self,” “Forgetting the Self,” and “Escaping Self.”
