This celebration of "the gateway to America" combines archival and new photographs with specially commissioned essays to capture the dramatic importance of this historic site. The immigrants are here, as viewed by Alfred Eisenstaedt and his contemporaries, along with excerpts from oral histories that delineate their experience. Shirley Burden, whose photographs have been exhibited internationally, contributes an essay to accompany his images of the island as he found it in decline in the mid-1950s; much of this handsome volume is devoted to a portfolio of pictures taken prior to and during the restoration engineered by the National Park Service in the 1980s.
Book Description
"When we got towards Ellis Island the boat slowed down and oh, I felt better and I was happy. When we saw Miss Liberty I can't tell you the feeling that we had. We were so happy, we started to sing. We sang Hungarian, but I'll translate it in English: 'In America life is golden. In America it's never dark. In America there's lots of money. In America the girl is happy. In America the flowers are more beautiful. In America the world is much better. In America living is golden. And that's where I'm longing to be, my dear.'" --Renee Berkoff, Hungarian, at Ellis Island in 1922
Ancestors of nearly one half of all the people living in the United States today came to America through the immigration port of Ellis Island. Like the Statue of Liberty, the faces on Mt. Rushmore, and the San Francisco Bay Bridge, Ellis Island has come to represent the expansive spirit of the nation, a symbol of its identity.
To commemorate the major restoration of this historic site, Aperture celebrates the 27 1/2-acre monument in Upper New York Bay with a book of vibrant photographs and words-- Ellis Island: Echoes from a Nation's Past. With historical and new pictures from some of the best photographers of our time-- including Lewis Hine, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Jerry Uelsmann, Larry Fink, and others-- and excerpts from oral histories, Ellis Island reverberates with the excitement and drama of the millions of immigrants who were welcomed to America through its doors. Specially commissioned essays by Norman Kotker, Shirley C. Burden, Charles Hagen, and Robert Twombly evoke the feeling of the past and attest to the island's pivotal significance in the nation's history.
Images by Lewis Hine, Augustus Sherman, and Edward Levick document the peak years of immigration. Alfred Eisenstaedt, Shirley C. Burden, and Joel Greenberg are among those who capture the years of the island's decline and abandonment. The restoration process and the lure of Ellis Island have been photographed by Sandi Fellman, Zeke Berman, Nancy Goldring, Larry Fink, Madoka, Geanna Merola, Lorie Novak, Jan Staller, Roger Mertin, Mariana Cook, Sylvia Plachy, Emmet Gowin, Klaus Schnitzer, Robert Sennhauser, Ed Grazda, Christopher Barnes, and others.
In 1984, Ellis Island was closed to allow massive reconstruction. After a six-year hiatus, this entry point to America between 1892 and 1954 reopened to the public, bringing with it a renewed interest in our rich multi-ethnic, multi-racial heritage. It is estimated that fifteen million people explore the park each year. With 45 four-color and 115 black-and-white duotone photographs.
Ellis Island accompanied a major exhibition selected and organized by Klaus Schnitzer of Montclair State College and Brian Feeney of the National Park Service.

Book Description
Frank Nappi is a school teacher on Long Island who, over the last several years, befriended aging World War II veterans in his community. As he heard their reminiscences he became absorbed in their stories of simple heroismand of trying to recapture what theyd left behind when they returned home. They are the stories of men who never asked for recognition or adulation, only a place in the free and prosperous society theyd built with their own blood, sweat and tearsmen who could never entirely leave behind the horrors of the battlefield, or explain them to their own children. Now, Nappi has synthesized those reminiscences and crafted them into a heartwarming and at times harrowing novel: Echoes from the Infantry. It is the fictionalized tale of one Long Island veteran, the misery of combat, and the powerful emotional bond that connected him to his fiance back home and that allowed him to survive the war with his soul battered but intact. It is about a father and a son, and their ultimately redemptive struggle to understand the worlds that shaped each oneone a world at war, the other a world shaped by its veterans.

I must of missed something........2007-04-15
Yes, I enjoyed the book. It was a quick read. I don't understand all the gushing reviews. I did not find the book emotionally stirring. Nor did I find the writing that compelling. If you are looking for a great book on a soldier's journey in WWII -actually a pilot- I recommend "In the Shadow of War" by Childers. If you want a truly lyrical novel of a soldiers travails during war -in this case WWI- I would recommend "A Soldier of the Great War" by Helprin.
...'Echoes From the Infantry' will leave a lasting impression upon you..........2006-10-20
James McCleary has been attempting to put the horrors of the battlefield behind him for years. Unfortunately, his sordid tries have fallen flat, and the days of battle are still ingrained in his mind, rearing their evil heads at the worst possible times. All John McCleary wants, on the other hand, is to know his father. The father who has cast him aside. Who has refused to learn more about him. Who has refused to let anyone in. Memory has left James trapped in a world of his own. A world where he is locked inside his own mind, where the only person who is permitted entry is himself. He cannot embrace his wife, nor his children, he can only sit and ponder what happened out there. Out on the battlefield all those years ago. While James is in this infirmary of a world, John is in his own place. For John is wrestling with the memories of a life with a man he calls his father. A man he is related to - flesh and blood - but who he knows nothing about, and, in return, a man who knows nothing about him. Now, the death of John's mother has begun to change things. Suddenly, the two men, father and son, are being brought together for a final exchange. As John begins searching through family heirlooms and artifacts in his parents attic, he suddenly begins finding missing pieces to the puzzle. A puzzle that will give him a glimpse into the frozen battlefields that have left his father eternally scarred mentally, and of a secret romance that kept him whole as he traveled through wartime Europe, fighting for our country.
I will admit right off the bat that I don't normally read books in this particular genre, and rarely read anything related to war - fiction or non. However, I was sucked in by Frank Nappi's ECHOES FROM THE INFANTRY from the very first paragraph. Nappi's descriptiveness is uncanny, and hard to resist, from the way that he illustrates the lasting effects of war, and how it can tear apart a family; to the flashbacks of various war scenes that can easily choke the reader up. Nappi's character development was also a shining point throughout this particular novel, as it showed the maturation of characters as realization dawned on them regarding different situations, while at the same time gave them the chance to learn more about their family's history by "digging through the past," as opposed to confronting various people to learn more about their father's heroic, yet troubled life. Whether you're a fan of war novels or not, Frank Nappi's ECHOES FROM THE INFANTRY will leave a lasting impression upon you, and have you wiping a tear from your eye once the book is complete.

touching.......2006-08-24
It's easy to overlook writing flaws when a story like this is so good. I can't knock this book in any way. It was a well thought out story with an unpredictable ending. I would tell you in advance that the story jumps back and forth from present time to WW2 quite often so be prepared. Some of the time the authors transitions weren't done that well and a few more narrative set ups would have been nice but I was never lost except in the comfort of the story. I would recommend and I personally look forward to reading his second book whenever it comes out. He has a lot of potential.
Terricic Book!.......2006-06-24
A friend recommended this author's book and after reading the story I was thrilled that she did! "Echoes from the Infantry," by talented new writer, Frank Nappi, is a story that had me so emotionally involved, I had trouble putting it down once I began I began reading it. It is a thought-provoking tale of life, love and a war that lasted far longer than the actual war. I am more than happy to recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this genre. I know you will enjoy this story as much as I did!
Brilliant Novel.......2006-06-23
This book touched me on so many levels. The writing is truly wonderful, and the construction of the plot nothing short of pure genius. It's the only way it could have worked, and worked so well. Because it is told in a series of multiple flashbacks, the reader gets to see, very gradually, all three stories that the author constructs simultaneously unfold with startling clarity.. This really pulls you in.
John McCleary, son of WWII vet James McCleary, is certainly an "Everyman" of sorts. I, myself, had issues surrounding my father, as we all do, that I just did not understand. Like John, it was only after most of his life had passed that I realized who this man really was -- and why he was that way. I empathized with his struggle. You cannot place enough value on reconciliation.
The war scenes in the book are both memorable and largely poignant. Frank Nappi creates characters who are endearing, believable and worth investing in. I found myself laughing one minute, only to be sobered shortly thereafter by yet another emotionally charged incident.
After reading the novel, I called my father -- just to talk. And to share my reading experience with him. Not many books have the power to do that for a reader. I am looking forward to Mr. Nappi's next creation.
