Book Description
Return to Thunder Road is the real-life story of moonshining as a way of life in the southern Appalachians. Readers will ride with the moonshiners as they tell their stories from corn mash to car loads of "mountain dew". This is a powerful saga of an age gone by when making whiskey grew from a small operation to pass time to a massive effort to shut down the multi-million dollar trade with a manhunt that put most moonshiners out of business, and many behind bars. Alex Gabbard tells the story of moonshining in the mountains where he grew up and how it inflenced the rural south and fledgling stock car racing, giving the sport its most colorful and enduring characters.

Return to Thunder Road.......2002-03-01
Alex Gabbard is a unique combination of wordsmith, historian and "Good 'Ol Boy" story teller. He preserves a part of our national heritage which has nearly been lost and greatly distorted. To his great credit he combines technical accuracy with moonshining lore and historical fact and still makes it a very entertaining read. I was fascinated to learn how unsophisticated "Hill Billies" cobbled up some awesome cars to run "Shine" and gave birth to stock car racing.
It's a darn good book

It takes near impossible determination and courage for a family to remain together in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal. But in the Deep South of the 1930s and '40s, Cassie Logan and her family manage not only to stay together, but to draw strength from their adversity. Mildred D. Taylor's classic trio about the Logan family has been the recipient of many distinguished awards, including the Newbery Medal (for Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry) and two Coretta Scott King Awards (for Let the Circle Be Unbroken and The Road to Memphis). Starting at age 9, Cassie begins learning about things no one should ever have to encounter: humiliation, prejudice, brutal violence, and profound injustice. At the same time, though, her family teaches Cassie and her three brothers about dignity, pride, and respect for humanity. The trilogy follows the Logan family through the Depression and into World War II, as they confront tragic loss and joyful triumphs. By the age of 17, Cassie is dreaming of college and law school, but still battling horrific racism. This is a tremendously powerful, dramatic, and beautifully written series. What's true, what's not?.......2006-08-15
The problem with a historical fiction book based on first-hand accounts is that the reader never knows what's true and what isn't. The general depiction of segregation in the Depression era South is accurate, but some specifics are questionable: for instance, Mr. Morrison's parents being from "bred stock." The author, a member of the Black Power movement, clearly had an agenda, and we can't be sure that she wasn't about to let the facts stand in the way of a good story. Thus we are reluctant to recommend the book when there are others, written as non-fiction, which don't require the reader to guess which parts are true and which are totally made up. Books like Black Boy and Black Like Me come to mind. Or I might mention the Jean Fritz books, with a section in the back carefully giving the historical basis for claims made in the text.
There are also some weaknesses in the plot. First of all, Cassie never accounts for how her grandfather, a former slave, was able to buy 200 acres on credit, nor how he was able to get credit to buy another 200 acres a few years later. Also, it's a bit hard to believe that a smart girl like Cassie could reach the age of nine without realizing what segregation was all about. It may be for the benefit of the reader to have it spelled out for her, but Cassie would have long since known.
Very Cool.......2004-05-04
I think this book was great. I read this book for my book report. I enjoyed the whole plot of it all. I enjoyed it being told from a 9-year-olds point of view. I like that Ms. Taylor didn't let everything just pop out. Like Cassie's parents just didn't tell her everything. She found out most of the stuff either by sneaking around or by asking Stacey her older brother. Some of the parts were confusing. And others were a little boring, well I shouldn't say that I guess slow going is the word. Overall I think this book was very exciting and you should buy it why you can. I promise you YOU WON'T BE SORRY!
Roll of Thunder Hear My Thoughts.......2003-03-07
I gave this book a 4. I thought it was a great book. I enjoyed reading it.The reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is beause there were some parts of the story that I got confused and didnt understand what was going on.It took me a while to understand some of the stuff they were talking about. Some parts I thought were slow and kind of boring.I would have liked it if they showed T.J. having the conversation with the Wallaces about Mrs.Logan.
The Characters in this story were very realistic. The book was very well written with detail and as I was reading it I could picture what was going on.I liked how the book was written through the eyes of a young girl whose name was Cassey.Cassey was very brave and willing to do anything for her family.I think she takes after her Uncle Hammer. This book reminds me of the book Watsons Go To Birmingham. When I was in seventh grade I read the prequil to roll of Thunder called"the Land" and now that I have read Roll of Thunder I understand better what is going on with the family.
I thought this book was excellent and it helped me understand what black families went through.I liked the overall purpose of the book and the subject of it.The Logans are trying to get all their bills payed so that their land doesn't get taken away from them.It is uniquely written because the kids dont't know what is going on and how the white families treat black people out side of their town. You can deffinately tell that the don't know what prejudice people act like to them when they take the trip to Strawberry.
Roll of thunder hear my cry.......2002-06-27
THIS IS THE GREATEST BOOK I EVER READ!!!!!! I Would recomend this to anyone with good taste it has a lot of detail and meaning I give it a 5 cause of the great storyline

Thunder Road.......2005-01-10
Combining aliens, the millenial fear that recently ran rampant, and cultic mania into a net of terror this book takes readers back to the turn of the millenium as the world waited on its ending. Livestock mutilations and satanic symbols send the residents of a small town into a battle between good and evil that may or may not have its origins on earth. Perhaps the most chilling aspect is the fact that none of the speculative horrors conjured up by the words are too unreal, much of what is written here has some basis in the newspapers.
The End is Near.......2004-09-24
While some do not know why this book was reissued at this time, it seems to be a good springboard for the next book which is based on a real Southwestern haunting.
The end of the millennium is coming and a local religious group has declared that the world with end with a scheduled eclipse. The eclipse is just a few days away and the town is getting used to seeing the Apostles around. They are also getting used to all of the UFO activity in the region. But none of that helps.
Earthquakes, serial killers, abductions, disappearances, livestock mutilations, and increased activity from the Apostles all combine in a fast-paced tale that takes us through the minds of over a dozen characters as they react to the events and discover some of their destinies.
Some things in this book go unexplained (and have a better impact for it) but most everything all ties together in the end as we see what happens when the four horsemen ride and the end of the world is here (or so they say).
At almost ten-years old this novel does show how Tamara Thorne has developed when compared to her newer books but some of her common themes were already present. So saddle up and head for the sunset and join the cast as we wait for the coming apocalypse.
Wow! Tamara's Best Yet...........2004-09-21
Up until now, my favorite has been Haunted. Thunder Road has move up on the list. With more characters, a deeper story, and a mixture of emotions, Thunder Road will keep you guessing, wondering, and worrying about the characters. I definately reccomend Thunder Road to anyone who likes Tamara Thorne or other great Horror Novelist.
Definitely her worst...........2004-09-19
I loved all of Tamara Thorne's previous novels, but I'm sorry - this one was absolutely terrible. I actually had to start scanning pages quickly because I couldn't care less about most of the characters or the storyline. UFOs, nothing even remotely scary AT ALL, many characters but only about 3 interesting ones and the rest positively boring. Tamara, this was a bad choice of a previously published work. I recently aquired 'Trickster' and 'Winter Scream' (Chris Curry and Lisa Dean) and I'm hoping they're better than this positively awful book. I'm sure the next *new* novel she writes will be better, but choosing this one among her previously published books to re-publish was a definite mistake. Perhaps she needed to buy some time....
Delightful danger in the desert.......2004-09-17
A magnificent symphony of characters and subplots that twist and tangle with each other - until they reach the impossible crescendo of theology, mythology, and murder!
Something akin to 'The Stand', Thunder Road introduces many characters with an apocalyptic undertone - but that's where the similarities end. The vast amounts of information regarding mythology, theology, and theory, and the multiple protagonists make Thunder Road move with the pace of a summer storm - a gathering of clouds, a darkening of the sky, that take cover warning in your head, and one helluva a deluge and light show. The perfect pace to bring to the reader to the climax.
The characters are intense, intricate, and interlaced with each other on so many levels that there are degrees of relationships here. Several radical character arcs made you second guess everything, and foreshadowing was done with grace. I do wish that we had seen more of our young wanna-be serial killer, but perhaps she's saving that for another novel.
The atmosphere is very 90's, when the book was originally written. You've got the feel of religious cults, UFO interest and investigations, government conspiracies, and a relaxed if not casual 'day in the life' of every level of citizen you can imagine. Expertly written to bring you into her world, Thorne's town of 'Madelyn' could easily have been the set for an Xfiles episode, complete with Mulder's belief, Scully's questions, and the smoking man's intrusions! Toss in David Koresh and Ted Bundy and you've got Thunder Road...
Because this is an older book you can see how her style of writing has evolved over the years... this one is a bit rougher around the edges but still keeps you moving along. Also because of the story being supernatural and scientific, it moves differently than a straight supernatural or horror. If this is the first Thorne you read, you'll want to read more - but if you've read the newer stuff and come back to this one, you may find yourself stumbling occasionally.
All in all, this is an excellent book - not as much horror as some would like, more like the piccolo in an orchestra.. it's there, it's wonderful, but it's not center stage. Should you buy it? Oh yeah... especially if you enjoy religious, supernatural, scientific, or action based horror.
Definitely a 4 you won't find the original, but the new version is coming out soon, get it!

Book Description
“The War and Peace of Rock and Roll.” —Bob Dylan
In 1975, as Bob Dylan emerged from eight years of seclusion, he dreamed of putting together a traveling music show that would trek across the country like a psychedelic carnival. The dream became reality, and
On the Road with Bob Dylan is the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at what happened when Dylan and the Rolling Thunder Revue took to the streets of America.
With the intimate detail of a diary, Larry “Ratso” Sloman’s mesmerizing description of the legendary tour both transports us to a celebrated period in rock history and provides us with a vivid snapshot of Dylan during this extraordinary time. This reissue of the 1978 classic resonates more than ever as it chronicles one of the most glittering rock circuses ever assembled, with a cast that includes Joan Baez, Robbie Robertson, Joni Mitchell, Allen Ginsberg, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, and a wild entourage of groupies, misfits, sinners, and saints who trailed along for the ride. Sloman candidly captures the all-night revelry and musical prowess—from the backstage antics to impromptu jams—that made the tour a nearly mystical experience.
Complete with vintage photos and a new introduction by renowned Texas musician, mystery writer, and Revue member Kinky Friedman, this is an unparalleled treat for Dylan fans old and new. Without question,
On the Road with Bob Dylan is a remarkable, revealing piece of writing and a rare up-close and personal view of Dylan on tour.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the most entertaining book about Bob Dylan.......2006-07-05
This is the one to read, as endorsed by The Man himself.
Imagine covering Dylan at a time at which he had matured but was still "livin' on the edge" (at age 35 Dylan had crested as a musician & peaked as a performing artist, with his two Rolling Thunder Tours providing the proof).
Larry Sloman did just that.
Read his book along with the "Rolling Thunder Logbook" and then grab hold of one of the circulating tapes from 1975 (or for that matter, 1976) ... any complete, good-quality audience recording will beat the heck out of the offical release of this material.
Most of us would prefer (and still patiently await) the offical release of the "holy grail" of Dylan gigs, i.e., the Montreal show of Dec. 1975.
Sloman's Whine Fest.......2006-01-05
This book should have been called, "On the Road with Larry Sloman." This has to be the WORST book ever written about Bob Dylan because it has little to do with Dylan, there is very little in the book about Dylan and is ALL about the writer (Sloman) to the degree, at some point in the middle, he starts referring to himself, annoyingly, in the third person. It is about the dislike of his presence by Dylan's people, his difficulty as being a reporter as a wannabe and is self serving. The only redeemable aspect of this book is his coffee shop conversations with Joni Mitchell at the end of the book.
If you enjoy page after page after page of incessant whining and childish, pouting by an author then by all means buy it.
Obviously Five Stars.......2005-03-10
Sloman's rant cuts to the bone and shares more than enough scraps from the feast of Dylan's mid '70's rock n' roll circus. His gonzo inspired adventure and inside/outside perspective are essential to understanding the status system of the stars on tour and the underbelly of the music industry. He writes with passion, humour, and desire. To be sure, he seems a pathetic sycophant at times, often treated like a mascot by the musicians and promoters, but his honesty and sincerity in not shying away from a less-than-flattering portrait of his situation makes one believe all the more in the truth of his tale. Anyone who feels that the book needs more Dylan and less Sloman clearly misses the point. His descriptions of Dylan as mystery man, his cogent intuitions about Rubin Carter, and his revelations about Joni Mitchell's songwriting process are bang-on. This is decidedly NOT a biography of Dylan, it is a story of one man's journey ON THE ROAD with a Bob Dylan tour. Any attempt on Sloman's part to disguise his experience behind a false veil of objectivity would render the story mute and destroy its delightful spirit. Hat's off to Ratso for a brilliant rendering of the Rolling Thunder Review.
far more depth than most rock books.......2004-01-05
i read a LOT of books on music, and though a solid Dylan fan, i wouldn't call myself a fanatic. This book really stands out in the level of detail it relates, and i would say it's as good as any writings about what it's actually like to be on a big rock tour. Sloman (also the ghostwriter of howard stern's 2 books) tape recorded 100s of hours of backstage chatter, so you do really get an accurate picture of the personalities here. Yes, its' slanted to the positive, since Ratso is certainly a superfan, but it's by no means a snow job. i'd compare it to "spanish tony" sanchez's book on the Stones insofar as you get far better insights to the players involved from this kind of account as you do a typical bio. i've read 5 or 6 other dylan bios and found this to be most enjoyable and insightful. The only reason i woudn't give it 5 stars is that you really have to be a pretty big fan of Dylan, folkies, or the rock touring world in general, because the level of depth here also means it's not for the more casual fan etc.
Love Dylan, but Not That Much.......2003-08-21
The whole thing seemed to be too much Dylan exultation for me. The concert was perfect, exactly the way it was supposed to be. Dylan was always so sage-like and untouchable. Get real! This is the story of Ratso following around a concert and he has a little more access than a fan who could follow the revue around. This seems like fiction not like "historic document" of a rock and roll tour.

Even better than the first one!.......2000-02-21
I thought White Lightning was great, but the authors had to pack a lot into it to get to Jodell's first big race by the end of the book. With all that background out of the way, in Road to Daytona they can concentrate, for the most part, on the minute details of a single race. That level of detail really gives the reader the sense that they are there, watching the story unfold in front of them, instead of just reading words on a page.
This book particularly gave me insight into the tasks the pit crew has to do. Before, on the rare occasions that I would watch a race, I would think it wasn't that big a deal, filling a car with gas as fast as they could. Novice that I was, I couldn't understand why the tires needed to be changed so often, or the pressures the pit crews work under. Now, when I watch the race, I'm almost as fascinated watching the pit crews work as I am when the cars are on the track.
Just as welcome are the subplots dealing with the personal lives of the characters. Make no mistake: this is a series about stock car racing, but I find myself just as interested in seeing what happens to Jodell Lee and Cathy as I am in finding out who wins the race.
Finally, I appreciate the way the authors work in historical information about racing without seeming overly pedantic. They make it seem like part of the story, rather than shoehorning in a history lesson.
Overall, Rolling Thunder is a really fun series, and the authors promise that it'll just keep getting better.
I enjoyed this book as much as the first one in the series........1999-04-07
I just got finished reading "Rolling Thunder - Road to Daytona", the second book in the Rolling Thunder series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It deals with 3 Tennessee racers who make it to the big time stock car racing world by running at the first Daytona race held at the Speedway.
The story kept my attention, and the history and characters, both real and fictional, held my interest.
I can't wait for #3.
