Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

5 out of 5 stars pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Book Description

At Home with Art is about art lovers, their passion for art, and their seemingly unquenchable desire to bring home the works that have captured their hearts. Whether the artworks are Picassos or posters, these people want to acquire and live with the art they love. "I wake up in the morning and exercise where I can look at it," says John Robson about one of the paintings in his San Francisco townhouse. How these art lovers integrate their finds
into their living spaces, juxtaposing their paintings and sculpture with the artifacts of everyday life -- furniture, rugs, books, lamps, objets d'art -- is vividly illustrated here in more than fifty homes inhabited by people for whom living with art is as essential as breathing.

These homes are not mini-museums with art to be admired from a respectful distance. Nor have they been designed by interior decorators whose goal is to harmonize the upholstery with the pictures. Each home has been chosen for its very personal and inspired expression of art and decor, revealing a deep, even spiritual, relationship between the pictures on the walls and the people who place them there. From airy lofts and old farmhouses to sleek city apartments and cozy traditional houses, all are made special by the paintings and sculptures within.

A wide variety of people appear in these pages, from the president of MoMA to a young man in love with poster art, to the writer who has artist friends, to the young woman who inherited pieces from her mother, to the actress whose art travels with her wherever she goes. The kinds of art that speak to them and that they are impelled to acquire range from old masters to outsider art, from folk art to contemporary art, to prints, drawings, photographs, and sculpture. We learn about what sparked their interest in a particular genre, how they make their selections, how they meld them into their homes, and what living with their art means to them.

Though looking at these interiors proves there are no fixed rules about displaying a work of art, special sections on framing, hanging, lighting, and caring for art, from oil paintings to delicate works on paper, provide technical assistance. A directory includes framers, dealers, auction houses, and restorers in major American cities and in London.

Above all, At Home with Art shows that there are all kinds of art to be loved and cherished, however grand or simple, and that living surrounded by art's beauty can bring boundless personal satisfaction.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An invitation into the homes of collectors........2000-12-31

This book is inspiring because it shows us the homes of many collectors of paintings. It is well written, but there are not enough new ideas that can be incorporated by the reader. Some of the collectors have little idea on how to display their paintings in a way that is pleasing and justifies the works. Many of the dispalys are cluttered and claustrophobic. Yet, there are some splendid homes that incorporate paintings spectacularly. The article on Dorothy and Herbert Vogel is very moving. These extra-ordinary people deserve a book just on them.

5 out of 5 stars A unique and personal view of collecting.......2000-01-12

This is an extraordinary book. Clearly not intended as a scholarly exercise, the authors take us up close and personal with outstanding collectors and their art. These are people I would be unlikely ever to meet, and their personal views and how they are expressed through the works they surround themselves with provide a glimpse into the collecting mind. Many of the homes are wealthy, though some are artists who have accumulated works from their friends. The photos are spectacular, and give many ideas of how art can be integrated into one's home.

2 out of 5 stars At Home With Art Not Your Home.......2000-01-06

Diving into this book, as an avid art collector, one might expect to learn how different people work with the art they possess. This book though is really for those who are stricly ardent and almost excessive collectors who like to jam pack their residences with works galore. What is missing from this text is a careful presentation of how many different types of people display their art. There is too much focus on furniture, collecting passions and interest, and not enough focus on ideas. Overall, I found this book to be somewhat mono-dimensional in the concepts portrayed of how others live with their art. More a picture of what the authors had preconceived than a search for the spectrum of ideas.

Book Description

The country's two leading expert advocates for salvaging parts of unwanted houses rather than demolishing them explain the "green" art of unbuilding (or deconstruction) and take the reader on a fascinating tour of the process. This is the first and only book that addresses this growing trend.Contains fascinating details on construction techniques for houses both ancient and of more contemporary vintage and methods used to determine their value or salvagability. Covers a variety of projects, from simply dismantling a wall to completely unbuilding an entire house safely, while saving the reusable parts and pieces for another building or for another purpose - including sales. It is satisfying, fun and economical to reuse old building materials both for their original purpose or for decorative purposes.

5 out of 5 stars It's not only environmentally sound, but economically profitable. .......2007-04-12

We live in an age of recycling. It's not only environmentally sound, but economically profitable. This applies just as much to reusable and salvageable building materials from structures scheduled for demolishing, as it does to ordinary newspapers and soda cans. Now U.S. Forest Products Laboratory research engineer Bob Falk has teamed up with Brad Guy (Director of Operations at The Hammer Center at the Penn State School of Architecture) to publish "Unbuilding: Salvaging the Architectural Treasures Of Unwanted Houses" an instruction guide to salvaging materials that can be reused and recycled from homes and other buildings by literally and carefully dismantling the original structures piece by piece. These materials can include ornate hardware, period lighting fixtures, windows, doors, mantels, hardwood flooring, and anything else that continues to have esthetic and commercial value. Often these are 'yesteryear' items that cannot be matched by anything available to day and have great financial worth in and of themselves. The authors draw upon their many years of expertise and experience in advising about new tools, deconstruction processes, and alternatives to conventional demolition tactics. "Unbuilding" is strongly recommended to the considered attention of building contractors, demolition experts, and environmentally conscious salvagers, as well as non-specialist general readers with an interest in recycling building materials for their value, utility and esthetics.

By now most readers even marginally interested in home decorating are familiar with the democratic principles of decorating elaborated in Rachel Ashwell's first book, Shabby Chic: namely, that well-made vintage furniture and home accessories can add a cozy grandeur to your home, even if the paint's a little thin or the fabric a bit faded. In her second book, Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic Treasure Hunting & Decorating Guide, Ashwell shares her processes, from a stall-by-stall description of a flea market trip to pictures of her design boards scattered with photos, fabric swatches, and paint chips. Ashwell doesn't skimp on details: she tells how to decide on a fair bargaining price at flea markets, how to clean old items without harming them, and (step by step) how one ugly glass-fronted cabinet topped with old linoleum and mismatched shelf paper became an attractive, roomy storage piece that houses her daughter's books, dolls, and bedding. This is a friendly, intimate book in which Ashwell shares pictures of her own home and those of her friends--some of whom live in roomy beach houses and some of whom live in 450-square-foot cottages, and all of whom use the main Shabby Chic concepts of comfort, function, and beauty in deciding which objects to share their space with. Fans of the original Shabby Chic will find this follow-up every bit as useful, attractive, and accessible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, inspiring ideas........2007-01-04

This is my favorite Shabby Chic book. It's full of beautiful pictures with the classic shabby chic look. The ideas are clean, feminine, vintage. Although it isn't shock full of written ideas, the inspiration from the pictures and captions was enough for me.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide........2006-08-12

I find this book incredibly useful for tips in buying things, old and new, for my home. The handwritings in this book are readable, and I am not a native speaker! And it is interesting to see how Ms. Ashwell's taste and eye get more and more refined over the years. I appreciate work by other great interior designers like Jacques Grange and the late David Hicks and my style is not very much shabby chic at all. But for everyday living, I find Ms. Ashwell's advice to be adaptable and elegant. This book does not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-07-31

Ms. Ashwell continues to inspire me with great collecting and decorating tips. She actually shares her sources, which is refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration for those who love vintage things.......2006-05-06

Before I even finished the book, I had to rummage out my odd selection of cream pitchers and glasses to fill with wildflowers. The photos inspire you to enjoy vintage fabrics, china and furniture in a fresh way.
It's been years since I've made the early rounds at Baltimore and Pennsylvania flea markets looking for the unique items that make a home special. Reading this book makes me take a fresh look at some things stashed in my closets. The lovely photos of rooms show uses for mismatched linens and distressed chairs.
The book branches out from just decorating by following Rachel on her flea market searches. It also includes a chapter on vintage clothing and also one on decorations (old silk flowers, etc.) for parties and packages.
Her style focuses on a palette of whites and faded pastels. She recommends some thrift measures like substituting pressed glass for crystal. Use it in abundance; for instance, put a bud vase at each place setting on the table. In general, it won't be totally inexpensive to get this look for your home.

5 out of 5 stars Not so shabby, very chic.......2006-04-01

This is the most gorgeous how-to-book out there! Mrs. Ashwell takes you along her journey, as she visits her treasure-hunting grounds for furniture and fabrics that convey a sense of history and adventure. Her style is very romantic and feminine, so this book is a find for all you girly-girls out there. Shabby Chic is presented as a life style, and she consequently adds a chapter on clothes and accessories. You will find plenty of inspiration to embrace a more eco-friendly and glamourous way of life through her tips on what to select (quality) and how to restore and clean out your "new" treasures. It has certainly made me want to re-upholster my old chairs and sew new curtains out of the faded fabrics my Granny gave me. This book will bring out your inner interior-designer and your slumbering artist. Life should be bright and fabulous. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Most Wonderful Book For St. Petersburg Visitors.......2006-07-27

I happened on this wonderful book by reading all the reviews written by one of its reviewers. It is small, light weight and so very easy to use. The pictures are beautiful. We went to St. Petersburg last December with the book in hand. Each night we decided where to go the next day. Planning is important because each museum is usually closed at least one day a week. Unfortunately the museums were so interesting, that we often stayed way longer than we planned to. We never would have gone to some of the museums had we not had this little book. We especially liked the maps showing the ocation of each museum in relation to the others. Because of this book, we will return to St. Petersburg in the off season and enjoy many more of its amazing little museums -- after all what better way is there to spend a cold December day?

4 out of 5 stars Discovering St. Petersburg's 40 Unknown Treasures.......2004-09-02

As the founder of a company devoted to business and cultural travel to Russia, it pains me that so many tourists come to St. Petersburg for a day or two and only visit the Hermitage, Peterhof, and a ballet. Russia is like a Fabergé egg-a beautiful exterior with a hard-to-open but spectacular hidden interior. Among the little known gems in St. Petersburg are the Museum of Theatrical and Musical Arts, the Nabokov Museum (former residence of Vladimir Nabokov), the Russian Ethnographic Museum, the Rimskii-Korsakov Memorial Apartment-Museum, the History of Religion Museum (formerly the "Anti-Religion Museum), the recently-opened Museum of Toys, and the Museum of Russian Vodka. All these treasures and more are fondly catalogued in Cathy Giangrande's Saint Petersburg: Museums Palaces and Historic Collections (Museums).

To appreciate this book a traveler needs to understand the unintentional irony of the chapter titled "Also well worth a visit are ..." listing the Hermitage Museum, one of the world's premier cultural treasures (and the most popular tourist site in Russia). It makes a great companion to such guides as DK Eyewitness's St. Petersburg guidebook (far more sights and coverage of the Hermitage, but without lengthy descriptions of lesser-known museums).

Its small size makes this a "laptray book", but for the visitor in body or spirit to St. Petersburg is just as enthralling as a five pound coffee table book. One-to-four pages are devoted to each of the over 40 lesser known attractions in St. Petersburg. Each listing had a clear address, directions, phone and web site (if available).

Books like this will help St. Petersburg, and Russia, become one of the world's premier tourist destinations in the next 10 years. There are literally thousands of such treasures throughout Russia as these listed here, but few people know about them. Truly, this book will help anyone interested in truly discovering Russia.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding guidebook to St. Petersburg.......2003-09-01

I began reading Cathy Giandrande's little guide to St. Petersburg with a great deal of skepticism. As I kept exploring the book, all my doubts quickly disappeared. That alone came to me as a surprise. Unlike most Russians who still suffer from a mild identity disorder, Petersburgers have a strong sense of local patriotism and know what they are and what their city is about. From time to time, their patriotism mutates into a peculiar kind of city chauvinism. It is taken for granted that no temporary visitor, be he or she from Moscow or Paris, can know the city or truly appreciate it. I am no different. As a Petersburger, I would never think that an outsider, least a foreigner, least someone from a culture many Russians perceive as hostile and extremely russophobic, would be able to put together a concise guide to the lesser known museums and landmarks of the city and do it in such a low key, friendly and unbiased manner, that the final work is a joy to read and is more useful from any practical standpoint of city exploration than many far weightier and thicker "serious" guides.
Cathy Giangrande's St. Petersburg is a guide to the city museums and lesser-known landmarks. If the author "missed" any museums, then I have a feeling, that she excluded them deliberately because they are so obscure (like the Museum of Armed Forces Medical Academy) that almost no locals are aware of their existence. On the other hand, the guidebook contains information on some really obscure museums, such as the new private museum of toys.

The book is a journey of exploration and is a pleasure to read "as is" from cover to cover. Alternately, it can be used as a helpful reference manual.

The guidebook has its own share of minor irritants, such as the occasional misspelling of French and English words transliterated backwards, but they are not very significant.

The book is beautifully printed on high quality paper and is richly illustrated with color photographs. It contains a helpful map or rather an outline plan of the central part of the city, a schematic plan of St. Petersburg region, and a well-designed plan of St.Petersburg "Metro" (or the city's subway system). All museum and landmark entries include detailed address and contact information, and indicate the nearest subway or suburban train station.

Among all foreign languages guides and books on St. Petersburg, that I ever came across, this one is the only work that is worth translating into Russian. Even locals would find this book a great aid in exploring their own city.

1 out of 5 stars Very dissapointed.......2005-05-02

I bought this book because I was interested in Pique Assiette and the only other review said it was very good. Now after buying it I see that every single project has exactly the same instructions! Basically you are reading the same text over and over again and all thats changing is the photos. Take my word, save your money and buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars A great "how-to" book, great gallery.......2003-11-05

This book does a really great job of teaching you how to create really fun projects. Simple, easy to follow instructions. The gallery section is very cool, with all kinds of great art that will spark new ideas for stuff you can create for your house and garden.

Loved it!

5 out of 5 stars An un-put-downable book!!!.......2005-12-01

WOW...Terry Krohn is a wonderful, gifted story-teller! Every chapter of Eye of the Pyramid leaves the reader thirsting for more. This is the type of book a reader would not want to put down. The characters and plots are woven in a suspense filled drama that makes you want to learn more...Move aside Dan Brown...Here is Terry Krohn. I can't wait for the next book.

5 out of 5 stars "Eye of the Pyramid"-A bedtime book for powerful dreams!.......2005-10-08

Terry Krohn's book is a wonderful story that scans from the time of Cleopatra to the modern world of high finance. Mr. Krohn has successfully taken the magic of the ancients and woven an intricate tale of suspense and adventure. From a mysterious cavern deep beneath the Giza plateau, a crystal scepter and orb are uncovered. Items from a civilization 50,000 years dead, their magic is discovered and harnessed by power brokers in the modern world, being used to manipulate the world economy. Only one man can undo the evil, a humble professor from Virginia with a unique gift: the gift of dreams. Through listening to his dreams he is able to decipher their plan, and use the magic of the ancients to save the day. A lot of short chapters make this an easy book to carry with you through the day and read as you can. Very good work, Mr. Krohn!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, intrigueing, Exciting.......2005-08-29

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. As a student of history, Krohn's writing made use of the history of the times, and wove a fascinating tale, complete with the unanswered mystery of how the coral castle was constructed by one man. I am looking forward to a sequel story.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting novel about one man's discoveries .......2005-02-06

Eye of the Pyramid is an exciting novel about one man's discoveries leading to the secrets of a 50,000 year-old race, secrets that have been jealously hoarded and corrupted by an influential cabal known as "The Society" to promote their own greed and power-mongering. The Society's legacy has been corruption through the ages, and shadowy plots from the destruction of the Roman Empire to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln to an evil modern-day scheme hinging upon an American leader. Ancient artifacts hold the key to power beyond imagination in this enthralling and adventurous tale.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Novel.......2004-11-30

Eye of the Pyramid is a suspense filled thriller loaded with plots and subplots. The action takes place in contemporary times as well as in historical periods. Paul Malone, the main character, is a scientist with unusual abilities who seems fated to take his place alongside such popular fictional characters as Clive Clussler's Dirk Pitt and Dan Brown's Robert Langdon. Arthor Krohn has cleverly used historical fact to support the premise that a secret society has manipulated the world's monetary systems throughout the ages for its personal gain. When Paul Malone enters the picture, he finds himself enmeshed in a modern day conspiracy without his knowledge. As the plot unfolds, the reader wonders who of the many characters are his enemies and who will ultimately come to his aid. The scenes involve a variety of real locales, including the U.S. Treasury Department, an opulent resort in the Swiss Alps, the pyramids of Egypt, and the mysterious Coral Castle in Homestead, Florida, all of which are well described and add spice to the book. Overall, the novel provides a fast-paced engaging story that includes a few thought provolking ideas. Definately a well written book that is destined for the best seller list in this reader's opinion.

Book Description

Frank Lloyd Wright's Rosenbaum House book tells the story of the building's design, construction--which, like so many of Wright's commissions, involved high drama punctuated by humor--remodeling, and restoration. Written with lucid wit and plentifully illustrated with photographs and drawings, it is insightful and entertaining in equal measure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Guide to a Beautiful & Instructive Usonian Home.......2007-03-14

I offer warm praise for this informative book, which is now offered to students of Frank Lloyd Wright's work. Frank Lloyd Wright's 2nd, and most beautifully preserved, Usonian House must have startled the quiet Florence, AL neighborhood in 1940 when it appeared as a finely crafted Alien on its 2-acre corner lot. Supremely private from all public views, the exterior view reveals the design's fluid openness and elegant use of red Tidewater cypress wood, red brick, concrete, and glass. The young Rosenbaum family produced several children. So Mrs. Rosenbaum requested that Mr. Wright design an expansion of the original home, to incorporate their wish for a 4th bedroom (with its own bath), additional storage, an enlarged kitchen and laundry facility, and a playroom with extra integrated dining space. The finished product screams modernity, sleekness, horizontal flow, and intimacy, as the surrounding land plot appears to melt outward and flow from the intensity of the design of the dwelling. An enclosed Japanese Garden rounds out the entire concept of a spiritual and private enclave offering a quieting style and peace. Following a multi-million dollar historical renovation, completed in 2002, the house is now open to the public by appointment, and operated by the City of Florence as the finest small FLW home in the world. Based on traditional wooden Japanese houses--built around a Tatami Mat grid--all elements of the design derive from the repeated rectangle-grid floor forms that Mr. Wright determined for the grounding of the placement of doorways, halls, windows, book shelving, and elegant built-in storage cabinets. The house features one of the 1st cantilevered carport structures ever built in the world, the daring early use of flat metal roofs, original use of glass clerestory windows up to the roof line, extensive documentary photographs of the design features, and correspondence to and from Mr. Wright's atelier as ideas for the original structure and its expansion just nine years later emerged. The result is a supremely edited whole that will induce fascination and delight.

[I have introduced several groups of interior design students to the home and grounds. All groups have loved it! I also offer great praise for the remarkably well-informed docents at the property, who serve as the most delightful and elegant tour guides. These people absolutely love this home. They are well-versed regarding the history of the home, and are great admirers of the work of Mr. Wright. The docents also have the added learning, year after year, of speaking with an admiring Public from everywhere! Wright fans from all over North America and Europe travel regularly to visit and revisit the home. Wright scholars have rightly praised the renovation, which was overseen by the book's primary author, Barbara Broach. To speak with Ms. Broach is to have Lunch with the Voice of Experience with regard to historical renovation! Her love for the place is palpable.]

This book should be welcomed by Wright fans, and students of interior design, architecture, and real estate development. But better yet, schedule a trip to the home itself. And meet the docents. Contact with this house has completely transformed the images of what the students felt was even possible in a finely crafted home environment. What you will learn from the book is how all of this Art in architectural expression came to be. And the immense work required to rejuvenate the inherent Beauty of it all. Complete with scaled floor plans and beautiful photographs. Warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars a nice addition to any library.......2007-03-10

very helpful for anyone building a model of the house (like i did) or to anyone interested in an early frank lloyd write masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Rosenbaum House.......2007-01-12

Being intimately familiar with this house-family and location-it is with great pleasure that I rate this book 5 stars. As most people familiar with FLW houses realize, the problems with construction can sometimes be many-yet can be overshadowed by the problems encountered over the years with malfunctions and upkeep of the original design. These problems can be nagging enough to become monumental! This book pulls no plugs about these situations. This is pleasantly refreshing.
A great read for students of FLW houses or architecture in general--a must visit to the actual house for anyone anywhere--especially in the
South!

1 out of 5 stars Filled with errors.......2006-12-16

This slight book is filled with outrageous factual errors and author's self-promotion. Sergeant's Usonian Houses and Pfeiffer's Select Houses are authoritative sources on the Rosenbaum House; or the National Trust's Usonia.

5 out of 5 stars Saving a Frank Lloyd Wright House.......2006-12-10

To argue that Frank Lloyd Wright's house designs were anything less than spectacular is to look at the lines of the design rather than to the details of the construction. This delightful little book describes the Rosenbaum House in Florence Alabama.

Basically the house was one of the early Usonian homes that interested Wright a great deal in the years just before and after World War II. These were homes designed with spectacular design features but were small homes intended for the average family.

The Rosenbaum house was 1,540 square feet. It is a spectacular design, as you would expect. But built at what was then pushing the state of the art, the construction details were not quite up to the design aspects. The dead flat roof wasn't strong enough to remain flat, as it sagged it created catch basins that held water that the roofing material was not designed to keep out. Termites had their way with some of the wood. The heating system had never worked properly, and on and on. The building was condemned with the building inspector recommending that it be torn down.

The City of Florence bought the house, originally constructed with a target price of $7,500 and an actual construction cost of $14,000 for $75,000 and then spent $540,00 rebuilding it. The result is as spectacular as it was in 1940. It is a work of art.

Book Description

Treasure Chests traces the fascinating evolution of the boxes that have held the things that people valued most over the centuries. For thousands of years, chests have gone to war, to sea, journeyed with us across entire continents, and held and protected the possessions we hold most dear in our very own homes. From tool chests to toy chests, this book celebrates how extraordinary a box can be when it is meant to hold something we treasure. More than 100 chests from museums and private collections are featured, including over 250 color photographs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great job!.......2007-05-29

I ordered this book from Russia. Relying on the lack of such books in our country, it is really valuable material. I'm glad i have it now and strongly advise you to purchase one. Best wishes!

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous.......2006-08-08

I really enjoy this book. I am a woodworker / furniture maker and I read a lot of this style of book. The author does a fantastic job of illustrating each box and providing a bit of background on each box. The photos are all in color and very well composed.

The boxes range from a tea box recovered from the harbor at the Boston Tea Party to HO Studley's over-the-top tool chest to a standard GI foot locker.

The book is well-organized. There is little wood working technique described so if you are looking for a how-to book, this ain't the book for you. However, the author briefly describes uncommon techniques such as lapstrake construction (common in shipbuilding but almost unheard of in furniture making).

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and wide-ranging.......2004-04-19

A lovely book. The title may mislead - it's really what I would think of as large-scale boxes, carcass work. Old and new designs, from blanket chests to campaign chests. Usually enough photos of each piece to give a real sense of it, too. (I hate feeling like I've missed seeing 2/3 of what's there.)

5 out of 5 stars Both a beautiful and an educational book.......2002-10-06

This book is truly enjoyable to read.

It is a beautiful "coffee table" book -- after all, who isn't intrigued by antique treasure chests and other historical boxes.

I really enjoyed the history behind the various boxes types, and learned a lot about the benefits of the different construction types.
